Husband upset with me for 'forgetting' european father's day.

The context - We have lived in the Uk for many years and not celebrated european mother's day or father's day. He is European but I am British and we did used to live in his country. He's been off with me since Wednesday and just let me know tonight that he's disappointed in me for not acknowledging his special day.

My response was sorry BUT we don't normally celebrate this so why would I now after 10 years suddenly realise that he wants me to organise a celebration for him?.....I do always make a fuss of him on uk father's day, gift, special day out.

Am I the worst wife ever? Should I cancel mother's day?

I’d just tell him that you’d planned to celebrate on UK Father’s Day like you do every year, so get over it. You’ve probably got enough to do without pandering to his every whim.

FacingTheWall · 28/03/2025 22:53

Yanbu. Why has he suddenly decided that this day is special for him?

Yeah 🤣🤣

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/03/2025 22:56

Good way to get out of doing anything for Mothering Sunday, isn't it? Pick a date that is not relevant to a British woman living in Britain when there's the one in June that she always marks, kick off about it and guilt her into fannying around making him feel special instead?

Twat.

cestlavielife · 28/03/2025 22:57

Father s day not husband day.
He is not your father.
He can arrange for his kids to celebrate it with him.
Tell him he needs to remind everyone and arrange something on the day.
Mothers day up to you. If he doesn't organise you can you are the mother.

Redpeach · 28/03/2025 22:59

Why don't couples talk about this stuff before the day? Doesn't it just come up in normal conversation?

Safxxx · 28/03/2025 23:00

Seems like he doesn't want to treat you on mother's day and pulled this trick out lol...ignore him he is being petty

Joopy · 28/03/2025 23:04

@Redpeachit hasn't come up in the 10 years we've lived in the uk!....

How could the OP talk about it when she didn't know it was a thing ?

Scissor · 28/03/2025 23:13

Mother's Day is a lovely celebration on random dates in random countries.

Mothering Sunday in the UK is this Sunday ... You can call it Mother's Day too and do any lovely things you like. Also you can choose to go to church and get given, usually, a daffodil by your children.

If you go to church on Sunday with your husband then he can ask when his Fathering day is.

if op has lived in his country probably knows it’s a thing. In my country it’s and many times it’s bank holiday to celebrate it regardless of the day of the week.

SkaneTos · 28/03/2025 23:17

I don't think there is such a thing as a "European Father's Day"?

I am from a European country (Sweden) and we celebrate Father's Day on November 9th.

Probably Christian European countries .: Italy , Spain and Portugal was the 19th of march

edit to add Malta and Poland is also 19th. In many of them it’s BH

BellissimoGecko · 28/03/2025 23:19

The timing of this is really odd … right before Mother’s Day. Does he have form for ruining your special days?

I missed that father's day too, please don't tell him! He's from Italy and they celebrate on the 20th June.

He needs to have my approach: I want both.

Delphiniumandlupins · 28/03/2025 23:31

You can't forget something you didn't know existed. Tell your DH to stop sulking and he'll get Father's Day in June, when all the shops in the UK will be fully stocked. (Alternatively, buy him a Mother's Day card and alter it with a marker pen. But do nothing for him in June.)

Dampfnudeln · 28/03/2025 23:31

We live in Germany. I buy cards for our UK based parents on the relevant British dates. We celebrate the local dates for us because it fitted in with DC preparing cards in Kindergarten and school. Your DH should’ve told you that he wanted to celebrate on his home country’s day instead, or is he assuming you’re a mind reader!

Kittybelle123 · 28/03/2025 23:37

DH is also Italian - he acknowledges that it’s celebrated on March 19th (St Joseph’s day) but he has never wanted a fuss about it. I hope your H comes round, they have a second chance in June to be made a fuss of…

SnemonyLicket · 28/03/2025 23:37

So what was his response to “sorry but we don’t normally celebrate this so why would I now after 10 years suddenly realise that you want me to organise a celebration for you on 20th March”?

Redrosesposies · 28/03/2025 23:40

Tell him to fuck off.

This is becoming my go to response to most of the threads on here right now. I am sick to death of entitled men.

When you write "Christian European countries", do you mean Roman Catholic Christian countries?

It is unusual in Sweden to be part of the Roman Catholic Church, but more than half of the population in Sweden are Christians of some kind (by faith, part of a congregation, from tradition, etc.). The former Swedish state church is Protestant and has more than 5 million members.

In Sweden, Norway, and Finland, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of November, which in 2025 will be November 9th.

(Sorry for the digression from the subject of the thread.)
Different countries/cultures have different Father's Days.

Joopy · 28/03/2025 23:43

I did know it existed as I used to live there but since living in the UK we've celebrated UK days. He didn't celebrate UK mother's day when we lived in Italy and I didn't expect him to.
