In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

I spent £450 on a parrot and it flew away 4 days later🙃
(obviously an accent involving a broken door handle)
don’t beat yourself up we only live once and we live and we learn everyday 💛

What's done is done. So I hope you get pleasure out of wearing them every day.

I indulge in expensive, unique jewellery. Not often, but when I do i have no problem spending exorbitant amounts if it's something I love. I have pieces that are 30 years old & I still love them/get pleasure out of wearing them.

Enjoy finer things, you only live once.

I've never understood that stereotypical thing you see in movies where poor people are pocketing the silver knives and forks in fancy houses. I've always thought "what's the point, how much can they really be worth? And who would you sell them to?" I guess I was wrong and the right set are worth it 😄

I bought that lumea hair laser zapper thing for about £500 and have never really used it. That one bothers me.

Ooohhh...i have one of those bit I do use it weekly and love it!

After @edwinbear s post about the cutlery, I googled silver cutlery to look at prices. It lead me to this on the Asprey site - if you would like to "Enhance your dining experience with Asprey's Bobsleigh Salt and Pepper Shaker set" (which is admittedly very cute) you can do that for ... guess how much?

. . . . .

yes

£7,950.

Doing up house and needed a new sofa. Saw one in a furniture store dh and I liked to browse. I was with my dm and sofa and 2 armchairs were
£2.2k in the sale. It was good quality leather. When told dh about it he nearly had a fit at spending that much on a sofa. This was mid nineties. He came and looked at it and loved it so we bought it. 30 years later it's still going strong and the design could be described as nearly Art Deco.

Were they from John Lewis? We’ve had our ‘almost art deco’ leather sofas from there for 20 years and they’re still going strong!

They're stunning, I totally get it.

When I was 21 I inherited a small amount from grandparents (was the most money I'd ever had, grew up quite poor) and spent it all on a trip to Japan and tickets to the Ring cycle at Covent Garden (I'd seen the operas on TV).

What a lovely way to spend an inheritance, you will always remember both the trip to Japan and the opera, and the legacy gift from your grandparents too.

I was drunk, about 20 years ago and bid for my dream car on eBay, luckily it was an auction not a buy it now. And I MESSAGED the seller to explain, I couldn't pay if I won and he jet me cancel it. I also bought a new bed for 4k about 12 years ago also drunk but to be fair we only replaced it last year. I don't drink much now.

PointsSouth · 31/03/2025 18:58

In my will I have bequeathed several grand to each of my loved ones 'to spend on whatever the hell you like in the next few months'.

Because when you're bereaved, you do. And I don't want them to spend their own money or be paying off credit cards for ages afterwards.

My late MIL would always bring out some elegant fish knives when we visited, to eat our chippy tea with!

Gosh. Reading that just unlocked a memory. My Grandmother used to do the same.

WhyDidIDiddle · 30/03/2025 19:56

but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

That is a lot of money. I'm assuming it's solid silver at that price!
It does make me feel better that you say you are still using them 20 years later and get pleasure out of it - I suppose if you then look at it as a yearly cost.

I think the shoes make me feel so bad because they aren't things that last in that way generally because they wear out even if repaired.

If you wear them enough to wear them out then they are definitely are not a waste of money. My mum would have used the expression “they don't owe me anything”.

Have you pitched this to Netflix as a six-part comedy drama? 😝

I'd watch that in a heartbeat. Sounds so much better than a lot of the dross stuff they put on. (MM fir example...)

JungAtHeart · 31/03/2025 19:11

Have to say accessories are my weakness. Shoes, bags, jewellery, hats, luggage … essentially anything that elevates an outfit. I couldn’t even begin to calculate how much I’ve splurged on shoes over the years 😂 but if it’s only one pair OP I wouldn’t beat myself up.

Ok I am not going to question the price of the cutlery but you still use it 20 years later? I have to buy new teaspoons every couple of months. 😂

Every couple of months? What are you doing to it?

MDTdottyT · 31/03/2025 19:19

We sent £15000 on a trip to Egypt 5 star, Nile cruise. It was meant to be a holiday of life time and it was.I was screaming to my son over the phone when the sun set over the Nile nr Luxor.
It will.make all over holidays seem insignificant for the rest of our life's but it waa worth every single penny and tip we gave

Growlybear83 · 31/03/2025 19:20

Reading this thread I’m perplexed by what people are doing with their teaspoons. 😳. I’ve got to the age of 67 and I’ve never lost a teaspoon in my life.

I once spent £1,600 on a chair. It's a really cool wooden Windsor style rocking chair and it was deeply discounted as the shop floor model from Heals. No regrets, I love it.

£2k on a pair of earrings, they are lovely but I keep worrying I will lose one.

I'm about to spend a lot of money on a new kitchen and although I can afford it the total cost is making me feel a bit ill.

Love the stags head!

Do they have the special locking backs??

My friend just dropped a huge amount of money on a pair of earrings, which is completely and totally unlike her, but she made sure they had special locking backs so it would be virtually impossible to lose one, if you weren't careless about what you did with them once you took them out.

I still wouldn't do it myself!!🤣

Brings to mind that saying: a fool and his money...

There really is no need to be nasty.

It may not be what you would've chosen, but it's what they have chosen and it has made them happy.

Why be so horrible about it?

Thinking about my spending actually my other huge frivolity is a very small elderly dog who had significant health problems that I adopted at the age of 15… he’s one of the loves of my life and I take excellent care of him; everyone thought he would come home to die basically he was in such a poor state.. We are now several years on from his adoption and he is very much still going, stable and enjoying himself a little bit in life - I have spent thousands on his vets bills this last two years- we can afford it so it’s not a daft expense and of course makes a huge difference to him. My DH hasn’t ever asked me how much he actually costs us because he knows it’s a ridiculous amount 😂 Everyone constantly tells me I’m insane for adopting him and continuing any expensive treatment required at his age but honestly this tiny ancient dog is the most resilient thing I’ve ever seen, and he still has a good quality of life thanks to my investments in him both money at the vets & daily care. And he has taught me so much about unconditional love! For me it’s very worth it. I won’t keep him going when I know it’s his time and he can’t go on. Keep the shoes. Love this thread x

Bless you. Adopting a senior dog is such a generous thing to do. May he live long and well.

Pedallleur · 31/03/2025 19:29

Once you get into those crazy shops like Aspreys it doesn't take long to get into a huge spend. Full of stuff you don't need (believe you don't).

peachgreen · 31/03/2025 19:31

Another way of looking at the £20k cutlery is to think… if you had £20k and you didn’t need to spend it on something sensible / didn’t want to spend it on an experience like a holiday for whatever reason… what WOULD you spend it on? Because I would spend £20k on a really good quality capsule wardrobe in a heartbeat.

Lazer hair removal. Absolute waste of time and money… which I’m reminded of daily as I look down at my hairy nether regions! 🫣😂

If I could look down like that and see my nether regions, I'd be thrilled regardless of what hair was and wasn't there!!

Are you blonde by any chance?

I used to get a whole lot waxed off, I prefer it, but I'm too old and too fat to want to put myself through that situation with a new person waxing (very very sadly the lovely woman that used to do it died🥲.). But age is taking care of it anyway it gets sparser every year!!

Worryworrierworrying · 30/03/2025 23:01

Last year not last night!

I thought you were being a tad casual!!

🤣

How is your DH doing now?

Bloozie · 31/03/2025 19:55

I bought some Off White trainers at Christmas. I am 46 and too old for this shit, but I loved them.

I also have very expensive cutlery, but mine was like, £285 expensive (though half price in the sale). And I love it, and no one dare lose the teaspoons - they are only used for desserts, not actual tea, and they are counted in and out.

My Le Creuset shallow casserole/frying pan thing was a ridiculously expensive replacement to a supermarket non-stick frying pan, but I love it.

I find that really depressing - a set of overpriced fish knives as a present. How much joy can you get out of a fucking fish knife?

Well then don't ever ask for fish knives as a gift. You do you...that's ok. You know you don't need negatively comment on something that brought someone else joy.
