To think baths are awful?

I’ve lived in my house for four years and there is a very deep and long L shaped bath which is the envy of my bath loving friends. I’ve never been keen on baths and never used it. But tonight I thought, for a change, I’d run myself one and take my book.

It was absolutely shit. Took bloody ages to run, then I got in and couldn’t hold by book right. The water was a nice temperature but it made my face too hot. It was boring. I lasted twenty minutes and then drained the water. Complete waste.

I find them mildly disgusting. Right up close to the grouting. It’s horrible. AIBU?

I couldn't live without my bath...it's basically therapy for me, hot water, aromatherapy oil, glass of wine and a book or something trashy on the iPad...occasionally snacks.

Bliss.

Ella31 · 27/03/2025 00:05

I would love a bath that when you drain the water, you can open a little side door and just walk/crawl/fall out🤣 pregnancies and a c-section later, getting out of a bath is a mammoth exercise for me🤣

They always look delightful on film and tv though

kitchentablegardentable · 27/03/2025 00:10

What is an L shaped bath. Really struggling to see what the point of that would be.

Do you mean P shaped?

I love a bath. But I couldn’t read in the bath, I would find that comfortable and not relaxing.

I like it roasting hot, as hot as I can stand it, then keep topping it up once I’m in.

I can’t spend too long in it though. The first couple of minutes are the best. Can’t stand it when it starts to cool down.

That's what we're getting. They cost a fortune though, just as well we have a good stash of savings!

Lesphynx · 27/03/2025 00:15

You are very wrong. Baths are one of my ultimate comfort. I like them scalding hot, and with a good book, a snack, and a brew.

I don't have baths to get clean. I have them to relax.

Xerttinmyselfnot · 27/03/2025 00:19

I love a bath with music and a glass of wine.

Ahhhh they actually exist. 😃😃 furiously starts saving now 😃🤣

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 27/03/2025 00:26

In the winter, a bath that is slightly too hot, plus the radio is bliss.

In the hot days of summer, an evening tepid bath makes you actually sleep very well.

Either way, you must get prune fingers before you get out.

LBFseBrom · 27/03/2025 00:27

You're not unreasonable to dislike baths, they are just not to your taste. Many people prefer showers. However you are unreasonable to be so vehement about it! It really is not a big deal.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 27/03/2025 00:32

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice and anyone else who knows about Epsom Salts - I have some that are a good ten years old, can I still use them? With bubble bath or alone? How much? Like a tablespoon or something? Anything else I need to know?

Yeah, walk in baths are for people like myself who can't now climb in and out of a conventional bath. You do have to sit in them empty and wait for them to fill though, so no more gathering my gear together while the bath is running anymore, not for me anyway. I have an over the bath seat, so I'll sit there in me teesh and knicks while it fills. Luckily we have good water pressure and a decent combi boiler so it shouldn't take too long. DH and DD can just keep the door shut and clamber in and out like a normal bath.

Dianejen · 27/03/2025 00:38

Oh man, I love my tubs! When we bought the house my main purchase was a extra wide tub with jets. Even at my big age santa brings me my bath salts and creme bombs every year. I find them so.good for my muscle pain and skin etc. I also grew up in a house that didn't have a shower until I was about 17 so was used to baths and just love them.

ChopstickNovice · 27/03/2025 00:38

Yeah, I much prefer showers.

I used to love really hot baths until menopause knackered my internal thermostat. Now a baby could probably bathe in the water I have. 😅 Too hot, and I feel all flustered and woozy. So long as it's a comfortable temperature for me though, I can soak for ages listening to music or audiobooks. 🙂

RobertaFirmino · 27/03/2025 00:42

Twice a week for me. Epsom baths seem to help a little when I'm stiff (I've got arthritis) but I need help getting in and out. I stay in it for 20 mins. A walk-in bath would be an absolute godsend and it's something I'm saving for.

johnd2 · 27/03/2025 00:55

Yeah to be honest bath was all I had as a kid, then switched to showers as an adult.

When we bought this place it had a bath and when having kids I thought ah we can use it now, like everyone says baths are essential for kids. Well we've used it once for our eldest and now it is just a repository for junk.
Complete waste of space and once I have time it'll be a nice shower area!

RitaIncognita · 27/03/2025 01:09

I'm in the bath right now reading this thread. I have a good long soak at least twice a week.

I have no problem holding a book while in the bathtub, but a Kindle is much easier.

TheSilentSister · 27/03/2025 01:33

My bathroom has a separate shower cubicle and a huge bath.
The first time I got in the bath I couldn't stop laughing. I could stretch out fully and the water was right upto my neck. I've never had a bath like it, it's a pure treat. I feel like I should light candles and play whale music, lol.
I'm a shower lover but I need the occasional bath, even just to soak my tired feet and just feel pampered.

SapphireSeptember · 27/03/2025 02:02

@TheSilentSister That bath sounds amazing! 😍

mathanxiety · 27/03/2025 03:58

I don't think I've had a bath since I was 8. Showers all the way.

I cant understand the attraction of wallowing in your own dirt .

sweetpickle2 · 27/03/2025 04:15

I have a bath most evenings if I’m home, highlight of my day. I like the water to be so hot that it feels like it’s lightly scalding my skin as I lower into it- book or some telly on my phone, glass of wine, face mask, absolute bliss.

For actual cleaning/washing hair I shower, which I do in the mornings.

My partner never uses the bath at home, we’ve had approx two baths together when we’ve stayed in fancy hotels with a big freestanding one but to paraphrase Chandler I don’t think it’s the bath he’s into, but the wet naked lady.

They’re not for everyone, OP.

kezzykate · 27/03/2025 05:19

I absolutely love them and have one most days. One of the few ways I really relax. I love bubble baths and bath bombs and making it really appealing.

RampantIvy · 27/03/2025 07:02

Fruitytutti223 · 26/03/2025 23:12

I think it depends what they are washing with. I have long hair so by the time I have done all that the baths a mess. Practically sticky the water 🤮

I don't wash my hair in the bath. I don't wash my hair every time I have a shower. It would look like straw if I did.

Just how dirty are you when you get in the bath? Do you do manual labour in a dirty environment?

I used to love baths years ago, used to spend ages in there, candles all around, wine, mustic on, running more hot water to keep it hot

Was quite fat at the time found it really comfortable

Then got too fat and couldnt really fit

Now not fat at all and have no bum left and its agony, I was looking forward to enjoying baths again to find I cannot sit in the bath, its awful, just not enjoyable.

Maybe try one of these bath cushions? My mil loves hers after weight loss.
