To think this is cruel from the parents? Child's name

Recently been teaching in secondary schools and met a kid with the exact same name as a very well-known and and iconic male celebrity, along the lines of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Zac Efron.

I imagine the kid gets a lot of stick. A little divided by it, it's cool but the kid will forever be getting comments on it and I just don't think it's fair on them.

Non-issue.

I know a couple of people who have the same name as extremely, globally recognised fictional characters. They had normal names before those characters became famous. I do feel sorry for them.

If parents knowingly give a child a name associated with a celebrity, I am both mystified and sympathetic. But I guess some think it’s cool or have other reasons.

One couple I vaguely know accidentally did this. They names their child after a famous poet (there aren’t many of those so this person really is well known) and didn’t even realise. Poor kid gonna spend his whole life intruding himself and having people go ‘Oh, like the poet?’

What was it?

Donald Duck? Michael Mouse?

In the days before I installed a call blocker, I used to tell data collection callers that my name was ‘Donald Canard.’

Only once did someone to whom they’d sold the list call me back to ask for Mr Canard. I said hold on while I get him, did a quick YouTube search, said I’m putting you through now then played him the sound of ducks quacking.

He didn’t call back.

Those potential customer lists are expensive. It’s always fun to subvert them.

I share the same name of a famous person (first and last). Most people don’t notice but some people comment on it, I just smile and nod.

The correct response is, “Who?” “Never heard of her.”

Queenanne20 · 08/04/2025 11:16

I adopted my ds aged 4. His uncommon first name, added to my surname, is the same full name as a very famous celebrity. At age 4 I could hardly change his first name (and I wouldn't have wanted to anyway, it belonged to him) and he was occasionally "teased" about it at school and I've actually been asked by other parents was he specifically named after this person and are we related to him etc. He's now in his twenties and his name is commented upon occasionally, usually when meeting people for the first time (most recently at a job interview) to which he merely replies with a perfected half smile, as if to say "do you really think I've never heard that one before".

treesandsun · 08/04/2025 11:21

I also knew a James Bond - he had heard every joke going. He said there had only been one film made when he was born - his parents didn't deliberately set him up for a life time of jokes. I also know a Peter Cook. I knew a woman whose name was Emma and she married a man with the surname Dale to become Emma Dale.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 08/04/2025 11:26

I know a bloke called Cameron Deas, which is pronounced "dee-ass".

There's such a weary look about him when he's asked his name.

Gonners · 08/04/2025 11:37

When you name a baby, you have absolutely no idea if, by the time she is 5, 10 or whatever, someone with the same name will have become famous (or infamous). So it's all nonsense. I don't suppose anyone ever expected General Mike Jackson to moonwalk.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 08/04/2025 11:39

I mean my name is the same as a former queen 😆 those are fairly common names tbh.

EilishMcCandlish · 08/04/2025 11:46

Unless it is Elon Musk, he should be ok.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/04/2025 11:49

HuffleMyPuffle · 08/04/2025 12:07

My mother also went to school with a Richard Head

PuppyMonkey · 08/04/2025 12:17

My uncle was called James Joyce and he was an English teacher. He loved it!

Wayne Eyre is genius.Grin

FeedMeSantiago · 08/04/2025 12:20

I know a Harry Potter, he would have been born about a year or two before the first book was published. Unfortunate, but can't be helped.

Depends on the celebrity, if child was born before or after they were famous, what the celebrity is famous for (actor or singer is one thing, famous porn star, quite another) and how common the names are.

For example I know a James Brown. It doesn't register with the late singer as much a child named Taylor Swift or Dua Lipa would.

Auburngal · 08/04/2025 13:15

My ex BIL was James Brown. My parents’ neighbour is Michael Jackson.

PissOffJeffrey · 08/04/2025 13:30

Agreed it depends on what the name is. If it’s a common first name & a common surname it’s fine. Jack Black or Ryan Reynolds for example.

If it’s Jay-Z or Eminem then less OK.

SingingSands · 08/04/2025 13:35

My kids went to school with a Luke Perry. I was really excited to hear that, I was a big LP fan in the 90s 😀

TeaIsNice · 08/04/2025 13:44

I know someone called John Thomas. I kid you not. Rathet be called Leonardo

chakrakkhan · 08/04/2025 13:59

I went to school with a William Smith. Absolutely did him no harm at all.

YourBestFriend · 08/04/2025 14:07

I know two brothers called Tom and Jerry, so there you go.

whycantibeselfishforonce · 08/04/2025 14:13

I once taught a boy who had the surname King. His parents named him Joe. Now that is cruel!

I can top that. I met a John Thomas Allcock.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/04/2025 14:49

I went to school with a Ronnie Rennie. I've always wondered why his parents couldn't have chosen any other first name at al.

My married name /first name combo is the stage name of a very famous-at-the-time male rock star. People over about 35 still find this hilarious.

caringcarer · 08/04/2025 14:50

WaltzingWaters · 08/04/2025 07:51

I knew a James Bond when I was at secondary school. He loved it (at the time).

I also had a college teacher whose married name was Tina Turner. She hated it. (Especially when everyone would tell her she was simply the best).

Think it very much depends on the celebrity and the persons personality. But I do think it’s a bit odd to knowingly give them an exact name of a celeb. It’s a lot to live up to and comes with a lot of comments.

Edited

🤣🤣🤣

Kissedbyfire1 · 08/04/2025 14:52

I have the same name as a person who died in a high profile scandal situation, years after I was born. I still get asked if I am named after her, which is…odd.
