I feel that I must confess taking two days off work after being bitten by a false widow spider on my leg.

When I told my boss she wasn’t entirely pleased and thought that it was a bit lame, so she asked for photos! She regretted it because they were really grim and she said they made her feel ill! I would add that my entire leg had also doubled in size!

I was in a lot of pain and when I saw my GP was immediately put on antibiotics! She didn’t mind me taking a couple of days leave!

I had this before Xmas. I got bit under my toes and my whole foot and leg swelled up. I ended up having cellulitis. Reacted to the first lot of antibiotics and got hives and was very sick and then had to have a second lot. I also had to go hospital every 48 hours to check on the cellulitis. I was off work for two weeks. Was a nightmare.

neighboursmustliveon · 04/04/2025 19:11

This was a trainee - it was windy so she couldn’t come in. We checked the area and there were no weather warnings. This was the same trainee who didn’t come in for a few days as her sisters husband was poorly so she went down to support her sister. He just had a cold 🙄

Bojoneedstogo · 04/04/2025 19:13

She had left Clinique clarifying tonic number 3 on for too long and had a burn in the middle of her forehead. Too embarrassed to see people.

JustMeAndTheFish · 04/04/2025 19:14

One of my younger employees phoned in to her Sunday shift to say she couldn’t get in as there was a fire down the street and she couldn’t get her car past the fire engine 😳

LlamaLondon · 04/04/2025 19:20

She’d taken so much cocaine the night before, her nose wouldn’t stop bleeding (we worked in TV, for clichéd context)…

She was snowed in. When told that a colleague who lived on the same street was already at work, she magically made it in.

I’ll reverse that one…🤣 I was the only one in my dept. who did manage to drive to work in heavy snow, and I live rurally. Does anyone remember winter 2010 when the TV weather maps showed the whole of the UK from North to South in a complete frozen ‘white out’?

Tbf, if a rabbit has overgrown teeth, it can be very serious, and will usually require urgent treatment.

Edited

Did they grow 2 inches suddenly overnight?

Dont think so. Think it could be planned at weekends or annual leave.

but in this day of hybrid flexible working you have to make up the time don’t you?

Grandpa died for the 5th time

They might have more than 1 grandpa... I had 5 and all have now died.

Bio Fathers birth dad
Bio Fathers step dad (who was heavily in my life as I was close to my nana)
Mothers dad
My step Dads dad (who was heavily in my life, I use to help care for him)
plus was lucky enough to have my great grandad in my life until I was 20 (and saw him every week).

I have photos somewhere of that year, I opened the back door to over 5 foot of snow (granted it wasn't 5 foot deep everywhere but it had caused a snow drift across my house blocking us in).

Someone called off at my previous place of work because they'd had a bad dream 🤣

I’ve done this before 😂

It's an expression, though...

I've rarely heard that said, and I'm 58. Wage slip, pay slip, yes. Pay cheque? Nah...

Plutotheplanet · 04/04/2025 19:45

@MinnieMountain She was snowed in.

In this situation, I think it's right that people make there own risk assessment. Conditions one person might be comfortable driving in, another might not. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable pressurising an employee to driving in snow, if they had an accident it would be on you. Also a factor is what car they are driving, some are just better in snow than others.

I once attempted to get to work when it had snowed. Both routes to get out my street were up hill. I tried to drive up my road, but my car just couldn't seem to get enough grip and the wheels just span. So tried to go down my road and up the hill of a parallel road and the same problem. I then tried to get back up my road, but I couldn't even get onto the road. I ended up having to park it on the down hill road and walk back to my house. My line manager didn't believe I couldn't get in has he had travelled much further from the office. Fortunately a colleague in the neighbouring town to me couldn't get in either. He gave us both a hard time over it though.

I work in HR. Relative new starter (still in probation) called in sick because they’d had a nightmare overnight and were tired

JLou08 · 04/04/2025 19:57

Someone came in towards the end of a shift, said they'd just woke up in a phone box and couldn't remember how they got there.

Ethelflaedofmercia · 04/04/2025 20:03

This isn’t about calling sick but leaving work through illness.

I worked in hospitality and during an incredibly busy late shift, my supervisor at the time, had what we thought was a “heart attack”

Ambulance was called and he was wheeled out and rushed to hospital. I had to do the remainder of the shift alone. Later on I seen him on Snapchat dancing away. He had faked it and gone partying.

He always was a scum bag. He quit before he was sacked.

Fine, as long as you don't expect to be paid for it.

Me, I couldn't find my keys so was locked in the house! Did eventually but was about 10 mins late. Xx

I remember an International student at my uni calling Top Man to say they couldn't come in as it was snowing and hence it was 'too treacherous' to go outside. The snow wasn't even settling but he was completely weirded out by it as he'd never seen snow before, bless him.

Recently a manager cancelled all meetings for a day because his DD's hamster had died so he needed to go around all of the local pet stores and find one that looked the same.

I had a student once -a very ‘young’ 11 year old, who was sad that his cat had gone missing. He’d bring this up every so often so we all knew about it.
A few weeks later he bounded into class smiling from ear to ear - yes the cats come back!
Naturally we were all delighted at this happy ending he then went on to say how the cat is fine - a bit bigger and was more orange than black and white than he used to be but his mum had explained that stress can do that to a cat!
I managed to catch the eye of the 2 ‘mouthy’ girls sitting next to him and gave them ‘the look’ and to their and everyone’s credit nobody voiced any doubt!

It’s dreadful isn’t it! But calling in sick to go to see a GP for a spider bite in England seems made up! If I lived somewhere tropical it wouldn’t have been so strange I guess, which is why I think my manager asked for a photo!

Many people don’t realise how invasive false widow spiders have become and how painful and damaging their bites are!

Noodlesandpoodles · 04/04/2025 20:59

I don’t care how pathetic it sounds but I will not attempt to get to work when it’s snowy or icy, I don’t care if Gary managed to get in from 3 towns away, I’m not doing it! I learned my lesson during the Beast from the East…

I was looking out my window watching all kinds of vehicles struggle to get up the hill. They were all slipping and sliding, crashing into parked cars, mounting the kerbs etc. I knew I’d get a bollocking from work if I didn’t at least try to get in so I thought I’d try to walk to a bus stop on the main road (route to a hospital so always gritted and snow ploughed to the side of the road).
Well, it’s a downhill walk to get the bus stop so in my head I thought “it’s fine if I slip, I can just shuffle down on my bum!”
Wrong. Oh so wrong. I barely made it off my driveway. I slipped on ice, somehow managed to get myself up, and then collapsed in pain against a lamppost.
I’d broken my ankle & collar bone! The result was 1 week in hospital, 2 surgeries, and a total of 16 weeks off work 😅

All that drama because I scared to have ONE day off 🙄

Cabinqueen · 04/04/2025 21:01

A former colleague who had form for random excuses called in sick (again) with picture of her face with red marks on her cheek... Turns out she had purposely burnt herself on the steam coming from the kettle...

The lengths as some people are willing to go to...🤷🏼

LyndaSnellsSniff · 04/04/2025 21:07

"I've had a very tiring week and I need to rest." Fully grown woman only worked on Saturdays. She was always unreliable and flaky.

However, in hindsight, I now wonder if her husband dictated when she could and couldn't work. 🥺

Onlygirlinmyhouse1 · 04/04/2025 22:11

We had a manager who worked nights called in cause his dog had her period!

BobbySox71 · 04/04/2025 22:14

Me being 2 hours late for work
My horse escaped into neighbouring farm and I could find how he did it for ages, the I had to walk through the fields in the dark and fell into the stream and mud. Then I had to go home to get cleaned up.
luckily my colleagues and line manager found this hilarious and definitely believed me as I’m normally so reliable. 2 years on they still bring it up 🤣
