To think Lucy Connolly has been made an example of?

Have any of you read this article about Lucy Connolly who tweeted inflammatory comments following the Southport murders? I have to admit that at the time I was fully supportive of having her locked up, with the key thrown away. But reading this article made me view it all a little differently. Surely she has done her time?

Ah yes “context”

The reason police allowed swastikas
to be waved around

It's weird how swastikas being waved around, and posters compelling people to decapitate feminists are fine, but this isn't.

To be clear, I think the post this lady made was abhorrent, I just don't understand why other actions of a similarly vile, offensive and incendiary nature are seemingly fine with the authorities.

The person with the Swatstika was arrested.

How long did they serve in prison?

Same.

It’s not about the crime. It’s about who commits it now.

How can anyone pretend otherwise when the government are literally bringing in two tier sentencing?

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/04/2025 14:57

TENSsion · 07/04/2025 14:48

Why not?

You're saying it isn’t threatening violence that’s the crime but “who” threatens violence

Asking your God for something, even something awful, is a prayer.

Encouraging 10,000 real life people to set fire to hotels is against the law. Using the murder of 3 children to stir up racial hatred that caused tremendous damage and cost £millions is a crime.

I can't believe you can't tell the difference.🤯

Brefugee · 07/04/2025 14:59

my sympathy is limited. Because we all know that people like Diane Abbott and JKR get death threats and so on, constantly. And nobody is ever jailed for them.

So, if this one is in jail, then i want them in jail too. and if they are not in jail, then i want an alternative sentence for people who have tweeted death threats.

Telling your congregation to commit acts of violence is no different to telling your followers on social media the same, in fact it's worse as you're in a position of influence and authority

It is unbelievable something this basic has to be spelled out for you

No-one has said it was ok. The sentence was absolutely disproportionate.

These were emergency measures brought in to deal with the rioting and attacks on police that were happening all over the country, the sentences were harsh to act as a deterrent. Do you want to live in a country where that sort of thing happens regularly? You can bet sure they’ll think twice next time.

Sure. There’ll always be a reason to excuse some and condemn others.

It didn’t happen with the Harehills rioting.

For those of you defending this woman, here is the Judges sentencing report-

https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/R-v-Lucy-Connolly.pdf

Even her own counsel agreed that it was a Category A offence and that she absolutely intended to incite serious violence. She also said in a message that she would ‘play the mental health card’ should she be investigated.

And for those who can’t be bothered she will only serve 40% of the 31 months in prison, the rest on licence.

The judge's blurb does not change the fact that the sentence was absolutely ridiculous compared to what many serious criminals get.

I want to live in a country where sex offenders are locked up and those posting offensive tweets are fined and/or are given community hours.

That’s because , for the particular crime she pled guilty to the sentencing STARTS at 3 years. There’s nothing else. He already gave her less due to mitigating factors. Surely that’s not hard to understand?

He wasn’t just asking his God in a private prayer through was he? He was preaching to his followers that they curse the Jews and children and ruin their homes. So why isn’t he facing any prison sentence?

And yet paedophiles walk free. If I were a judge I'd look at rehashing sentencing if literally all they could do was send a tweeter to prison for 31 months.

It's a shame MPs aren't doing something about our batshit sentencing rules instead of encouraging the police to chase tweeters.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 07/04/2025 15:58

The judge's remarks are interesting.

I don't agree with the statement that she intended to incite serious violence. She was upset, went for a walk, calmed down, and deleted it. She then tweeted later that violence is not the answer. I don't think that what she wrote is OK, and I think she did betray racist tendencies, but I still think that community service and a fine would have been more appropriate. Someone who intended to incite violence would surely have not deleted it and would have written more.

She's definitely racist, though. What he did was down to his flaws as an individual and nothing to do with his race or skin colour or country of origin or immigration status. It's incredibly stupid to extrapolate his terrible actions to a group as a whole instead of seeing that the responsibility lies with him alone. I'm sure she wouldn't like it if a British person committed a terrible crime abroad and the people in that country immediately hated all British people. She would see that as a really stupid conclusion to draw. So....

But comperable to what happens when there is widespread civil violence. This is what happens when people incite violence. I'm in NI, so im used to it. Fortunately it's much less frequent than it used to be. I'm also used to smiting sermons.😆

It's like some posters here were unaware the laws apply to white, English people too.🙈

Good job your not I guess because sentencing guidelines are set by the government, not judges...

ThisFluentBiscuit · 07/04/2025 16:08

Just thought of something....apparently Connolly's tweet was re-tweeted 940 times. Surely everyone who did that is also inciting violence? I appreciate that the author of the tweet is the one who gets the worst punishment, but can those 940 people really get away scot-free with re-posting a tweet that was serious enough to get its author locked up?

Shouldn't the re-posters be fined or something?

Not sure how this works.

TENSsion · 07/04/2025 16:10

Police and CPS go for easy targets in regard to hate crimes and inciting violence.

Cant believe she’s been imprisoned for 31 months!! Whilst actual criminals are getting let off for far worse. Makes me so angry. 31 months over a tweet. Pathetic.

She is an actual criminal. So she was jailed for her crime. And rightly so.
