Recently been teaching in secondary schools and met a kid with the exact same name as a very well-known and and iconic male celebrity, along the lines of Brad Pitt, Harry Styles, Zac Efron.

I imagine the kid gets a lot of stick. A little divided by it, it's cool but the kid will forever be getting comments on it and I just don't think it's fair on them.

My sister went to school with a William Shakespeare!

I knew a Peter Cook once, he was always being asked how Dudley was.

I know someone whose FIL is Peter Cooke. Also, there was someone at my school called David Gower.

When I was teaching, the D and T advisor was called John Thomas. You could tell who had read Lady Chatterley's Lover and who hadn't by the reaction when introduced. His full name was actually Anthony John Thomas. He chose to drop the Anthony. Odd choice

I know a 12 year old zayn malik, no issues within he name but obviously commented on occasionally

Zayn and Malik are really common names with Muslims. And as it turns out majority of first names are Surnames too for example Ibraheem Yusuf.

I knew a James Bond when I was at secondary school. He loved it (at the time).

I also had a college teacher whose married name was Tina Turner. She hated it. (Especially when everyone would tell her she was simply the best).

Think it very much depends on the celebrity and the persons personality. But I do think it’s a bit odd to knowingly give them an exact name of a celeb. It’s a lot to live up to and comes with a lot of comments.

Did you go to Newcastle college by any chance?
There was a Tina Turner there her real name was Martina but all the kids knew her by Tina Turner.

LeaderBee · 08/04/2025 15:15

Is it James Saville?

Welshmonster · 08/04/2025 15:17

don’t let it bother you. It’s not your kid. Let the whole class know what to do if they are being bullied.

I taught for 20 years. When I was picking a name for my kid many years ago, my husband was suggesting names and I was like no. They were a nightmare, no - their parent was a nightmare!

It could be worse. They could be named Ben Dover.

Tall blonde lady from the west yorkshire area around 2000 - 2002 ish by any chance? I had a form tutor called Tina Turner.

crockofshite · 08/04/2025 15:20

I know several Mickey Mouse's

Snorlaxo · 08/04/2025 15:21

The adults that I’ve known with the same name as a celebrity hate it, even if the celebrity is someone most people don’t have a strong opinion about. They’ve heard all the jokes and tend to invite people to say it out loud immediately rather than later.

Ponderingwindow · 08/04/2025 15:24

I had a coworker who gave her baby the exact same name, first and surname, as what was at the time probably the most famous pop star on the planet. We were all perplexed.

I’m sure she just liked the first name and didn’t think it was a big deal. No idea how it worked out for the child.

My DD’s best friend is called Holly Wood.

My mother also went to school with a Richard Head

I went to school with a Richard Stiff. What were his parents thinking?

I also know a lovely teenager called Arthur Christmas. He had a bit of fame when the film came out.

OMG, so do I, I wonder if it's the same person.

Me too. As kids we used to find it hilarious.
Winder if it’s the same one?

OfficerChurlish · 08/04/2025 15:46

Husband used to teach in US public schools and once had a pupil called Prince Charles. (Charles was the family name; guess he was lucky that it wasn't Andrew...)

OfficerChurlish · 08/04/2025 15:47

Oops; dupe.

sugarapplelane · 08/04/2025 15:49

I was at sixth form with an Emma Thompson, Jennifer Saunders and a Robbie Williams

Tarkan · 08/04/2025 16:11

DC1 went to school with and now works with an Indiana Jones (same guy, not two different ones). He goes by Indy to his friends but the name really suits him and I can’t actually imagine him with another name.

Just before Christmas DH and I were in a hospital waiting room when a Wayne Bruce was called. I’d seen the meme online about a Wayne Bruce being nicknamed Man Bat so I immediately thought that but didn’t say anything. Someone else in the waiting room commented later when Wayne Bruce was called again for something else and the family with him said he was actually known as Man Bat when he was at school. 🤣

BogRollBOGOF · 08/04/2025 16:16

I taught an Axl Rose. Not that one.
He was deliberately named by fans.

There's a difference in someone with the same name becoming famous later on and being named after them. I knew someone who was a child when an iconic event happened and the name will remain iconic. He learned to laugh it off and play with the association. It would have been mean for his parents to have knowingly imposed that on him, but it couldn't be helped that his name became iconic when he was about 7.

It also depends on the longevity and reason for the fame. While I rolled my eyed at a young "Sid James", he's unlikely to to get flack for it from his own generation, and it's only people 40+ years older than him who would associate the name with the Carry On era. Some fame comes and goes. Some associations are more positive than others. Some names are more distinctive than others. Michael Jackson is an odd one as both names are common, and he is more famous for his music than the negative behaviours. While it's not a name combination I would use (along with Janet or other famous siblings), it's not surprising that it's remained a common name combination.

I've also taught several Jack Daniels. I always thought it was a shame to name a baby after a relatively cheap whiskey. They didn't tend to be aspirational teenagers.

I avoided novelty names and tried to work through combinations of name/ nicknames/ initials to do what I reasonably could to avoid anything that would be inconvienient for my children to have to explain when they introduced themselves.

Emmz1510 · 08/04/2025 18:28

I bet it’s like Rylan Clark or something.,,,
I went to school with a girl called Audrey Hepburn.
But yes, unless the person became famous very recently or the parents genuinely had not heard of the celebrity, it’s a bit ridiculous and yes they are likely to be teased.

No, opposite end of the country! So there’s 2!

Ah 3 of them 😂 she was blonde but taught down in Hampshire!

Julieju1 · 08/04/2025 21:28

We have a friend who's son is called "Tom Jones", if people make a comment about it, they reply "it's not unusual"!

JaneGrint · 08/04/2025 22:01

I used to work with a Micheal Jackson.
He wasn’t impressed about having a famous namesake. He always looked very put upon whenever anyone remarked on it.

But he was about the same age as the famous one, so his parents couldn’t have known about it.
It’s a different matter if parents knowingly give their child the exact same name as someone famous, and it’s a weird choice to say the least.
