Just want a moan really.
Arrived yesterday to thunderstorms and down pour which looks like it will continue on the rest of the week.
With DH, 8 year old SS and 1 year old DD. I'm sitting in the room in darkness and silence while she has a nap while DH and SS are going between indoor pool and arcade.

Just boring and crap so far.

How do I make it better if the weather doesn't improve? Wine?

OP posts:
AdoraBell · 02/04/2025 14:05

Ah, that is crap. Hope the weather improves soon.

Obviously Coventry.

At least Coventry has lots of indoor stuff to do with kids in the rain...

Hwi · 02/04/2025 14:09

Just enjoy it - you are all together, the whole family - not many in the UK can afford it these days - you don't have to cook, go to school, shop, clean! You can teach your kids all you want, you can have long conversations with your dh and dc, you can really bond! Without the stupid TV, digital devices and Netflix! And swim! You can swim in that pool, you can actually live in that pool having all those conversations with your family!

Oh no - Turkey has proper seasons so is typically rainy this time of the year. Go into Antalya old town or Side. Both lovely towns with lots to see. Hope the weather improves, I always think rain on holiday is better than rain in the uk but maybe not 😂

ilovesushi · 02/04/2025 14:17

Op is not unreasonable but the poster who is bored in the most vibrant city in the world is very very unreasonable.

Big IKEA !

Admittedly Antalya is not the best place to be with bad weather as weather is it's main redeeming feature.

I would look up the best rated restaurants and eat in a different one every day. Visit all the museums, churches / mosques you can.
I love taking my little ones to museums, they enjoy it far more than you'd expect.

I'd also definitely try the aquarium as that should be spot on for both an 8 year old and 1 year old - and so relaxing for adults too.

One of the reasons we have always booked two weeks. You can hope that at least one of them will have some decent weather!! (but get that not everyone is able to do this due to £ or time off) And another reason we have always booked a private villa with a pool.

We always went to the Canary Islands with our girls when they were young. Mostly great weather although one year we did have some rain on a couple of the days. We took the opportunity to go out and explore the area, find some attractions indoors to go to and on one of the days, when we got back, we still went in the pool with the kids. It was actually really fun and we laughed a lot and we always remember that holiday where we swam and played in the pool in the rain.

As we had our own Villa there was always the TV and always a selection of books and games so we would also play board games for a while.

It is crap when the weather is shite but sometimes you have to just suck it up and make your own fun. In the evening if there was a little rain we would stay and cook at the Villa and DH and I would open a bottle of wine. That always helps!

Think outside the box and try and just enjoy the fact that you are still on holiday and rest, relax and enjoy the food and drink at least.

Hope it perks up!

I'm guessing Rome or Paris. Maybe New York.

I thought somewhere like Rome.
There is so much to see and do in New York no one could possibly be bored, unless you don’t enjoy walking and sightseeing, in which case wrong place to book 😆

RampantIvy · 02/04/2025 14:33

How can anyone be bored in a vibrant city?
Is there no sightseeing?

Any ‘vibrant city’ will have galleries, museums, cinemas, restaurants and shops. I can only assume the holidaymakers don’t enjoy each other’s company.

Crazybaby123 · 02/04/2025 14:52

Research all the indoor things to do in rhe area. Potentially hire a car and fo futher afield.
Ss can do go karting and things with dad, you could go on some museum visits with baby. You might have to split up for things then have nice dinners together.
Cinema and cafes that have board games and play sesions.
Find local mother and baby events and activities for you and things like indoor rock climbing for the boy.
Visit the malls, churches, theme cafes and search for things like family activities for making local food.

Sometimes you just don't click with a place. DH and I left Oxford a day early as we found it really dull & we couldn't wait to move on to somewhere more interesting. Apparently house prices are nuts as people are queueing up to live there - lord knows why?

Shegotanology · 02/04/2025 15:06

@Baninarama Oxford has my favorite museum, Pitt Rivers. I could spend a good few days just in there.

Wishimaywishimight · 02/04/2025 15:33

@Baninarama @Shegotanology I was in Oxford this time last year and DH and I absolutely loved it! Did an amazing (Inspector Morse / Lewis based) walking tour with a fabulous guide. Visited several museums (can't remember the names), walked in the grounds of several colleges, attended some sort of (evensong??) event in a college which was beautiful, very atmospheric. Had drinks in the 'Morse' bar in the Randolph. Stayed in the Malmaison which is a former prison - very cool.

Just goes to show how tastes differ!

Ophy83 · 02/04/2025 15:45

Definitely get out and about! Go to the markets and try turkish delight and baklava. If there's a downpour then the aquarium will be good, even babies love those. If the weather lets up then go see the waterfalls

Big IKEA !

You're several years out of date! It never reopened after lockdown. It had been due to close anyway but they just moved the date.

No! I’m gutted- it was my kids favourite- it’ll be Notts or Wendsbury now then

Shambles123 · 02/04/2025 16:12

Malaga last Easter was like this for us. Also had a 10 hour delay on the way home (although the Easyjet comp covered the Airbnb cost we spent so swings and roundabouts...).
Staying at home this Easter hols!
Good food, wine, getting out when not raining is my only advice. Hope the weather improves for you.

lucywho123 · 02/04/2025 16:13

This happened to us a couple of years ago OP - although it was only a couple of days in Lanzarote. We decided to brave it and still took DD to the kids pool, figured we'd get wet anyway and just embraced it (did you pack her a head to toe swimsuit so she'll be warm at least)

Alternatively, a lot of the big Turkish resorts have a spa - some with a mini indoor pool etc, could you spend a few hours there with the little one? Or go and have some treatments and leave DH to entertain SS and DD?

Read, swim, try to take some interesting photos, go for a walk in the rain, have a Turkish massage, draw or paint something, find someone to chat to, learn some of the language, watch a film, write a poem or story, travel on local transport... Think of it as a challenge rather than focusing on what you can't do.

Dude did you miss the part where she has an 8yo and 1yo with her? What are they supposed to do with the kids whilst they’re off swimming and reading and relaxing? 😂🤦‍♀️

Livingbytheocean · 02/04/2025 16:23

A spa afternoon and leave dh with all the dc - cocktail to follow and a warm soak on repeat every day 😁

Livingbytheocean · 02/04/2025 16:24

Seriously can you just come home? Wall to wall sunshine and 20c at home for the next two days

Sassybooklover · 02/04/2025 16:24

Turkey isn't usually overly warm during this time of the year. Most of the Mediterranean isn't either, you need to go to the Canary Islands or Cyprus if you want warmth and sunshine. Unfortunately, it's a case of making the best of it...look at places to visit.
