Broken radiator in spring....(not boiler!)

Her boyfriend had a cold...

Lightuptheroom · 03/04/2025 06:21

Had to ring in and state that we were locked in the house (which was actually true, the lock on the front door broke as we were trying to leave) boss was very sarcastic that people normally get locked out of their house!

Fraaances · 03/04/2025 06:22

@MyNameIsAlexDrake - Please tell me you work in a zoo! (You win, btw…)

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 03/04/2025 06:27

His dog was poorly, for three days in a row. Not needing the vet, not at death's door, just a bit off colour, for three solid days! 🙄

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 03/04/2025 00:06

This was actually mine. “ I was attacked by an iguana and in A&E having stitches and a tetanus”
I went into work after I was patched up though. Had to wear a hairband for about 6 months until my fringe grew back in!

Sorry I shouldn't laugh, but it just sounds like a funny excuse.

Of course it wasn't funny when it actually happened, and was a reason and not an excuse.

Never2many · 03/04/2025 06:34

I sincerely hope these employers took these excuses and told said pisstakers it would be annual leave and not sick leave?

There was a poster on another thread recently whose colleague called in sick when Michael Jackson died.

I worked with someone who was constantly sick. Couldn’t get to work because of the snow (she lived two streets away and plenty of people who lived much further managed it.) Had had a bad night’s sleep the night before, Had split up with her 10th love of her life this month. The reality is that if she’d ever actually been ill no-one would have believed her. When it came to redundancies she was first out the door.

Cathmawr · 03/04/2025 06:36

He was swimming in the river (it was a sunny day)

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 03/04/2025 06:38

Not off sick but I once had to call to say I d be late because my boa constrictor had mistaken my hand for her food (defrosted mouse) and sunk her teeth in.

It was a bit of time before she released it. I should have been more careful not to make a sudden movement near a hungry snake.

Was fine, drove in a bit later with puncture wounds. Boss said it was the most original excuse he d ever heard. Other colleagues who weren't reptile fans were like "ughhh not coming round your house" (haven't invited you anyway) and "omg isn't that poisonous? Go to hospital " (no boa constrictors are not venomous Susan and Roxanne is only 4ft)

XWKD · 03/04/2025 06:41

For showing up several hours late.

"It's my mother's birthday and she wanted attention."

Latenightreader · 03/04/2025 06:43

A colleague in my Saturday job called in sick when Take That broke up. I was 17, she was an adult (30s?) working full time! I think she was told she had to come in because I remember her crying in the locker room. Can't remember if it was the same colleague who was in dramatic pieces when Diana died a year or so later.

Littlemisschatterbox2 · 03/04/2025 06:49

Dog had chewed the lino and she had to go get a some more and then lay.

apparently this has to be done straight away

MayaPinion · 03/04/2025 07:03

I worked with a colleague who phoned in because she’d been landscaping her garden and uncovered an unexploded WW2 bomb. In fairness, when she phoned the police the bomb squad were called out, her street was cordoned off, and it made the local news, so we did believe her.

LBFseBrom · 03/04/2025 07:04

My sister's dog died.

My dad's cat died - when the colleague returned people had drawn pictures of a 'sleeping' cat with RIP above its bed, and put on his desk.

I couldn't wake up this morning.

MiserableMrsMopp · 03/04/2025 07:06

Had a colleague ring in sick because her cat was stuck on a roof (later actually fell of the roof). Given I'm a cat lover, I was really sympathetic, but most people at work weren't!

socks1107 · 03/04/2025 07:07

She ‘had to move the elders to higher ground’ after some bad rain. I line managed her and was speechless at that one ( regularly called in sick!)

piefacedClique · 03/04/2025 07:07

A young teacher with us many years ago phoned in and left a really pissed ranty message on the answerphone which was very insulting to a number of people. She then phoned in with a completely different reason for being off with no memory of the previous rude message she’d left. That one year initial contract stayed a one year contract!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/04/2025 07:07

Why would you call in sick and admit it's to wait in for a plumber to mend a radiator? That makes no sense. If you phone in sick you at least have to pretend you are sick. Confused

Treesarenotforeating · 03/04/2025 07:07

Friend of my H had had a stent/ bypass ( something) done only worked 3 days and scheduled all of his checkups/physio on his work days - worked for local authority

NotDarkGothicMama · 03/04/2025 07:08

Two weeks off work because their dog died 🙄I wouldn't have blinked at a day off to be very sad, then another day for a cremation, but two weeks is taking the mick.

An hour late because they'd managed to forget to put their trousers on and drove all the way to work before they realised. They phoned me from the car park and I told them to go home and come back when they were fully clothed.

GreenWheat · 03/04/2025 07:09

Her sister's cat had died!

You would not believe the brass neck on the some people. They genuinely think it's a valid reason.

romdowa · 03/04/2025 07:13

I once had to call in to my eveshift as a waitress because the bus back from uni had gotten lost and gone completely the wrong way. The bus driver was new , didn't know the route and wouldn't listen to the people on the bus when they told him he was going the wrong way. Took over 90 minutes to get home as we had to wait for the bus company to come out.

Zippityjumpingbean · 03/04/2025 07:13

We had a teacher once who didn’t turn up back after the summer holiday because she “wasn’t aware the summer had ended”

To be fair stuff like a loved pet dying can trigger a depressive episode in some people.

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2025 07:15

A colleague at my old office called in to say he wouldn’t be coming in because he had “sweaty legs.” Sort of became a legendary in-joke over the years, and I still say it to DP when I feel under the weather . Grin
