To feel miffed with my neighbours request?

I don’t know if I’m being sensitive or unreasonable here. My next door neighbour approached me at the weekend to give me dates of their summer garden parties.

For context, We live in a terrace of modern houses and we all have similar sized gardens, enclosed by neighbouring gardens, back and side.

So my neighbour told me about her planned garden parties over the next few months and there were 3 dates confirmed, 2 tbc.

But, she has specifically asked us that we don’t use our garden during the days of these parties.

I was a little take aback and said that we don’t have any scheduled bbqs or parties on those dates so they will be fine. But she said they didn’t want us to use our garden, AT ALL!
Apparently it will spoil the atmosphere if I was to “pop to the bins and empty my recycling” or if they could hear the washing machine on a spin if I left the back door open!

I did laugh at this stage and say well I can’t promise to not access my garden for the whole day.

She went on to say how her friends are “well to do” and they would expect privacy and not to be interrupted by unnecessary noise.

I got a little frustrated at this point and I asked if she was just letting me know or if the neighbours the other side were also being asked this. She assured me that, yes they were and they confirmed they won’t be using their garden or the gate to their garden at the back so as to not disturb her.

Am I being unreasonable to think that this request is unusually controlling?

Talk about entitlement lots of funny ideas on here id love a smoky BBQ whilst blasting baby shark in the garden for the kids on repeat. Following that its time to mow the lawn with extra trips to the bin just because

Writerbiter · 07/04/2025 22:58

Slightly expensive option but hire a skip. That has to be left on the road right outside the house. Fuck it hire two, see if the other neighbour needs one as well. Spend all of the party merrily chucking things in preferably shouting things like "Steve, do you need these old copies of Big Jugs mag?"

Kneeboobs · 07/04/2025 22:59

I would be going back and saying "on consideration, this does not work for me,what would work is you cancelling all garden parties or renting a well to do private garden or moving to a detached house before the party dates.

ilovepixie · 07/04/2025 22:59

I’d be playing Black Lace’s greatest hits, especially Gang Bang at full volume on repeat.

Aliceglass · 07/04/2025 18:55

😂 This sounds like a great idea! I can just imagine her face now!

Do this, op. You HAVE to. With rollers in and a fag hanging out.

Then report back.

ThinkingAboutMyLifeChoices · 07/04/2025 23:01

This reminds me of a friends husband
Their NDN had a garden party every year for all of their aged, very well to do friends from some club or other. The finest china, tablecloths, etc even drinks/canapes being served by a couple of waiters
The party was in full swing, light jazz music wafting through the air, the chink of chintzy cups and saucers
Until my friends Husband, who I might add was a fan of Thrash Metal and had a rather impressive sound system in his Man Cave at the bottom of the garden put a CD on at full volume.....
Said garden party was no more
Pay back for the snotty neighbour asking my friend and her husband almost weekly not to park their people carrier (they have 5 kids and 2 dogs) on the road as it 'brought down the area' and to refrain from playing with the kids after 5pm on a Summers evening

I know you've had loads of great suggestions but my youngest plays the trumpet. You can borrow him if you like. He's anyone's for a bacon sandwich.

Imagine! I’m hoping I’m in the clear here because she never married nor had kids!

Unmarried people & people with no kids also use mumsnet OP.

Kneeboobs · 07/04/2025 23:08

Oh yes let's start a playlist to blast at the party guests,I'll start with:
Nicky Minaj - Super Freaky Girl
Nicky M again - Anaconda
Colour Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
Kelis - Milkshake
Christina Aguilera - Dirty

Argh CF neighbours are the devil’s work!
i actually wouldn’t do anything except what I would normally do in my own fucking garden. Ignore ignore ignore. If she says anything just reply that you couldn’t possibly have thought she was serious and walk away.

Oh have a sense of humour will ya?!

I'm visualising Margot Leadbetter from 'The Good Life' here....

Margot had a sense of humour and a good heart though. 😊

Margot famously did not have a sense of humour! Lol she was wonderful though - and never once asked the Goodes not to use their garden when entertaining Sir or Mrs Mountshaft!

SociableAtWork · 07/04/2025 23:16

Think I’d invite MY friends and their kids over and hire a hot tub those weekends AND do some jetwashing AND I’d maybe do some dog-sitting for some really yappy dogs 😂

In the meantime, I’d be praying for rain.

WTF - this is batshit crazy madness and complete entitlement on her part. I’m speechless on your behalf. Please, if nothing else, invite all your other neighbours to yours on those days (and just stand along the fence staring at them 😂)

This is one thread I hope the Daily Mail do pick up!

Peawhack · 07/04/2025 23:16

Is her name hyacinth?

LaReole · 07/04/2025 23:17

No invitation for you.....🙁. I would have said....oh it seems we are having a party at the same time. WHAT FUN🤗🤗!

Nah, you need some good sweary rock/heavy metal.
Seether - Fuck It
Slipknot - People = Shit
Not rock, but Kat McSnatch - You Are A Cunt, (<song title, I'm not calling anyone names!) and Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq - I've No More Fucks To Give are excellent. 😁

Lostinidea · 07/04/2025 23:24

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/04/2025 22:51

Oh, I’d enjoy this. I’d be out in the garden in a deckchair and being quite loud.

”Del! ‘Ere, DEL! Bring us some more Lambrini would you mate, this has gone all warm. What? Yeah, a pint. And can you pop daaahn the shops an’ get me 20 ciggies? Cheers love. Now, put Cheesy Dance Choons of the 90s back on before you go!”

It isn't a party unless Cotton Eyed Joe is blasting out the hi-fi.

Gosh they sound awful! Glad I'm not the only one who has snobby neighbours! I’m pleased to hear this tactic worked, heavy metal for the win!!

Play Pulp’s ‘Common People’ all day 😂

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/04/2025 23:28

She’s nuts Smile and nod, then life as normal on the days of the parties( and on any other day)
Who the fuck would think it’s normal to ask that of their neighbours?!!

MarketSt · 07/04/2025 23:28

Absolutely please rent a hot tub for you and a bouncy castle for your kids for those dates.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/04/2025 23:29

'She went on to say how her friends are “well to do” and they would expect privacy and not to be interrupted by unnecessary noise.'

Time for her friends to find out how the other half live, then. It'll be an education for them.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 07/04/2025 23:29

I thought she was going to be inviting you to attend all of the garden parties!
She's awful expecting you to essentially stay inside out of the way so you don't embarrass her.
Edited to suggest all you other neighbours have a street party across all your front gardens. Being neighbourly and all that, complete with deckchairs!

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 07/04/2025 23:32

Surely you intend to comply.... her friends are "well to do"

Could you put up a portable hot tub and invite local swingers by Facebook?

YourAzureEagle · 07/04/2025 23:32

Aliceglass · 07/04/2025 18:55

😂 This sounds like a great idea! I can just imagine her face now!

I'd stage a big fake domestic with lots of language that's not for the vicar - or buy a garden incinerator and burn some wet grass for maximum smoke.

The cheek of her!
