To think this is cruel from the parents? Child's name

BePoliteOpalQuail · 08/04/2025 07:45

Recently been teaching in secondary schools and met a kid with the exact same name as a very well-known and and iconic male celebrity, along the lines of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Zac Efron.

I imagine the kid gets a lot of stick. A little divided by it, it's cool but the kid will forever be getting comments on it and I just don't think it's fair on them.

Over many years as a teacher I have taught William Wallace, James Bond and Sinead O'Connor. The kids were too young to know but I often thought 'why?'

GreenTurtles3 · 12/04/2025 19:24

I've just remembered a Rhianna too

Apreslapluielesoleil · 12/04/2025 19:27

I once knew a Cooper family back in the 70s whose sons were called Tommy and Henry.

Of course it's the full name. There are many Zacs and Harrys out there, but they also had the same surname, Efron, Styles.

That's a bit cheeky, it wasn't clear from your original post so please don't be so snappy with people.

I used to work with a George Michael…. and his brother was called Michael?!?

Were they Greek or Greek Cypriot? There’s usually one Michael Michael in each school year.

Yes, unfair because a) let the kid have his own identity for Gawd's sake! and b) what if said celeb turns out to be a Russell Brand or a Jimmy Saville? 😒

I knew a Greek Cypriot Michael Michael. I didn’t realise it was a thing.

Where I grew up there was someone who had the same name as a notorious murderer. He was absolutely mortified when he found out. (He wasn't named after him, it was pure coincidence.)

HelenaWaiting · 13/04/2025 23:27

In 2015 my gall bladder was removed by George Michael. (By a doctor called George Michael, I should say; the late singer didn't just come up to me with a scalpel).

Phoenixfire1988 · 14/04/2025 09:01

My cousin has one of these names as far as I'm aware no-one has ever mentioned it 🤷‍♀️ he's in his 20s now

Kitsmummy · 14/04/2025 11:36

I went to school with a Michael Jackson. There was an "Ow" every time the register was called 🤣

I share a name with a famous person, but I'm 20 years older than them. So it can happen regardless of what parents do.

Absolutely. I know a Michael Jackson, too. Born a couple of years before the musician.

BePoliteOpalQuail · 14/04/2025 13:59

I've known a Jackson Michaels before!

I’ve got a son with a famous(ish) namesake. Put it this way, when a certain musical came out, he got serenaded with a few ABBA songs.

I knew a Gordon Bennett once. Had stick for it his whole life!

My ex’s dad was a Gordon Bennett. He dropped the Gordon and went by his middle name, but my ex told pretty much everyone he ever met what his dad was really called, so he couldn’t hide it.

I know of a woman who called her dd Tia Maria and yes, she was deliberately named after the drink..

My dad taught a Tia Maria. She was a twin, the twin was something like Kathleen, but was known as Vodka in the staff room.
