In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

£20k on the IVF that produced my two children. I’d like to say that it was worth it, but now they’re teenagers who barely speak to us, I’m not so sure!!! 😂

Oh, they will speak to you when they emerge from the teen phase. It will be worth it!

As someone who spent the grand total of 2.5k on my knackered, rusty tin box of a campervan, I would KILL to see a picture of this beauty!! 😃

Edited

All I see is £ signs 😂

Oh gosh we live over seas but whilst in the UK excessive spending was all on horses. A little better now but we did fly our dogs over but I count that as essential.

loved reading all your posts, thank you all

A oil painting I had shipped from Amsterdam. It's not been up on the wall for 16 years.
It's is insured for £20k and if not a copy about £1m. I'm too scared to get it appraised because I couldn't keep it if it's the real deal. It's covered with an old bit of carpet!

I bought a macbook years ago, on interest free credit. Hated it as always used Windows. Hardly used it and begrudge the monthly payments.

Same!! I use it to do the weekly food shop.

Chickenwing2 · 31/03/2025 15:58

Also I got the Dyson air wrap. It was expensive and curls do not hold.

changedusernameforthis1 · 31/03/2025 16:02

I can't remember how much it was exactly, but I bought a bin to match other accessories in our kitchen which also automatically opened when it sensed you.

It's a nightmare to keep clean, leaves water residue really obviously, constantly opens and closes at the slightest movement, goes through batteries like crazy and has a few dents in it because it's not at all sturdy.

The bloody barbie dreamhouse we got for DD. Ridiculously expensive, DD lost interest within a few months, takes up a huge amount of space and just overall not really worth it.

We got the sky glass TV. Whilst it's lovely, it weighs a ton and the speech control works when it feels like it. A lot of money for something that does...pretty much what other TVs do, only slightly fancier.

I adore this thread. It has really made me smile - and made me think, too. More fun needed for me, for sure. Thank you!

Lobster picks are my new life goal.

Oh - lots of things over the years. Handbags I never use (some sold on at a fraction of the cost) but others I can’t bear to let go, clothes and shoes that were expensive and I never wear. Again,I’ve sold some but hardly made any money. I really regret buying a lot of jewellery (particularly Tiffany) which I hardly wear. My mum was suffering from dementia at the time and eventually had to go into a care home, so I guess I was trying to fill a void to help me cope.

My biggest regret was buying yellow gold jewellery a few years ago, particularly three bangles (£300 each) when I really only wore silver. Why? I don’t know? I think it’s because I saw an acquaintance wearing similar, and they looked great on her. However, this was her ‘signature’ look which she rocked.

I paid for the three very slim gold bangles to stack and then decided that I needed a more decorative one to add to them. I saw a vintage one on eBay dated 1960’s for £400 and bought it. It was being sold by one of the dealers who appears on the TV programme, ‘Dickinson’s Real Deal’ I liked it, but it was a bit thinner than I thought (so didn’t weigh as much as the others), but I kept it. I never wear them! I suppose I could sell them, but would only get a fraction of the price I paid for them (£1,300) or even scrap value. I love watching the programme and keep watching old episodes to see if the dealer actually bought it on the programme and to see how much she paid for it. I very much doubt she did, so it’s perhaps just as well that I don’t know the mark up price!

I think, if you really love something and can afford it, and it gives you pleasure, then go ahead and buy it and don’t feel guilty. Alas, I can’t say that I have, apart from my collection of antique Wedgwood Black basalt pottery, which I do actually love and will always treasure.

Picture attached of the bracelet, with the decorative one at the top. This was quite a while ago, and I know the price of gold is quite high at the moment, so maybe I could get some of my money back and buy a super expensive piece of Wedgwood black basalt!!!!

£1800 on dating matchmaking service , early 2000s it must have been. Long before internet dating was a thing. I went on two dates, zero interest. Then had two bereavements in quick succession. Just could not put myself in the space for dating. I put it on hold for a year then forgot about it.
I can’t even remember the name of the company!

I could afford it at the time but still, money wasted.

A £300 Playmobil set of the Star Trek Enterprise, with lights, sounds, and Tribbles. It’s beautiful!

Thank you so much for this thread. It has been my favourite one ever and I have been on here for 14 years. Second the nomination for Classics @mumsnet

Wear the shoes and enjoy them, I spend a fortune on shoes and feel great every time I put them on. My husband thinks shares in Jimmy Choo devalue every month I don't buy a pair. 👠👠💃

You can't take it with you, and who wants to be the richest person in the graveyard.

Recently for my 50th birthday I went to visit a wonderful lady, a 'bra witch'.

She took one look at me, told me I was in the wrong sized bra and bought out all these wonderful, whispy, gauzey things that somehow held my 32Fs in a rock hard embrace. They were so beautiful they bought tears to my eyes.

I had a strict budget, but ended up buying three - and a jumper - for £600.

And no, I don't wear them, they are too beautiful. But I am going to get them out as soon as I get home, burn my sturdy M&s £30 old reliable so I have no choice.

Might take someone's eye out tomorrow, though.

A bra witch?? I need to see this lady! Please could you share the details?

tempname1234 · 31/03/2025 18:06

Some times you need a pick me up really really badly

these shoes are them

plus

Wearing them, picture yourself walking into a better future. This is the reason they called to you and you answered by buying them. Now get out there and walk into your new future

bubblegumunicorn · 31/03/2025 18:06

Definitely not alone after we lost my FIL last year we booked two week all inclusive in Mexico so we could cry some where beautiful, drained our savings to do it but the spending impulses that accompany grief are so real! I think it's something to do with the endorphins.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 31/03/2025 18:10

Bloody hell! (Sorry cutlery related) I take it the kids don’t get to use the teaspoons for yogurt/throwing in the bin?

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 31/03/2025 18:16

And I haven’t done this(well I might but can’t remember) but dh, the fucker, in the midst of his mid life crisis, bought a pair of Paul Smith swimming trunks and an Armani knitted tie(which was impossible to tie so it didn’t look like a bit of string) 30 years ago. I found the receipt and the trunks (which were basic black) were almost a hundred quid and the tie about 120. We were of course fucking skint as church mice at the time. He doesn’t even like swimming!

PalmTreeAngel · 31/03/2025 18:18

Who the f spends 20k on cutlery?!

theonlygirl · 31/03/2025 18:19

Over £500 on a tent. Not long after COVID started I woke up one morning, panicked by the thought of having no holiday and bought a 6 person whopper. It was reduced, but even so. It's been used twice because......I absolutely loath, detest and despise camping. I'll never forget the look on DHs face sat next to me in the bed when I told him I wanted to buy it. An outdoors type, he thought I'd finally seen the error of my ways. It did give us 2 very enjoyable breaks with friends during that horrible time though so worth it.

Oh and of course a peleton. which I'm still paying for and is now just a clothes horse, I see first thing every morning as it's at the end of the bed.

BobbySox71 · 31/03/2025 18:20

A horse for £4k 7 years ago which is not a lot for a horse. But all the cost of keep him 🙈.
He is worth it though, my life is enriched taking care of and riding him 🥰

BadlyDrawnRoy · 31/03/2025 18:30

We stupidly bought upholstered Stressless sofas, and they are a pile of poo (we have a leather armchair and it's fantastic, so we assumed the upholstered sofas would be too). Wevd also tried another brand, Himola, and they also absolutely rubbish. Don't really know where to go next, because neither of the manufacturers mentioned will respond positively to any (confirmed by independent inspection) faults.

Dontsayyouloveme · 31/03/2025 18:31

DinoLil · 30/03/2025 20:36

£75 for my rescue dog. £2.5k on vets fees a few months later, gulp.

Arrgh have you sorted pet insurance out now?

TiredAH · 31/03/2025 18:32

My craziest splurge was my wedding dress. I bought it off the peg for £500. Got fatter and had to buy a second one a week before the wedding for another £500. But sold the first and got £350 back.

PS: To the lovely lady who got herself the 20k food weapons….did you buy The Last Supper’s cutlery right?? 🙃
