MikeWozniaksMohawk · 04/04/2025 22:15

It was snowy and his work shoes were slippery in the snow

edit to say he lived a 10 minute walk from the office

HermioneIsMyHomegirl · 04/04/2025 22:27

Had a temp once who didn't turn up for her first day at work, then was several hours late for her second day. Apparently she had sore fingers. Every time she hit the keyboard, she dramatically winced and went 'oooh, my fingers!' Then didn't turn up the next day. I terminated her contract there, and she turned up in tears to get her timesheet signed (was many years ago!), saying 'I would have done a really good job for you!'

Evidence was to the contrary.

I’ll reverse that one…🤣 I was the only one in my dept. who did manage to drive to work in heavy snow, and I live rurally. Does anyone remember winter 2010 when the TV weather maps showed the whole of the UK from North to South in a complete frozen ‘white out’?

I'll reverse it back: one snowy day a few winters ago we all made it into our office, except for the only one among us who drove a 4x4. He chose to WFH that day and was subjected to a pretty merciless pisstaking for it, although took it in good humour.

PluckyBamboo · 04/04/2025 22:41

Had a headache, again 🙄. That was the last straw and several of us headed out to her parents kebab shop 6 miles away to video her working in the shop....

Springee · 04/04/2025 22:42

So I've read page one and the last page and 70% plus are not ringing in sick so they would take a day of leave off you or you are ringing in asking for last minute leave. Snowed in isn't a sick day even if you are

motherofawhirlwind · 04/04/2025 22:58

Didn't want to risk slipping on "ice" whilst pushing her kid to nursery in a buggy.... It wasn't even frosty, as double confirmed by a colleague who lived a few doors down from her. Eventually sacked her.

I think this is fair because technically she needed the day off to get medical care

It really came within the realm of TMI. I think HR would have been perfectly happy if she said she had a headache.

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 05/04/2025 00:20

Their cat was sick on the bath mat.

GingersOwner26 · 05/04/2025 00:50

Broken foot because of dropping a heavy object on it, then being able to run on said broken foot faster than should have been medically possible.

Auburngal · 05/04/2025 06:39

Someone at my DM's last place of work. She (A) rang in sick as broke her arm and her arm in cast past elbow. A week later, another colleague (B) went on holiday to one of the Canary Islands. Sitting at the neighbouring restaurant - the colleague with the supposed broken arm. No cast, waving her arms in the air. B asked her DH to be in a photo with A in the background.

A rang in sick for things which weren't true in the past. She was sacked for this. Plus when she worked, she just whinged all the time.

Friend of my H had had a stent/ bypass ( something) done only worked 3 days and scheduled all of his checkups/physio on his work days - worked for local authority

TBF you don't usually have a choice when your appointments are

I go to the eye department for two conditions - visual and skin. Inherited the very rare skin condition from DF. See the same consultant. She does clinics 2-2.5 days a week and surgery the rest. Sometimes she has to emergency surgery such as if someone comes in with eyelid almost detached from a RTA etc.

Can't come in for a week as I'm stuck in Thailand and can't get to Bangkok as its Thai New Year and all the trains are booked. No absolutely can't get a single seat.

It was complete bollocks and my manager knew it. I had just changed my flight.

Luckily he couldn't prove it And I had been there a while so he didn't sack me. But he wasn't happy.

Gundogday · 05/04/2025 08:45

To be fair, I’ve been snowed in and couldn’t get into work. However, I wouldn't take it as a sick day, but book it off as holiday or unpaid leave (even though I do get anxiety about walking on icy pavements etc)

threenaancurrywhore · 05/04/2025 08:57

Tried to jump over a puddle and split her skirt. There was a pigeon in her flat. Same woman, different occasions.

Downsidesupside · 05/04/2025 08:58

Dh called in for me once- " Sorry boss, downside cant come in, she's in hospital as she's delivered the baby".

Ds2 came early and beat the start of my maternity leave.

SpencerTheRover · 05/04/2025 09:05

A company my husband worked for about 20 years ago, but this one was so good we still remember it:
A member of his department phoned in to say he was having a duvet day.

Broonzma · 05/04/2025 09:13

She’s had her clitoris pierced and can’t walk!

I had to walk in once due to snow, and no buses.. Took me two hours, but I got there. However, I did work in a hospital, so may have felt more needed than someone in an office.

sumayyah · 05/04/2025 11:39

I had to ring night before to say I wouldn't be in next day and someone would need to do opening shift because I've just given birth

I was 25 weeks pregnant and don't think she believed me as she asked me to take the phone to the nurses station where I was told off for leaving my room 🤦🏻‍♀️

My work was very understanding once they realised I was serious

A headache.

Not a migraine. A headache.

It's totally valid to call in sick with a headache. Migraines are not more painful headaches, they are an entirely different thing. If you have a brain haemorrhage you get an agonising headache, not a migraine (and can die as a result ). You can also have a migraine without a headache.

I expect you're of those people who thinks flu is a more serious cold.

I had a student once -a very ‘young’ 11 year old, who was sad that his cat had gone missing. He’d bring this up every so often so we all knew about it.
A few weeks later he bounded into class smiling from ear to ear - yes the cats come back!
Naturally we were all delighted at this happy ending he then went on to say how the cat is fine - a bit bigger and was more orange than black and white than he used to be but his mum had explained that stress can do that to a cat!
I managed to catch the eye of the 2 ‘mouthy’ girls sitting next to him and gave them ‘the look’ and to their and everyone’s credit nobody voiced any doubt!

Mum's a genius BUT I would've loved to have been there a few weeks later when the original Tiddles marched in as if nothing's happened 😂

Yes, son - when stressed, Cats REPLICATE!! 😆

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 05/04/2025 12:50

@JustSawJohnny I'm pretty sure original Tiddles was actually dead.
