I have 74 tops/ T-shirts
22 dresses
12 pairs of jeans

3 jackets
2 coats
14 jumpers
8 pyjamas
7 hoodies

This Is 2 chest of drawers and one wardrobe. Is this excessive as Dh says or about right.

6 "Nice" tops for leaving the house in
1 Pair of jeans
1 Pair of shoes
30 assorted socks
40 pairs of underwear (recently replaced in a bulk sale)
1 Hoodie
2 long drapey cardigan things

When I'm just staying at home (most days, I'm disabled and only leave the house once every other week or so) I wear shorts and old tops that are stained or otherwise not suitable to wear out of the house but are very comfortable. I've got 6 pairs of shorts and around 20 old tops.

Sofiewoo · 07/04/2025 06:48

Sounds completely normal.

I think the people who don’t own many clothes have quite limited lifestyles.
74 tops is easily made up when you split it into occasions and seasons, 4 basic t shirts, 4 vests, a couple of long sleeves, some casual winter tops, workout tops, work blouses, nice summery tops etc.

GoatCatTaco · 07/04/2025 06:50

It's majorly excessive!
And you've not started on shoes.
2 Jeans
3 summer trousers
2 walking/gardening trousers
1 shorts
2 summer skirts
1 formal dress
Guessing 15 teeshirts
4 jumpers
3 coats
0 jackets
0 dressing gowns
3 PJs
1 set sports kit

Add on work wear - 2 trousers, 6 tops, 5 jumpers, 3 thermal vests.

I think I just don’t ever throw anything out. I do wear everything I have though.

If you wear everything and genuinely love each item it’s fine. If you have anything that you are only really wearing because it’s there, get rid of it.

I don’t have as many clothes as you but I am a ruthless declutterer and I genuinely love all my clothes and how they make me look/feel.

Lentilweaver · 07/04/2025 06:51

Way way less. I have no space. And I dont need them
Only 2 jeans.
Maybe 7- 8 pairs of shoes.
Maybe 8 dresses.
I do have more than 2 coats. Perhaps 5?

Pesk17 · 07/04/2025 06:54

You probably don't need to buy pyjamas for the next few years. Just wear a pair whilst one pair is in the wash. Possibly have a third pair on standby. I suppose you might also have a couple of sets for the other season. When they're worn out recycle and move onto the next lot. You really don't need 8.

Or they don’t have unlimited amounts of cash to spend on clothes!

Tops wise I reckon I have:
6 t shirts
2 blouses
2 work out tops
2 vest tops (will probably get more for summer to be fair)

I do ruthlessly declutter but I also don’t have the cash to have so many clothes - or the space.

Where do you keep 74 tops?!

iseenyouwithkefir · 07/04/2025 06:55

I don't make distinctions about "home" or "work" clothes vs others, but I don't think anyone else - not your husband, and not someone here - can tell you that the amount of clothes or breakdown in types of clothes is "excessive". I'd ask your husband why he says that your wardrobe is "excessive" - is he concerned that there is not enough space for the clothes you own, or that you spend too much money on clothes that could be used elsewhere in the household budget, or something else? Or is he wanting you to be aware that you have "enough" and think twice about buying anything new in order to save money or space? Since it's your wardrobe, life, and body, your comfort level is the really relevant thing. If you're thinking maybe you should cut back then it's worth considering - but think for yourself about it, how you really feel.

My breakdown of clothes is different from yours - fewer jeans, no dressing gowns, but a LOT of jackets and shorts (and boots, and bags!), but I'd say I probably have quite a few more pieces overall.

How do you dress for most occasions with that little clothes or as I stated in my post is it because you don’t do a range of things?
I can’t imagine how 6 t shirst, 2 t shirts and 2 vests actually dresses you appropriately for most things. So if you’re at a nice lunch you can only wear a t shirt? Out for dinner? Christening? Wedding? Christmas party? Do you work? You would need to do laundry 3 times to get through the week with only 2 non t shirt tops.

Radra · 07/04/2025 07:01

I am sure I have way too much but I don't understand how some can have so little.

What about weddings, funerals, other formal events? I have several outfits for these that I don't wear often but I do need.

Similarly I have about 7 outfits worth of summer clothing primarily for holidays which I don't wear regularly but again I feel like I do need.

I have summer workout gear and winter workout gear

A couple of nice outfits for summer, a couple for winter to go out / socialise in

Casual clothes for WFH/weekend - both summer and winter

And then work clothing..

crumblingschools · 07/04/2025 07:06

How big is the wardrobe? Does your DH have room for his clothes? Do you have the money to spend on these clothes? Is money tight if you don’t work? Do you have ‘going out’ clothes too?

anon2022anon · 07/04/2025 07:06

I'm currently using Indyx to log outfits (out of interest as to what I wear/ how often/ value per wear), and at the minute I have about 180 items on there. That's just from my winter wardrobe, and there's definitely stuff I've missed or haven't logged yet, and I have a suitcase of spring summer to bring down soon. Maybe two dozen of those items listed are belts/ bags/ shoes.

Do you wear lots of it, and have you got the space to store it? If so, what's the problem?

LaurieFairyCake · 07/04/2025 07:06

16 rails of clothes
84 drawers
at least 200 pairs of shoes

I dont have ‘work clothes’ just (a gazillion) clothes.

and this is after I took 15 black bags to the charity shop.

crumblingschools · 07/04/2025 07:11

@LaurieFairyCake where do you fit all that in?

FlyHighWithTheRightAngles · 07/04/2025 07:13

I have lots of clothes, a lot more than you’ve listed. I don’t think it’s excessive at all.

Didimum · 07/04/2025 07:13

Much less. I do a capsule wardrobe though.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 07/04/2025 07:15

That's sounds excessive to me!

LaurieFairyCake · 07/04/2025 07:15

crumblingschools Pax wardrobes in every room and every hallway. All doubled up (2 rails to a cupboard). I’ve got 96 jumpers 🤦‍♀️ (jumpers are my favourite)

HelenWheels · 07/04/2025 07:17

not a lot
when i buy a top i wear it for work as i work 4 days a week
i have very few not work wear, unless they are old charity shop shirts

crumblingschools · 07/04/2025 07:18

@LaurieFairyCake wow I thought I had a lot of jumpers!

Timeforchangeornot · 07/04/2025 07:20

I have waaay less but I can't afford more 😁

RitaAndFrank · 07/04/2025 07:20

Sounds like a lot to me, op. I haven’t added mine up but I probably have a lot too - I fill a chest of drawers and a wardrobe plus have coats and boots etc under the stairs and hanging up. But I still don’t think I have nearly as many tops, jeans, shorts or dresses as you!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 07/04/2025 07:27

stargazer02 · 06/04/2025 21:43

5 everyday tops
2 fancier tops
2 jeans
1 jumper
2 cardigans
4 pjs
2 leggings for around the house/lounging.
1 workout outfit
2 sets of old clothes for painting/gardening.
1 swimming costume
3 thermal underlayer tops

1 summer dress
2 summer skirts

1 winter coat
1 spring/autumn jacket

1 pair flip flops
1 pair sandals
1 pair flat boots,
1 pair trainers
1 pair crocs for garden/beach etc
1 pair slippers

Losing weight and will need to shop soon but will likely do one in one out except I'd like more trousers.

I really like the sound of this! I wouldn't be comfortable with quite so few items of clothing, maybe 2 more each of the everyday things, but it's so much more 'me' than the '78 summer dresses' posters. I already feel overwhelmed with what I have got! My trouble is I'm a 'yo-yo' dieter so not everything fits me all the time. I also keep tops that are old and stained, and jeans with frayed bottoms, because I have an active outdoorsey kid-centric lifestyle and there's no point trying to look well presented, and it's wrong to throw them away when they're still perfectly wearable! But then I like to buy 3-4 nice new things every year too so new clothes do generally outnumber retired clothes!

I don't have a 'limited lifestyle' LOL but a couple of years ago decided to have a major overhaul and follow this challenge (333).
So I have at the moment (spring)

Two pairs of jeans
Two pairs cargo trousers
One pair leggings

One dress
One coat
Two cardigans
One pair ballet pumps
One pair DMs
One par Converse
Two handbags
Two long sleeved tshirts
