Shit holiday

WorkingMum1391 · 02/04/2025 10:51

Just want a moan really.
Arrived yesterday to thunderstorms and down pour which looks like it will continue on the rest of the week.
With DH, 8 year old SS and 1 year old DD. I'm sitting in the room in darkness and silence while she has a nap while DH and SS are going between indoor pool and arcade.

Just boring and crap so far.

How do I make it better if the weather doesn't improve? Wine?

Well if it was nice weather and you are insisting the baby naps in the dark inside I can’t see how the holiday would be any better!! You need to get out and let the baby sleep in the buggy or in a baby carrier or something ! Get some rain jackets or ponchos and go out!!

we we’re in Thailand in rainy season and we still swam in the rain and played on the beach ! I read books, listened to podcasts while the baby slept on my lap or in the buggy

we took turns having days to ourselves.

a bit of bad is something you have to just suck up and make the best of the situation

CountryQueen · 02/04/2025 17:41

Just here to know where @curious79is. No way can it be NYC. So much to see and do!

rosydreams · 02/04/2025 17:41

We're in Antalya. Been here a few times and always been blistering heat so really didn't expect our home town to be warmer this week!

Take it in turns to go to the Turkish Bath?

Miyagi99 · 02/04/2025 17:44

Get some waterproofs and go out!

It was still warm though, wasn’t it? So hardly the same thing.

Am I the only one who did a quick search of PP’s posting history?! It’s somewhere in the US… so I concluded it was New York.

If they are bored in New York or any other American city that’s crazy! Half the fun is people watching & eavesdropping on conversations.
Not to mention soaking up the sights and sounds of the streets.

In NY Walk the high line, go up one of the multiple amazing viewing towers, visit the UN, the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, stroll in Central Park, see a US sports game or a show. The problem is fitting it all in not it being boring!

Haha you’re preaching to the converted - I moved here it’s so brilliant!

I think perhaps PP is a bit disappointed with the weather. It has been schizophrenic lately: 9 degrees and sunny today, 23 degrees and cloudy tomorrow. We’re all waiting for consistently fantastic spring weather 😩

Last time I was there I’ve never seen so many seriously unhinged people walking the streets. And police men with machine guns outside some ordinary clothes stores.

crackofdoom · 02/04/2025 17:58

Easter's gonna Easter in the Mediterranean I'm afraid 🤷‍♀️

(memories of a solo "hiking trip" on the Cote d'Azur on a torrential day where I found some slightly boring activities instead and went shopping at Monoprix, and by the time I got back to my AirBnB my Converse were soaked through and my paper Monoprix bag had dissolved and I had to carry my groceries awkwardly in my arms.

Also Genova with the kids when we had a lovely day visiting Portofino planned but it hammered it down so we went to the Maritime museum, and the next morning the surrounding mountains had snow on them. Then we went to the beach and basked in 22 degree sunshine 😆).

The OP is in Turkey. Where there have been protests about the President, and glad OP has not been affected by them.

If the reputation of some Turkish men as being sleazy is true, then at least the rain will have kept them away.

jackspratswife01 · 02/04/2025 18:09

Really did not like Antalya in rain or sunshine ☀️

Er...no it's not. It's sunny but really quite cold here in Yorkshire. Still got my hat and gloves on.

Luxury.
We used to dream of gloves.
26 of us lived in a macrame handbag by the cow and calf on Ilkley moor...

Yes, all of this and the museums, the shops, the restaurants, the boat trip around the island of Manhattan, the tour buses - one for uptown, one for downtown, Ground Zero, the Rockefeller Center, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge for lunch or dinner at the River Cafe, walk around SoHo, Greenwich Village, Tribeca and so much more …

TheChosenTwo · 02/04/2025 18:15

It is wall to wall sunshine here in the se but Jesus Christ the wind is ruining everything and I hate it. Feel like we’ve waited so long for blue skies only to have it sullied by the continuation of frosty wind 🤬

Sympathies @WorkingMum1391 we’ve been there! Booked the Maldives for a big birthday and the monsoon hit two months late and it was torrential rain. DC were bored, no flights home and I guess because it was something we had saved up for for years there were such high expectations!

It will get better- there will be excursions you can do and I would absolutely check out the kids club for both kids- even if you stay with them it’s a change of scenery.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the weather improves for you.

Oh no! That is my worst nightmare with the Maldives. The kids are desperate for me to book a holiday there but I’ve heard so many horror stories of arriving and having a week of torrential rain and winds that I can’t risk the huge financial outlay. From what I’ve read it can be quite difficult to predict the weather there in recent years.

To those saying it’s just a bit of rain and to get on with it, it’s not that simple.

Sun holiday resorts don’t usually have much in the way of indoor activities, you probably haven’t brought the rain cover for the buggy let alone any other warm or wet weather clothing.

VWT5 · 02/04/2025 18:19

There’s the aquarium in Antalya (indoors) and a couple of undercover modern shopping centres, tram rides too…

Almost always a warm indoor pool and sauna/Turkish bath to enjoy.

feelingalittlehorse · 02/04/2025 18:19

OP, I have no advice but YANBU.

I had a week in the Canaries, where apparently it was “guaranteed sunshine pretty much all year round”. Well let me tell you. It hammered it down. All week. Wettest week they’d had on record. Being from the North of England, funnily enough, rain was something I was trying to avoid….

That was about a decade ago now, and I’m still very bitter and cannot even hear the same of the Island without simmering. 😡

Hazel665 · 02/04/2025 18:19

Wet weather is par for the course in south western Turkey in early April. Get the tram out to the zoo? Hire a car and head out to Dudem waterfalls? Hire a car and head to the amphitheatre at Aspendos? Or negotiate a fixed price with a driver if you don't want to drive. Visit the amazing museum at Antalya? Head for the Luna Park and see if any rides are open? Go to the Antalya aquarium? Go shell hunting on Konyaalti or Lara beach, depending on which is closest to you? Ask staff at the hotel when the market is on, and then go? Land of Legends is popular with locals I hear.

Snapncrackle · 02/04/2025 18:25

i knew you were going to say Antalya😂 friends of mine are there and said it’s been raining horribly

Bogginsthe3rd · 02/04/2025 18:28

Such a shame. It's beautiful weather all week in the UK currently. Went to an open air pool today ! I would try and get out whatever the weather. Can you hire a car and see some sights ?

WorkingMum1391 · 02/04/2025 18:30

Lots of people suggest hiring a car. How do you manage to do this with no car seat for the baby?
I'm not too comfortable with just sitting them on my lap

AnotherBritInTheUSA · 02/04/2025 18:36

Can the car rental place lend you one, OP?

Most car rental companies will have them and you can hire them also with the car. I don't remember being charged extra for that but I could be wrong.

Yes, ask the car rental place to give you one.
