In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

I thought you were being a tad casual!!

🤣

How is your DH doing now?

Doing much better but still a way to go! We are booking holidays like they are going out of fashion on the basis you need to squeeze every drop of fun out of life whilst you can!

I said people are different and I respect that. I still personally find it completely ridiculous. Especially when there is so much suffering in the world.

Yes and all of the suffering in the world would end immediately if folk stopped buying expensive cutlery.

If I had 20k to burn on cutlery, I wouldn’t, I’d donate it somewhere where it was needed, instead of wasting it: that’s all I meant.

AskAlisonTi · 31/03/2025 20:12

Some v amusing stories on here 😁

Seems some “mad” and expensive purchases turn out to be worthwhile, some not so much.

LalaPaloosa2024 · 31/03/2025 20:19

I spent £2,600 on Taylor Swift tickets. Worth it just for how happy it made my daughter.

I do have blue and white ceramics I don't use but I like looking at. £200 plates! Ditto shoes as I now wear sketchers.
My painting I mentioned up thread is a copy of a Titian. The face of the lady glows like an angel.

Well I think it's amazing that you have never and will never buy anything that you don't need. That you never go on holiday or buy new clothes. That you don't buy make up or get haircuts. That you sleep on a mattress on the floor. Unless you give ALL of your superfluous cash to charity then I don't really think you have a leg to stand on. You also don't know that the cutlery splurgers haven't also donated twice as much to charity already. Or would that still not be enough. No one is allowed anything nice?

GiraffeCup · 31/03/2025 20:38

Katem90 · 31/03/2025 20:24

Pardon?

Presumably you give every spare penny you have to charity and are never frivolous with your money ever.

FishPie2 · 31/03/2025 20:38

This thread has made me feel so much better. I am recently bereaved and have bought in the last few weeks (no idea why) a Nintendo Switch which I thought I would pass the time but have no idea how to use it but the man in the shop said it was easy, maybe for a 6 year old. A walking machine, used it twice in 4 weeks.
Expensive watch which I do like and 2 pairs of shoes costing far more than I usually spend plus a river cruise and a couple of long weekends away.
Nothing to do with my late husband not spending money just me wanting to spend it. It's weird.
I have had and given away Le Creuset pan sets (2) and Denby pottery which I used to collect but have no interest in now and would have bought the cutlery if I liked it.

FagsMagsandBags · 31/03/2025 03:07

I'd like a big old ginger Maine Coon.

£1000 on my ginger boy was 50% of the best money I ever spent…his sister accounting for the other 50%

They are an ongoing expense compared to previous moggie though so not a recommended impulsive purchase if you might subsequently struggle with keeping them in fancy cat food and exorbitant insurance

DeffoNeedANameChange · 31/03/2025 20:47

At least the shoes were a one off cost. Unlike my broken pony who's going to cost me the same as a fully working pony for probably another 10+ years....😬

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2025 20:49

At least the cutlery can be handed down through the generations and used and will keep their value ( I think cutlery keeps its value ?)
Dh likes a modest holiday once a year, but he always thinks it’s a waste of money. I can see his point of view really , at least spending thousands on things like pets or a lovely chair or whatever you can see every day and not just a few old photos you can’t even show people that well anymore because they are all stored on a phone or a gadget.

Hoppinggreen · 31/03/2025 20:53

I bought a Kate Spade dress for around £500 last year and wore it once during a holiday. I was at a fancy restaurant, went to the loo, saw myself in the mirror and thought I looked shit in it. I had it on for around 3 hours in total
I should put it on Vinted or something

@edwinbear

We couldn’t afford the canteen as well! They are individually wrapped up in tissue and kept in the (free) velvet roll we got with them.
OP - can we see your lovely shoes! 🙏

It's actually hilarious that you spent that on cutlery but couldn't afford the canteen. I think if it was 20 years ago, for your next anniversary one or other of you should buy a canteen as a present to the other.

Emboldened by you all here are the shoes. I know they will not be everyone's cup of tea but I like them and I am traumatised by the price so please don't be too mean. I'm only posting it because @edwinbear who I'm grateful to asked. I know it is a stupid amount of money. I know.

These are STUNNING. I think I’d have been very tempted too. So unusual! I truly hope you enjoy wearing them. They are gorgeous.

(My spend confession: £400 on a gong and, erm, another £495 on a crystal singing bowl. In my defence I do wee sound healing videos to share and I find it relaxing to play and listen and share with others who enjoy it. But the bowl does terrify me a little every time I lift it out of its case…)

Pennyswimsplash · 31/03/2025 21:03

My daughters prom dress & all the added extras - one night cost me 5k….. I couldn’t really afford it but she’s worth it 😜

deste · 31/03/2025 21:05

£400 on Dubarry boots, i have difficulty getting them on and off and they arn’t all that comfortable. I have worn them 4 times.

A oil painting I had shipped from Amsterdam. It's not been up on the wall for 16 years.
It's is insured for £20k and if not a copy about £1m. I'm too scared to get it appraised because I couldn't keep it if it's the real deal. It's covered with an old bit of carpet!

I couldn’t bear the not knowing!

Thefsm · 31/03/2025 21:16

I just bought myself a meteorite and amethyst necklace at the Smithsonian museum. I feel very good about it though as the shop is always my favourite part of the trip to museums and I never got a glass cabinet item before. It feels heavy and I feel powerful and strong wearing it. It was $125 and worth it. I’ve had a terrible few years so it represents my new found strength.

Have a biscuit. And a banana. And a gold medal.

Unless of course like most of us if you actually had £20k in your sticky fists I am sure there would be things you’d “need” that would take priority. Much easier to give away money you haven’t got

I'm pleased to hear he's doing well, rehab is much more effective when you're on holiday somewhere warm😊

LillyPJ · 31/03/2025 21:32

peachgreen · 31/03/2025 19:31

Another way of looking at the £20k cutlery is to think… if you had £20k and you didn’t need to spend it on something sensible / didn’t want to spend it on an experience like a holiday for whatever reason… what WOULD you spend it on? Because I would spend £20k on a really good quality capsule wardrobe in a heartbeat.

How about helping out someone else who maybe doesn't have food, let alone posh cutlery? Or anyone else in need? Or donating to a charity?

worldwidetravel2017 · 31/03/2025 21:33
