Broken radiator in spring....(not boiler!)

After a few weeks in a new role (contractor, and generally working 8 hours or more), and generally in at around 9.15-9.30, the person I worked for, an earlybird who always left by 5, asked if I could start at 8 or 8.30.

Replied that I'd go in early if needed for a specific occasion, but no, it wasn't convenient because I had to take my cat for a walk in the morning.

HonestScroller · 04/04/2025 17:55

Turned up to work at lunch time all in the space of a week... (1st and last week of work) we didn't keep them!

  1. didn't have a charger for phone so alarm didn't go off
  2. partner was in a fight the night before
  3. no excuse given
BagelandEggs · 04/04/2025 17:57

My friend temped in a government office where a woman was always going off ill. One time this woman had to go home because of dizziness after collating worksheets and another time she was allowed home with 'sore hair'!

MMUmum · 04/04/2025 17:57

'My dayghter's dyed my hair and it's gone pink' next day, 'she's try to dye it back and it's gone green' 😅😅

I had a colleague work with me for 11 days.

On day 12, she rang in sick saying she "couldn't move her arms".

No, I didn't understand it either.

I had this one. Someone one my team was off for 4 days because he'd thrown some chairs in a skip too vigourously and couldn't move his arms !

also had a colleague phone in sick with food poisoning and we'd been out together the night before and shared the same food 😂

I feel that I must confess taking two days off work after being bitten by a false widow spider on my leg.

When I told my boss she wasn’t entirely pleased and thought that it was a bit lame, so she asked for photos! She regretted it because they were really grim and she said they made her feel ill! I would add that my entire leg had also doubled in size!

I was in a lot of pain and when I saw my GP was immediately put on antibiotics! She didn’t mind me taking a couple of days leave!

Back when I was shift manager at a local convenience store a member of staff called up and said he couldn't come into work because his back door wouldn't lock from the outside. The conversation went something like this;
Me: Will it lock from the inside?
Him:.........Yes.
Me: Do you have a key for the front door?
Him: Yes?
Me: And does the lock on the front door work from the outside?
Him: yes
Me: Well go back inside your house lock the back door from the inside and leave by the front door instead. I'll see you at work shortly.

Not to mention he was also student living in a house share, and I found out once he got to work that there were other people still in the house so he didn't even need to lock the back door from the outside when he left.

A long time ago, 1997. A temp called in saying she could not come in to work on the Monday after Princess Diana died. She was too upset.

Nomunchmounjo · 04/04/2025 18:21

When I was a 6th former with a Saturday job at a supermarket I asked my brother to phone in sick for me one time I didn't fancy going in. He agreed and told them I had 'Black tongue fever'. So that taught me a lesson.

Another when I was teaching English abroad. I stayed over at a friend's apartment after a night out as I'd missed the last metro home. She forgot I was there, went to work and locked me in. On the 4th floor. I had to ring and tell them that. The apartment was just around the corner from the lesson and I remember saying, "I can see you, I just can't get to you." Not the most professional, but those were the days!

It's not that either. Who gets a pay cheque in the UK? It's not a thing.

It's an expression, though...

NapQueenRising · 04/04/2025 18:31

I worked with someone who was off sick for over a month... with a verruca on her pinkie toe. When she came back she was on crutches because it had been frozen off in a "major procedure". Not the whole toe, just the verucca. I think I would have mustered up sympathy for an actual amputation of the pinkie toe.

The crutches weren't NHS issue crutches either. They were a fantastic display of luminous pink, and had stickers avout being a warrior on them. She remained on them for several months after the major procedure requesting various incredible accommodations.

I didn’t go into work for 1 day as my 17 year old son was drunk and teary and I had to look after him. I have been lucky enough to not need a sick day in the 8 years I have worked there so I just told them the truth and that I wouldn’t be coming in. Literally no one said anything negative and they covered my work for me and checked he was ok. I do think that was perhaps a slightly ridiculous reason but sometimes there are more important things than work. Who knows that they recorded it on the system as because I doubt there is a category for looking after a drunk child.

GerryPix · 04/04/2025 18:37

I'd a colleague in a warehouse who phoned in claiming his washing machine wouldn't open and therefore he had no work clothes to come to work in.

Another claimed the coalman hadn't delivered his coal the previous day as normal, so he was waiting in for a delivery. Sounds fine until we realised he lived in a tower block 12 floors up

HappyandStrong · 04/04/2025 18:38

cadburyegg · 03/04/2025 09:52

Oh another time a different colleague left work early in a panic because her son was ill and had to be picked up from school. He was 16…

To be fair, when I was at school & sixth form, they wouldn't let you home if nobody was able to pick you up, even if you insisted you'd be fine: was a health & safety rule they had.

Nextdoor55 · 04/04/2025 18:41

I once lost my keys & couldn't get to work, eventually found them hanging on my coat arm, ridiculous. So embarrassing.

I wasn't sick, but had got my shift days wrong once. Lovely day off (so I thought!) and was having a coffee and chilling out/planning my day when my ward manager phoned me to ask what I was doing. Penny still hadn't dropped, so I told her my plans for the day. She told me I was down to work (I was mortified), and I think I was dressed and in work within 30minutes!! It was a genuine mistake (and I cut my break to make up for the lost time). Luckily she thought it was hilarious!

We're quite lucky at work, in that we don't have piss takers. We did have a bank HCA that would book shifts and then not turn up...or telephone an hour after shift starts to say that she couldn't come in for whatever reason, but other than that, it's pretty good.

I did that! I was enjoying what I thought was my final day of Annual Leave when the phone rang...yep, I was on the late shift. I knew as soon as the phone rang. Thing is, our lates start at 1pm and no-one noticed I wasn't there until 3pm! I rushed into work but I felt so awful about it that I was a nervous wreck. I was so upset, hyperventilating, feeling anxious and paranoid that people would think the worst of me, that after an hour the nurse in charge sent me home! 😆😆

Her favourite band had split up ((I kid you not)

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 03/04/2025 00:06

This was actually mine. “ I was attacked by an iguana and in A&E having stitches and a tetanus”
I went into work after I was patched up though. Had to wear a hairband for about 6 months until my fringe grew back in!

Sorry for the laughing emoji, but I laughed a lot!! HOW did that happen?

Hyperbowl · 04/04/2025 18:47

Allegedly took one sleeping pill and slept for three whole days without once waking up.

Too tired to sit in an office.

FormidableAnt · 04/04/2025 18:50

It's raining and my Wellingtons are in the attic. My boyfriend has gone to work and I'm afraid to go up the ladder.

CyanMaker · 04/04/2025 18:56

A teacher in the class next to mine couldn't come in because she needed a mental health day. She taught 4 year olds and it was those poor kids who needed a mental health day she was so anally strict with them they couldn't enjoy being kids.
