Broken radiator in spring....(not boiler!)

I had to call in sick as I had got my finger stuck in my bathroom plughole, I got stuck while demonstrating to my son why he shouldn’t stick his fingers down the plughole because they could get stuck. Two incredibly attractive fire fighters had to get my finger out.

A colleague once called in sick as his cat had been raped, by another cat, not a dog or a human.

@JustSawJohnny I'm pretty sure original Tiddles was actually dead.

Well yes, but it would've been funny!

There is a funny podcast clip where Will Mellor talks about an incident where their cat went missing, kids devastated, then it turned up but had been run over. He spent thousands on vets bills and operations before eventually it passed away. Kids very upset again. If I remember rightly, he paid out a lot more for cremation and had a little bit of a pet funeral with an urn kept in the living room o the kids 'could keep Tiddles with them'.

Then the cat walked in 😂

He was so angry about paying out all that money for someone else's cat 😆

She got her ‘mum’ to ring up saying that ‘she thought that x had been kidnapped’. Strangely the ‘mum’ hadn’t thought to inform the police. Worst thing is she’s still working there! I sometimes look her up our our Directory (Government Department). And there were of course many other excuses.

FoxRedPuppy · 05/04/2025 16:13

My friend was once very late for work because she got the wrong train, and ended up on a job-stop one to London (we’re in Yorkshire). Her normal train was a London one, but one that stopped at the town where the office is.

We thought it was hilarious 🤣

IamMaz · 05/04/2025 17:52

Lots of these aren’t reasons for being off sick. They should be requests for annual leave or unpaid leave, shouldn’t they?

Is that from Leeds station?

Some platforms are split into two 6a and 6b. They are up to 3 carriages long and for example, trains from 6a go east and 6b go west. Sometimes both trains are together and in a rush, board the first one you see without looking.

When I was looking around Leeds for uni, I boarded the wrong train at Sheffield. and it stops at every single stop and took 1.5 hours. Yet the more direct one only stops at Wakefield Westgate and is 20 mins.

Some of them have four sections, A-D. It's a complete PITA if you are changing trains and get platformed at the opposite end of the station from your connection. They will often sign the stopping train with the destination prior its terminus, e.g. the 'Poppleton' train is actually the stopping train to York via Harrogate, not the more direct one via Selby.

My GF was a Sister on a children's ward. We had been to a hospital party the night before, and one of her student nurses was the life and sole. Drinking dancing, kissing all the doctors, trying even me with Elizabeth standing by my side!!
We were on duty as usual before our 0730 start time. Guess who phoned in sick. She was told that it would be put down as unpaid leave and deducted from her Holiday Allowance. She was in by 0815.

I once had to call in that I was locked in flat…boyfriend had left for business trip overseas and taken both sets of keys!

Work found it hilarious and kept ringing to offer to post pizza through letter box/ hold a blanket to catch me if I jumped out of window etc. Luckily got hold of boyfriend just before he boarded plane, who contacted colleague who was able to retrieve spare car keys from his desk, drive to airport, retrieve flat keys from boyfriend’s car, and come and let me out!

I called into work to tell them I could now come in and my boss said it wasn’t worth it for the couple of hours left and to take day off… and that they wouldn’t take it off my annual leave as they’d all had such a good laugh at my expense!

Lovely boyfriend’s colleague!!

It’s dreadful isn’t it! But calling in sick to go to see a GP for a spider bite in England seems made up! If I lived somewhere tropical it wouldn’t have been so strange I guess, which is why I think my manager asked for a photo!

Many people don’t realise how invasive false widow spiders have become and how painful and damaging their bites are!

I know this is t the point of the thread but I don’t realise until today that spiders in the UK bite people… Had woken in the night with an inexplicable paid in my neck like it had been stung or bitten.
Mebtioned this to a friends amd she said it was probably a spider. Has Japanese yo bee when rolled into s spider once.. I live in an old cottage with lots of spiders /eeek!

One day - broke a molar tooth
The next day - depression
The day after - her kidneys were failing!
Then it was the weekend and she trotted in right as rain on the Monday, kidneys never mentioned again.

Thankfully she left soon after, but I could go on and on with the excuses. Really excelled herself with the 3 day in a row run above.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 06/04/2025 08:05

A colleague rang in and said she had burnt her head because the water to wash her hair was too hot. She made it in the following day though and no sign of any damage... after that if people had been off they were jokingly asked if they had been boiling their head 😅

Guinea pig had a fit

💯I would not be going in if one of my piggies needed urgent care! Imagine leaving an animal to suffer 😨

Day off for exposure once - in August!

To be fair, we had gone to a horse show about 1.5 hours drive away and a massive storm struck while we were there, soaking all of us through completely with icy water. Had to load horses, drive them back to their respective stables & get them bedded down before going home to warm up, so about 2.5 hours absolutely freezing & sopping wet.

Also the time I had arranged to go in late (I work flexi time) as the cat was due his jabs at the vets - plenty of time, I had loads of flexi saved up, we weren't that busy at work that day, vet appointment was at 9.30am, I work 30 mins from home, arranged to go in by 11am at the latest.

Except the cat had different ideas. First time I'd taken him to the vet, very nervous ex-stray. I eventually called the vet at about 10am to cancel as I hadn't got him caught, then phone the boss to say I wouldn't be in until lunchtime as I had to stop the bleeding and then clean up the massive splashes of blood (from me of course) that were all over the floor from the cat's room to the bathroom.

Cat had managed to rip up both my hands, one leg (both upper and lower) and my hip as he escaped from my hold and ran down my leg. Bleeding took about half an hour to fully stop then I had to put dressings and antiseptic on everything. Boss has now dubbed Tobias "the man eating tiger" after I showed her some of the holes in me a few days later, to be fair to the cat it was mostly claws not bites!

I’ve been surprised by the amount of people who think an ill animal should just left to suffer during usual working hours.

I don't think anyone is saying that people should leave an unwell animal to suffer (and if they are then that's totally heartless) - just that you would take the day off as holiday or unpaid leave. The point of the thread is that taking a pet to the vet is not a valid reason for sick leave.

Very few work places offer unpaid leave or holiday that can be booked on the day it is taken, so most people would of course phone in sick, unless their employer was someone who didn’t require notice for holiday or unpaid leave.

I was in charge of a team of people. One of whom had a husband who she had previously said has serious liver problems. She came to me one day head slightly bowed to say they had an important medical appointment where some test results would be given and could she take the day off. As is normal I said yes of course and that obviously this would be compassionate leave.

I thought no more of it. Then on the day she was off in the evening I happened to be browsing through Facebook. A friend had gone to a Summer race meeting (good day out), and (I had not realised) was also friends with the lady in my team. There she was in all the pictures having a marvellous time. I hauled her over the coals the next day.

I worked with a colleague who phoned in because she’d been landscaping her garden and uncovered an unexploded WW2 bomb. In fairness, when she phoned the police the bomb squad were called out, her street was cordoned off, and it made the local news, so we did believe her.

This wins the thread

I went out on a work night a rare occurrence . whacked my head on a bar stool
whilst doing up my shoe. Before even having a sip of wine. Egg on my head and was still feeling dizzy and sick the next day. 111 told me to take the day off work and rest.

I once tried to call off work in my late teens because I had been made temporarily "homeless" by a tornado... it had caused roof damage to the small block of flats & police wouldn't allow any residents to access the property.

I had stayed overnight at a friends, had no clean clothes & my manager still insisted I go in. I don't think she believed me at first... to be fair this was in the West Midlands so definitely an unsual original "excuse" 😂

Hello! Same tornado sent part of someone's roof to squash my car. Work believed me because you could see the car in the background of a news report.

I think it’s a fair one though.

Imagine you’re the girlfriend, you’re absolutely in bits because your beloved pet of 10 years has died, and you’re sobbing… In the bf’s shoes I’d stay to cuddle with her as well.

I know which boyfriend I’d stay with and which one I’d probably break up with! You shouldn’t leave a person you live beside themselves crying their eyes out if you have choices.

I was once several hours late for work because my neighbour/ friend was extremely upset and crying in my kitchen. You don’t just go ‘cheerio now, gotta be at my desk at 8 sending important emails, hope you’ll work this out’.

Disclaimer, accept that in some jobs that are actually of major importance you can’t do that.

It's a good thing you don't work in the emergency services.

I know! My mum did and she didn’t have the option to spend time with me unless my leg was hanging off…

I’ve chosen an easy lifestyle that enables staying at home on purpose, when for years I wasn’t able to even call off work if somebody was dying.
