In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

I said people are different and I respect that. I still personally find it completely ridiculous. Especially when there is so much suffering in the world.

Oh fgs.

Care to elaborate on how that poster not spending 20k on cutlery would alleviate 'suffering in the world'?

I mean, it's not what I would personally choose to spend my hard-earned on, but why the hell not if they can afford it and it brings them joy? It is doing literally zero harm to anyone else.

MN really is the most painfully sanctimonious place at times.

I’ve never really understood fish knives.

Why do you need a different type of knife to eat fish?

If it's on the bone or even if it has the skin on a fish knife is designed to slide flat along the bone to remove it or under the skin to remove that. When we were buying our cutlery 50+ years ago we declined the option of buying lobster picks though.

CluelessAboutBiology · 31/03/2025 12:49

There are people on this thread who have unused items and others who want them - we could revive Noel Edmond’s’ Swap Shop and sell the items to each other.

Whatsnmynameagain9 · 31/03/2025 12:50

Can be fussed the rtft, but what was the outcome on the cutlery? I assumed it was 2k rather than 20..?

It was 20k it started with a lovingly bought single teaspoon £120 given on their wedding day and they built it up. It was actually very sweet. I love beautiful things but I think I’d be eating porridge with the big wooden stirring spoon and lots of finger food or buy a cheap spare set as I am too lazy to hand wash and polish, and lovingly re wrap in tissue everytime I want to use a spoon.

Don't beat yourself up Op. After I lost my mum, dad and sister in very quick and tragic circumstances I had a nervous breakdown. I started collecting the toys that I had once owned as a kid ... it racked up and now I have an entire room in my house kitted out in vintage kids toys and TV show merchandise. Makes me very happy being in there. Nobody knows but I'm well into the thousands now. Not in debt, I keep them dusted and I'm happy so fuck it.

It's interesting how many grief related posts there are on here. I totally identify @PoorUncleBarry and @Poppymeldrum

I think part of this sort of attraction towards toys, things you owned as a child, is totally driven by grief. It's about wanting to go back to a time when the parent/granddad was alive and all was safe in a world of school uniforms and toys. I know someone who spent a small fortune on recreating a Jellycat collection - and some of those discontinued lines are ultra ££££ on ebay.

Another way this thread has made me feel better is the point that if something gives you joy, that is really priceless and whatever is joyful to you is very personal. One man's fish knife is another man's lump of coal.

I seem to have spent a lot on experiences and travel and nothing on material possessions. Maybe time to change that.

They are completely unusable if you're left handed. Only work for you right handed types. I have to ask for a normal knife.

£300 on a (replica) Victorian dress for a murder mystery party! No one else dressed up, so it was both an expensive and embarrassing mistake!! It's sitting in my wardrobe sneering at me! I would like to sell it to recoup some of the money, but no-one would actually want to buy it, because fashion has moved on since the 1860s!!

This wins the thread. Sorry, as I know it was an expensive mistake😅

But I'm dying as I imgine the vision of you turning up in a replica Victorian dress and no-one else dressed up😂

oldmanandtheangel · 31/03/2025 13:36

A year ago, a dress for about £375. Bear in mind I'm a Primark/ charity shop kinda gal. And it didn't fit, couldn't do the back zip up, (am big of norks and wide of shoulders too) then my dad had a stroke and other things, so I never sent the dress back. It IS an amazing dress. So I need to find someone who can perhaps put a back panel or side panels in...so I spend even more on it. And that won't look great...

Some years ago we finally had spare money and I told my husband I wanted a face lift so I could be pretty at least once before I die. When he stopped laughing he said, “Face it, you will never be pretty. If you want to spend money buy something that gives you joy.”
I bought a horse a few days later.Much joy.

Baninarama · 31/03/2025 13:42

Blankscreen · 30/03/2025 20:33

A horse for my DD.

Currently in for about £10k what with buying him, saddle, rugs etc.

Worst part is she scared of him and won't even ride him 🤬

Bugger the rugs - pay for a week or two's training and then sell him asap. If your daughter is scared she'll never ride him again.

If you really like the shoes and you can afford them, it’s really not a waste of money. You’re allowed to have nice things! DH and I spent £20k on a cutlery set when we were young, pre-kids and had money. That’s arguably a ridiculous amount of money to spend on knives & forks, but 20 years later, we still get pleasure from them.

£20k 20 years ago, what is that in today's money? do you still have all the pieces, cutlery tends to have a habit of wandering off and I reckon it goes to the land of single socks

I bought a shark carpet shampooer on Amazon . I’m 3 months in to the five months interest free payments. It’s still in the box in the utility. It irritates me every time I walk past it.

Use it! Tipping away the brown water is very satisfying.

Gosh! Bit harsh.
though I agree with his sentiment. Horses are far lovelier than chopping up your face for no reason.

12 years ago my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas, Dubarry Galloway boots please. He didn’t get them for me as he thought they were ugly. I bought myself them and although they look completely wrecked now they are comfortable and waterproof and me and my dogs have walked miles in them. Lots of lovely memories. The heel has now cracked but they are still waterproof and I will be replacing them as soon as they let in.

Timetodownsize · 31/03/2025 14:01

Sorry have not RTFT but for those of you buying Chalet School paperbacks you really need to get the hardbacks or the Girls Gone By paperbacks as the Armada paperbacks have soooo much edited out.

I too can confess to spending money on books although fortunately dh embraced buying CS books for me to complete the set as it solved the problem of birthday, christmas and anniversary presents for quite some time.

I dont think so - that sounds perfect to me. Apart from Chalet School books of course !

£500 on a massive air beam tent.
It's too big to put up in the garden.
It's actually tricky-er to blow up than its poley-predecessor.
It's not that stable in wind.

We have continued to use the poley tents more.

We couldn’t afford the canteen as well! They are individually wrapped up in tissue and kept in the (free) velvet roll we got with them.

OP - can we see your lovely shoes! 🙏

Absolutely beautiful 😍 I imagine they bring joy every time you use those!

Fr0styfeet · 31/03/2025 14:40

£20k on the IVF that produced my two children. I’d like to say that it was worth it, but now they’re teenagers who barely speak to us, I’m not so sure!!! 😂

SnakebitesandSambucas · 31/03/2025 14:44

@SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter lots of people are in the market for those costumes. Look on eBay or Facebook. Or if your embarrassed drop if off at the charity shop and I will hope it's near me 😁

£170k on a motorhome upgrade. Could have many many long haul adventures with that money, but it’s working out so far. Trying to think about it in terms of soft leather seats, beautiful cabinetry, high tech knobs and whistles instead of cold hard cash.

As someone who spent the grand total of 2.5k on my knackered, rusty tin box of a campervan, I would KILL to see a picture of this beauty!! 😃
