To think baths are awful?

I’ve lived in my house for four years and there is a very deep and long L shaped bath which is the envy of my bath loving friends. I’ve never been keen on baths and never used it. But tonight I thought, for a change, I’d run myself one and take my book.

It was absolutely shit. Took bloody ages to run, then I got in and couldn’t hold by book right. The water was a nice temperature but it made my face too hot. It was boring. I lasted twenty minutes and then drained the water. Complete waste.

I find them mildly disgusting. Right up close to the grouting. It’s horrible. AIBU?

I wouldn’t buy a house without a bath. I love them. They reset my mood at the end of the day. I have a whole ritual of bath, body butter, fresh pyjamas. Bliss.

Some people don’t like soaking in dirty water?

Do you work down the mines?

Ohh it's just the best isn't it. All you said and then add in new duvet day and pure bliss is the word! Just like a big toasty cinnamon bun in the covers after it.

Baths are nice enough but only worth the hassle once in a long while so I have a bath when I visit my parents but otherwise happy without a bath.

Sauna is what I can't live without - now that's proper relaxation. Can easily spend a whole evening saunaing.

Love a good soak in the bath - glass of chilled fizz topped up by DH as required and a good book to read on Kindle. I was so pleased when we even had a bath in our suite on a recent cruise loved having a soak before dinner especially as they provided lovely Molton Brown bath products to use. The only thing that tops this is a lovely cold frosty night sat outside soaking in hot tub and watching the stars.

GameOfJones · 27/03/2025 08:07

I absolutely adore a bath and have them almost every day. The only time I get in the shower is if I'm absolutely filthy (covered in mud from gardening or something like that) or if I'm on my period. Otherwise, it's a daily bath.

I like pouring in bath salts and oil or bubble bath if not washing my hair and having a really good soak. Podcast on, water scalding hot and it is bliss. If I'm washing my hair then I also apply a hair mask, have a long soak then scrub every inch of me with soap on exfoliating gloves and emerge with skin like silk!

The bath is my happy place. I see showers as purely functional and a bit joyless.

What I would really love is one of those Japanese soaking omni tubs that are deep with a built in seat so you can sit in hot water up to your chin. But alas, not enough space to have one and a separate shower cubicle in our current house.

Same for me.

I love a bath. But I am rather perplexed by the idea of showering first. Why do you do that..?

I'll think you'll find it's because some people are utter loonsSmile

Exactly! People have odd ideas. Probably the same people who bleached their shopping/children during COVID.

I don't think I've had a bath since I was 8. Showers all the way.

I cant understand the attraction of wallowing in your own dirt .

Do you wash once a year? Daily I’m but accumulating grime. And if you soak for a while you can scrub off softened dead skin Japanese/Korean style and end up properly clean and smooth as silk

redshoesredlaces · 27/03/2025 09:31

It’s always the same on MN. Some people love something. Others don’t. But instead of just saying ‘yeah. Not for me. They don’t bring me joy and I find them boring, they have to try to squeeze some derisive insult against people holding the opposing view
‘ew. Stewing in your own filth. That’s repulsive’.

when clearly it’s not repulsive unless the same people are using a towel only once, showering with antibacterial scrub and changing their pillow cases daily then their woes about bath dirt are just ludicrous and a juvenile way of attempting to look like their views are superior.
just grow up and learn to converse without needing insults to substantiate your view point 🙄

maw1681 · 27/03/2025 09:37

Yeah I hate them! Been in current house almost 9 years and I can’t think if I’ve ever had a bath here! I find them uncomfortable and boring. I also end up just looking at the grouting and noticing dirt and marks that need scrubbing.
I’ll sometimes have one if I stay in a nice hotel.

You can get sit in baths here, that have an integrated seat inside and are tall enough for the water to be up to your chin when you're inside. Again, because they're designed to be accessible to the less mobile, they have a door so they have to be filled while the person is inside. We've opted for a conventional lie down walk in bath over a seated one as that's what we all prefer, so it suits all of us.

Are you a coal miner? What are you doing to have dirty suds you can see?

Bathing and showering inevitably involve dirty (dirty in the sense of dead skin, perspiration, etc) water to some degree. If it didn't there would be no need to clean the bath after use. I prefer not to soak in that water.

sweetpickle2 · 27/03/2025 10:10

I don't think you're 'soaking in your own filth' in a bath anymore than you're 'wearing your dead skin cells' in your clothes all day.

(Which is to say: yes, technically you are, but who cares)

JasmineAllen · 27/03/2025 10:14

Baths are great if you have aching muscles/a bad back :)

RampantIvy · 27/03/2025 10:15

Well said @redshoesredlaces

It never ceases to amaze me how many overly fastidious germophobes are on mumsnet.

They must find life exhausting with all that cleaning they must do.

HappydaysArehere · 27/03/2025 10:44

I used to love a bath. Used to lay back and revise for exams. It’s surprising what you can remember when you are totally relaxed. Unfortunately age has now decided that I need a walk in shower.

If you are really concerned about dead skin cells then you SHOULD be soaking in a bath. Turkish, Japanese and Koreans (possibly others) have whole processes of soaking then scrubbing. The soaking softens the dead skin so it comes off better.
So Ew. You don’t do this

DilemmaDelilah · 27/03/2025 13:47

I love a bath, but I use it for relaxing and I shower to wash. I'm of a rotund figure, so I purposely bought a wider bath to enable getting in and out more easily. The shape of the bath is also really important for ease of access/egress. We had a bath with handles before and they were in exactly the wrong place to help - a complete waste of space. I like to read in the bath so I have a bath pillow for the head and neck, and I fold a towel over the top of the basin and put my book on that for when I need to get in and out of the bath. We have a very small bathroom so it's right next to the bath. If it wasn't then I would put a stool or a cupboard next to the bath to hold my book.

I have difficulty sleeping and chronically low magnesium so I make my own bath salts from Epsom salts and soak up the magnesium when I'm in the bath (as well as taking supplements and using a skin spray). I usually only spend about 20 minutes soaking, but it really helps me relax.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 26/03/2025 22:38

You need one of those shower heads on a flexible hose you can take off the hook and aim where needed.

We used to have one, but the affair in our new bathroom is more of a nuisance.

I still don't like the feeling of water hitting me - I have autism and it is a sensory thing.

Dweetfidilove · 27/03/2025 13:57

Ditch the book and enjoy some music (maybe with some wine). I gave up trying to balance the book. Now it's me, Sade and candles.
The only issue I have is dozing off.

Spring025 · 27/03/2025 14:12

I love a bath, a morning bath was the only think that got me through the day when DS was a baby and didn't sleep.

I also feel much cleaner having a proper soak than just having a sprinkling of water on me from a shower.
