I have 74 tops/ T-shirts
22 dresses
12 pairs of jeans
7 shorts
3 jackets
2 coats
14 jumpers
8 pyjamas
7 hoodies
2 dressing gowns

This Is 2 chest of drawers and one wardrobe. Is this excessive as Dh says or about right.

I wouldn't dare count what I have but it films three and a half wardrobes and 2 and a half drawer sets. Plus the stuff I've just boxed up that was winter things. I buy lots but I buy cheap and cheerful!

healthybychristmas · 07/04/2025 10:45

I feel I have been given permission to get more clothes now!

How do you dress for most occasions with that little clothes or as I stated in my post is it because you don’t do a range of things?
I can’t imagine how 6 t shirst, 2 t shirts and 2 vests actually dresses you appropriately for most things. So if you’re at a nice lunch you can only wear a t shirt? Out for dinner? Christening? Wedding? Christmas party? Do you work? You would need to do laundry 3 times to get through the week with only 2 non t shirt tops.

Edited

You can do most things I; the same clothes you do other things in surely? I do lots - theatre, meals out, performing, weekends away, the occasional wedding…same clothes for all except the wedding. And if 8 had another formal occasion, the wedding clothes would work. I have a range of outdoor/fitness things but not masses. What are all these occasions you go to that need very specific clothing?

TheChosenTwo · 07/04/2025 12:10

I’m not counting but probably around :
10 sweatshirts/jumpers
20 dresses (some occasion ones but most day to day)
2 pairs of jeans
3 skirts
10 various tops/shirts

a couple of vests for layering.
Mostly though I wear a lot of gym gear and joggers for being at home. I only own gym T-shirts, I’d never wear one otherwise.

RejoiceandSing · 07/04/2025 12:21

All of my clothes fit into two large laundry bags plus a small daysack.
That includes day-to-day clothes and formal clothes and some clothes in the middle that don't get a lot of use, but doesn't include coats. I consider my coat quota a bit excessive at the moment, because I had to buy a new winter coat and new summer jacket to fit my wheelchair, but my old coats still fit and I wear them occasionally.
ETA: shoes. One pair of boots, one pair of trainers, one pair of slippers, two identical pairs of walking sandals (long story when I was a teenager, they're old), one pair of smart black shoes, one pair of sparkly party shoes (entirely an indulgence now I can wear whatever shoes I like without risking getting them muddy)

I don't have a 'limited lifestyle' LOL but a couple of years ago decided to have a major overhaul and follow this challenge (333).
So I have at the moment (spring)

Two pairs of jeans
Two pairs cargo trousers
One pair leggings
Three jumpers
Two long jumpers
One dress
One coat
Two cardigans
One pair ballet pumps
One pair DMs
One par Converse
Two handbags
Two long sleeved tshirts
Two scarves
Five blouses
Five short sleeve t-shirt.

I keep out of season stuff in a box and rotate it every season, so April, July, October and December Every time I find something I forgot I had!

Out of interest, do you live in the UK? I don't feel our seasons are defined enough to swap out clothes 4 times a year. A nice day in late October or February could be warmer than a horrible day in May. (Sidenote: until I moved to England, I didn't get the concept winter/summer clothes at all, apart from holiday things. In Scotland, long sleeved t-shirts and jumpers could potentially be worn in any month!)

RejoiceandSing · 07/04/2025 12:25

Technically there is also a wardrobe full of my old teen/ child clothes at my parents' house. We keep meaning to get round to a clearout, but I wouldn't count them as "my clothes" as such, on account of the fact that even the biggest items haven't fit me for a decade.

Wildflowers99 · 07/04/2025 12:26

Off the top of my head
8 pairs of leggings - 3 sports pairs, the rest plain black
4 pairs of jeans
5 hoodies/sweatshirts
5 jumpers/cardis
5 pairs of shorts
30 odd tops - satin type shirts for work, going out/nicer tops, a lot of plain long sleeve and a few t-shirts
2 skirts
10ish dresses - work, summer, strappy, couple of ‘Christmas’ dresses
3 pyjamas
4 coats - 1 waterproof, one duvet style, 1 Borg and 1 shorter puffer
12 shoes - 3 pairs of trainers, 3 pairs of sandals, 2 heels, 2 pairs work, rubber ankle wellies, UGGS

😳

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/04/2025 12:41

I’ll just go and count mine. I do have 12 pairs of jeans but wear them daily. 22 popover blouses and 19 T shirts. 8 vest tops.
leather, denim and padded jackets
4 pairs boots, 2 sketchers. 3 Mary Jane’s instead of sandals.
2 Pyjamas, 2 towelling robes
No work clothes.but 5 casual dresses.
74 tops seems excessive.
Jeans ok if you genuinely wear them all
i have 2 kids wardrobes( I’m short!) and that’s it

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/04/2025 12:42

Oh and 4 jersey bomber jackets I wear over blouses if it’s cold

Yes in the NE of England. You are right, our seasons are not as defined, so there are some things eg jeans that are there all year round. But you can take a punt that you are more likely to need a wool polo neck for example in the winter than in high summer. It's also the colours - in colder months, I tend to wear darker colours, so in summer I would for example three pastel t shirts and one long sleeve white one, whereas in winter I might have three long sleeved dark t shirts and an extra jumper.
It all sounds very administrative heavy but it's really not! The advantages are any gaps in your wardrobe are immediately obvious and you also know exactly what you have to choose from.

Bikechic · 07/04/2025 12:53

I counted my things recently and have about 75 items altogether including shoes but not including nightwear and sportswear. Work clothes are same as home clothes for me.

Lilyhatesjaz · 07/04/2025 13:48

I have more than this but some of mine are older than my children who are both in their 20s

Gogogo12345 · 07/04/2025 13:51

spinningmachine · 06/04/2025 21:39

Just meaning not work clothes.

In my case they are the same.

But around 10 trousers 20 tops 1 dress 3 pairs shorts 1 pair boots, walking shoes and 2 sandals, one for walking and one more deessy

Howabout the blouses she mentioned? Trousers and a nice top are perfectly adequate for most of those efents

LaurieFairyCake · 07/04/2025 07:06

16 rails of clothes
84 drawers
at least 200 pairs of shoes

I dont have ‘work clothes’ just (a gazillion) clothes.

and this is after I took 15 black bags to the charity shop.

I feel quite minimalist now, and I‘ve got loads!

No you can’t really dress appropriately for all those occasions after a week of work owning only a handful of t shirts and 2 blouses.

Sure but you’ve also been wearing the 2 blouses all week at work, so you’re doing laundry like 4 times a week for the same tops?

They asked on " home clothes" so wouldn't be worn to work

Daisyvodka · 07/04/2025 14:22

I would be shocked if I had less than 50 tops. I've lost weight and am replacing my wardrobe slowly so numbers are a bit hazy.

The coats/jackets numbers are what's shaming me though, but I am very sensitive to temperature changes and walk everywhere so I will let myself off slightly....

The posted I was replying to was stating the total clothes she owned though.

WingBingo · 07/04/2025 14:24

I have way more than this. Different people prioritise different things.

no big deal

LongRangeDessertGroup · 07/04/2025 14:24

I use the Stylebook app so I know exactly how many items I’ve got in each category. Looking at previous replies I’ve obviously got way too many…

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 07/04/2025 14:33

I read through your list and thought it sounded excessive but then thought that I've got probably almost as much, and certainly more in the costs and jackets department.

I dread to think how many pairs of jeans I've got. I know that, in my drawers, I've got 4 pairs of Size 14 jeans which are slightly too big for me, and 3 pairs of Size 12 jeans which are on the tight side. I've also got a box in the wardrobe with some size 10 jeans and trousers in which I haven't worn for years but haven't thrown out as that's admitting I'm never getting back into them!

I mostly work from home so pretty much live in leggings and jeans with a "smart" top half. I have 2 pairs of S 14 work trousers and 2 pairs of S12. I've also got a couple of work dresses which I rarely wear.

We've got a 6 door wardrobe and I have 4 of the 6 sections. We've got a huge 4 drawer chest of drawers and I have 3 of the 4 drawers. DH rarely buys clothes whereas I've got a dreadful Vinted habit.

ItGhoul · 07/04/2025 14:33

Do you wear all the stuff you've got? Are all your tops different? I'd say that if you've got stuff you never wear, or lots of your tops are basically just slight variations on the same thing (eg you've got 10 plain grey t-shirts or something) then it's too much. But if you're regularly wearing everything it's OK - assuming you've got room to store it all.
