In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

If you really like the shoes and you can afford them, it’s really not a waste of money. You’re allowed to have nice things! DH and I spent £20k on a cutlery set when we were young, pre-kids and had money. That’s arguably a ridiculous amount of money to spend on knives & forks, but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

Are they made of diamond? 🤯

Toddlerteaplease · 30/03/2025 22:46

I brought a pillow that cost £80. I slept on it for three nights. Then put it back in the original packaging and returned it. It was ok. But I couldn’t justify the expense for something that was nothing special.

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 22:46

Honestly this is one of those times you ask for 'make me feel better' help with low expectations and got a huge gift over and over wrapped with a big bow.

Thank you everyone who is worse than me. You have helped.

This thread is making me feel better about just having spent £500 on a digital piano I'll probably get bored of after a couple of months.

Spent £5k on a horse. Managed to sit on her twice, spent £630 on a saddle, then discovered she’s pregnant.

I’m now spending £520 a month to keep an upduffed cob on what is essentially an all- inclusive holiday, with no chance of riding her on the horizon.

She’s the best money I’ve ever spent 🥰

Look on it as two horses for the price of one! 😍

@edwinbear

We couldn’t afford the canteen as well! They are individually wrapped up in tissue and kept in the (free) velvet roll we got with them.
OP - can we see your lovely shoes! 🙏

It's actually hilarious that you spent that on cutlery but couldn't afford the canteen. I think if it was 20 years ago, for your next anniversary one or other of you should buy a canteen as a present to the other.

Emboldened by you all here are the shoes. I know they will not be everyone's cup of tea but I like them and I am traumatised by the price so please don't be too mean. I'm only posting it because @edwinbear who I'm grateful to asked. I know it is a stupid amount of money. I know.

Gorgeous and also wearable in a way that the classic heals would not be. Hope you enjoy them and wear them loads!

Yes…except for the vet bills…stable cam…extra livery costs…🫣

I veer between 'fuck it who knows how long you have left' but also worrying how I can fund years of old age/retirement.
So I end up with a foot in both camps and making a variety of incompatible financial decisions. One minute I'm upping my ISA contribution and the next buying a far too expensive handbag.

This is me 100%. The shoes are my version of your expensive handbag. Then I feel ill and worry about my care costs and pension.

Just promise yourself you will wear them and love them. Don't save them for 'best' or never wear them because you feel guilty.

I think I will need to sleep in them to get £ per wear value.

At least yours are sensible enough to wear on the daily! Each of mine are at least 4 inches high!

It's a great thread that I think has made loads of us feel better. Next time I impulse buy perfume or whatever else I'll be thinking this is fine, it could be 20k of cutlery. I may even utter those words to DH just to watch his bemusement.

One of my friends has form for buying horses drunk. Another went to buy one and can back with 2. Another only nought one but came back with a carousel horse head in the trailer as well.

it’s a horse girl thing.

More than one buys them all the same colour in the hope that disinterested DP/Hs don’t realise there is a new one in the field. One has 2 almost identical black ones. One is a bit bigger.

Thinking about my spending actually my other huge frivolity is a very small elderly dog who had significant health problems that I adopted at the age of 15… he’s one of the loves of my life and I take excellent care of him; everyone thought he would come home to die basically he was in such a poor state.. We are now several years on from his adoption and he is very much still going, stable and enjoying himself a little bit in life - I have spent thousands on his vets bills this last two years- we can afford it so it’s not a daft expense and of course makes a huge difference to him. My DH hasn’t ever asked me how much he actually costs us because he knows it’s a ridiculous amount 😂 Everyone constantly tells me I’m insane for adopting him and continuing any expensive treatment required at his age but honestly this tiny ancient dog is the most resilient thing I’ve ever seen, and he still has a good quality of life thanks to my investments in him both money at the vets & daily care. And he has taught me so much about unconditional love! For me it’s very worth it. I won’t keep him going when I know it’s his time and he can’t go on. Keep the shoes. Love this thread x

Matildahoney · 30/03/2025 22:52

@OvaHere I bought my most expensive handbag when I was pregnant, it cost the same as I part exchanged my car for to buy a more sensible one!!

Obscenely priced but gorgeous sofa with down lined pillows. It was heaven to snuggle into with a book. But because they were down lined they need to be plumped regularly, and I am the only one in the house that will bother to plump the pillows. I now resentfully observe the squashed sofa from a distance - it has come to represent all the unappreciated menial responsibilities that everyone but me is blissfully oblivious to.

I have one of those. Glorious but always looks squashed. Luckily for me partner is obsessive cushion plumper.

Don't beat yourself up look at all these men having mid wife crisis buying sports car and weekends away with their mistress you are small time spender compared with it. You deserve a treat - wear and enjoy them!

Absolutely this! My ex was paying London rent for at least one sex worker. I have no idea how much his involvement with sex workers cost him but I’m going to guess somewhere in the region of £20-40k. Possibly quite a lot more, who knows.

Enjoy your shoes and don’t feel guilty, OP 😊

"Never mind. It could be £20k cutlery" is the new MN inspirational mantra for the guilt ridden shopper.

This thread has some wonderful stories. I'd love some fancy cutlery. It's nice to treat yourself. If you enjoy the experience/item then I don't think the money went to waste. I have some beautiful bags and shoes that I had to save for but I don't regret it. I use them often and with care. They bring me joy.

I did panic buy a dress though that makes me sad. In a designer closing down sale where there was no chance to try it on. The rack I got it from was for my size but the dress was a size down. I realised in the line to pay but there were none left when I tried to swap for the size up. When I tried it on at home it was really tiny at the waist, the zip wouldn't come close to doing up. And then taking it off it I got stuck and ripped it! I spent about £500 on a dress no one will ever wear! It's very pretty but what a waste. I wish I'd never bothered.

@Hysterectomynext 👋(waves her size 4's at you.😆) I know just how you feel!

AmiablePedant · 30/03/2025 22:54

I like clothes but don't necessarily buy wildly expensive ones . . . but 25 years ago I spent more than I'd ever spent on a single garment in my life for a designer coat that was marked down in the post Christmas sales but was still, well, wildly expensive. One of those garments that transcend fashion, never in, never out, just looks great. Retro . . . sort of Dior New Look, falling between calf and ankle, gorgeous black refined Italian wool, the lining exquisitely sewn in, quite fitted around the bust, a marked waist, and gorgeous flare below the waist that moved with one (and skimmed over bulges very nicely thank you). Little velvet collar. However scruffy the clothes beneath, one looked great in the cold winter days. I no longer, alas, can really fit into it, but perhaps I should get it out, try to put it on, and swear to lose those 20 pounds!

Last year I bought:

  • a lumea. I have pale hair on white skin. Not sure what possessed me.
  • a bear. Used a few times and I think I can see a difference but I don't like using it.
  • an electric pelvic floor exerciser. I'm not sure I use the right muscles when using it plus it's a faff to charge.
  • a soup maker. Waste of money and a faff to wash.
  • a Dyson hairdryer. Something half the price would have been just as good.

I have no idea what you paid for the bear but it was totally worth it.

A beautiful silk dress for a formal ball. It’s gorgeous and I’ve worn it once in the 15 years since I bought it. I definitely couldn’t afford it at the time and lived on noodles and beans on toast for months. I love it and felt amazing in it (still have the photos even if I can’t get u to it these days). I feel so guilty every time I look at it though as it’s been sat in a garment bag for far too long.
Currently trying to sell it as a prom dress in the hope I might be redeemed by a teenager getting their dream dress for £20.

Edited

Show us! I’m in the market for a silk prom dress!!

Isn't there a 'Jill pony book' (by Ruby Ferguson) where she goes to buy a horse and feels she has to buy a poor, neglected pony she sees at the same sale? (I devoured those books as a young horse girl)...

(Don't think Jill was drunk though...).

I understand this too. I haven't had a recent bereavement but my mother died somewhat prematurely from cancer but my father is going strong into his 80s.

Now I've hit proper middle age (nearly 50) I veer between 'fuck it who knows how long you have left' but also worrying how I can fund years of old age/retirement.

So I end up with a foot in both camps and making a variety of incompatible financial decisions. One minute I'm upping my ISA contribution and the next buying a far too expensive handbag.

Oh I totally get this, my DH had a near fatal accident last night and it feels like a never ending justification now of life is too short not to try and enjoy it
