To want Porn Star Martinis to be renamed?

I don't think I'm a prude, but I feel a bit self-conscious ordering "A porn star martini, please". It's a shame because I quite like them.

We went into a "family-friendly" bar from a chain called "The Lounges" (every one has a different name, like Albero Lounge, Edmundo Lounge, etc) and on the menu there it says "Passion Fruit Martini... a cocktail fit for a movie star", which nicely conveys the idea without everyone having to explain to their curious 7-year-old reading the menu what a porn star is.

(The same chain has also renamed Sex On The Beach" to "Lounge On The Beach"... that one wouldn't put me off so much in the original form, but I don't like peach flavour drinks anyway 😂.)

It's hideous, isn't it? I don't know why they can't just be called Passion fruit martinis

TheJollyMoose · 04/04/2025 15:17

YABU. I really don’t see the issue.

GroovyChick87 · 04/04/2025 15:17

I can't say it bothers me. In lots of places they are called passion fruit martini anyway. What about sex on the beach and screaming orgasm?

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 04/04/2025 15:20

Most places call them passionfruit martinis now, in my experience (which is vaster than it should be as it's my favourite common cocktail). I think the old name will die out over the years.

Sugarfish · 04/04/2025 15:20

It’s an alcoholic drink, so should only be ordered by adults and doesn’t need a family friendly name. If you don’t want to explain to a child what a porn star is, maybe just order something else?

burnoutbabe · 04/04/2025 15:21

Isn’t it the shot of champagne that makes it a porn star? Else it’s just a passion fruit martini.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 04/04/2025 15:22

I think the cans in M&S are Passion Fruit Martini and Peach on The Beach. 😬 Much prefer it tbh!

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 04/04/2025 15:22

Couldn’t you just explain that it’s for adults?

PizzaPowder · 04/04/2025 15:22

An adult name for an adult drink. Don't see the issue.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 04/04/2025 15:22

Or tell them the ingredients?

primroseandsunshine · 04/04/2025 15:24

Even when it’s on the menu as porn star martini you can ask for a passionfruit martini. They are bartenders so they are trained and already know it’s the same thing

user2848502016 · 04/04/2025 15:24

Lots of places call them passion fruit martini, but doesn’t bother me either way tbh

This about Sex On The Beach:

"The same chain has also renamed Sex On The Beach" to "Lounge On The Beach"..."

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 04/04/2025 15:29

Yes agree. I would also like them to rename the Irish car bomb cocktail which is very popular in US.

SunsetCocktails · 04/04/2025 15:31

I love a pornstar martini, me (especially at sunset…on a tropical beach….)

Did you not read the OP? She’s not complaining about the name in an adults-only venue, but in one where there will be kids overhearing orders and reading menus.

’porn star martini’ is a truly grim name.

Oldglasses · 04/04/2025 15:36

I think 'porn star' s a grim name though, although I don't see the issue with general adult names for cocktails drunk by adults, ie, sex on the beach or screaming orgasm.

Mielikki · 04/04/2025 15:37

A “family friendly” cocktail lounge sounds dreadful. Cocktail lounges are SUPPOSED to be louche. Otherwise where’s the fun?

Bloody hell. Ignorance, stupidity or what?

Yes M & S cans are passion star martini or peach in beach.

Joolsin · 04/04/2025 15:39

I agree with you, op, and am definitely going to refer to both named cocktails by the less grim names from now on. Thank you!!!

CatusFlatus · 04/04/2025 15:43

Totally agree. It's normalising and glamourising pornography.

Dawnchorussinging · 04/04/2025 15:43

I agree OP.

It's all part of this " normalisation of Porn isn't it?

I 've never particularly been enamoured about the name " sex on the beach" but that is totally different because it's name is based on a normal human activity. it's not about the glamourisation of an industry selling dehumanised sexual activity and whose very existence is all about violence and exploitation for profit.

Snap!

PlasticPassion · 04/04/2025 15:44

I’m all for that. Some of the names are just stupid. I used to sometimes want a cocktail when I was out but didn’t want to order one because a lot of the time if I ordered a sex on the beach or similar I would get lewd comments or smirks. I’m extremely shy and it makes me too uncomfortable.
