To think baths are awful?

I’ve lived in my house for four years and there is a very deep and long L shaped bath which is the envy of my bath loving friends. I’ve never been keen on baths and never used it. But tonight I thought, for a change, I’d run myself one and take my book.

It was absolutely shit. Took bloody ages to run, then I got in and couldn’t hold by book right. The water was a nice temperature but it made my face too hot. It was boring. I lasted twenty minutes and then drained the water. Complete waste.

I find them mildly disgusting. Right up close to the grouting. It’s horrible. AIBU?

Baths can be disappointing BUT When you DON’T have a bathtub at home it suddenly becomes a much desired luxury.

Two kids in a tiny baby bath inside the shower cubicle is getting a bit intense. Plus, rinsing off muddy rain suits would be very convenient atm.

Tagyoureit · 26/03/2025 23:11

Baths without a sloped back are shit, my new house has one and I've not used it because what's the point as I can't lay back/lounge so I just shower now.

In my old bath I could and I loved a leisurely bath with my book and a glass of wine. I miss it a bit.

TimeForABreak4 · 26/03/2025 23:12

I always do the same whenever I have one. Get in, feel too hot and bored and get it very quickly and don't feel clean after it. Would rather have a shower and get in clean pj's and covers to read a book in bed.

Same here.

There are some ridiculousy fastidious germ phobic posters on here, or they work in a mine.

I think it depends what they are washing with. I have long hair so by the time I have done all that the baths a mess. Practically sticky the water 🤮

Time40 · 26/03/2025 23:12

I don’t understand the benefit of that little extra bit

I think they're supposed to be for when there is also a shower fitted - to give more space for showering.

XWKD · 26/03/2025 23:13

My only physical impairment (so far) is that I can't get out of the bath. 🤣

I’ve never seen one like that before but it looks like it’s to make the bottom end big enough for showering. I’ve been in hotels where the bath is sort butternut squash shaped for that reason.

anyway obviously the OP is VVU.

NattyTurtle59 · 26/03/2025 23:16

I agree, I hate baths and have done for years. We moved into a house with a bath years ago and I looked forward to having one - what a disappointment!

I'm renting a flat now which had a bath, and when there was a mysterious leak coming from the bathroom and it was decided the bath needed to go I was overjoyed.

BeaLola · 26/03/2025 23:17

I love my bath. It's extra wide and deep and insulated.

I have a shower every morning and a bath most nights.

Sit in the bath with my kindle and a glass of wine or the Archets and a glass of wine - very relaxing - also a good place to escape fron MIL or the teenager

DeepRoseFish · 26/03/2025 23:19

Baths are great when it’s really cold! Try some bath salts and essential oils!

Auburngal · 26/03/2025 23:20

Hate baths. They take so long to fill. My ex and I rented a place which had a bath but no shower. We had to have a bath each every other day. No time to have a bath each in the morning. Then due to the small hot water tank, there was only enough to have a bath, as discovered after coming back from 4 nights at Leeds Fest, not washing during the time. Moaning to the letting agents to get a shower was the best thing. Got it eventually.

As a kid, I hated showers. Only had showers when camping. Now love it.

Think I have only used bath four times in the 16 years I have lived here

Auburngal · 26/03/2025 23:24

I cannot stand those baths in the middle of the bathroom. My balance is crap, so need a wall to hold onto to get out. I used the chair in the hotel room to hold myself onto.

Difficult to get in/out. Look difficult to clean too

Bubblebubblepoppop · 26/03/2025 23:28

Haven't had a bath for over 10 years now. Hate them. I can never get comfy, they go cold too quickly, and I always feel faint getting out of them.

I also don't really get how you do things like wash body/hair in a bath. Do you still have to rinse at the end with clean water from the shower? Because if not then surely the bath water becomes all soapy/shampooey so when you get out all that residue is still on you? It feels a bit akin to washing up using a washing up bowl which I also think is plain weird, when the plates etc aren't rinsed at the end, they're simply taken out of the boggy bowl and placed to dry 🤮.

Anyway, give me a steaming hot powerful shower any day.

Springee · 26/03/2025 23:29

I get the Japanese approach to baths and showers up to a point. Shower to get clean, bath to soak and relax.

My personal approach is a bit different. 6 days shower, twice weekly that's also a hair wash shower (occasionally just a sep hair wash as needed), once a week bath. I always feel much cleaner after a bath. Feet, legs, bits 😉 they do feel much cleaner after a bath.

My supplementary though on this is that the bubbles contribute to the all round cleaning effect and that in a hard water area getting really clean in the shower is more difficult than in a bath. I have very thick hair and it takes ages for it to really get wet in the shower at home but it's totally different in soft water areas.

🤦‍♀️ ffs!

I'm serious! If your boiler gets condemned through carbon monoxide poisoning and you can't afford a new one, you will be grateful for any form of heating and running hot water! It won't matter if its a bath or a shower!

SapphireSeptember · 26/03/2025 23:36

I have a bath occasionally. I love staying at Premier Inn, they have massive deep baths. I was so happy when I moved into my new flat because it has a bath! Previous flat only had a shower, before that it was a HMO and the landlord had rules about how long you could spend in the shower.

We’ve stayed in a couple of hotels where they’ve had a fancy looking bath in the bedroom. But they had nowhere to hang the towels and they were weirdly uncomfortable. I didn’t have any issue getting in and out but I’d imagine many people would.

JeanGenieJean · 26/03/2025 23:47

I hate baths, I'm either cold or feel like a lobster, I can never get it right. I never feel clean afterwards either. I like a shower.

BunnyLake · 26/03/2025 23:49

I had a bath this afternoon. I don’t like them too hot but I enjoy a nice soak. Not so much in the summer but I love a nice warm bath on a cold winter evening.

SwedishEdith · 26/03/2025 23:50

redshoesredlaces · 26/03/2025 23:09

What is that little extra but for?

More standing space for the shower bit.

Tigergirl80 · 26/03/2025 23:52

i Love relaxing in a nice hot bath. We only have a wet room now as the bath was unsafe for ds. I always make sure there’s a bath when booking somewhere to stay. If I have one in the morning I’ll take a brew in with me. If at night it’s a glass of wine. Never take a book in I would probably drop it in😂😂😂

ChorusOfDisapproval · 26/03/2025 23:52

YANBU. I don't get the pleasure of a bath at all. If I want to relax with a glass of wine and a book I'll do it without having to dry myself afterwards. Boring and pointless IMO

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/03/2025 23:53

I'm looking forward to having a bath again. After I broke my hip and was given a total hip replacement, my lower leg and foot has been left partially paralysed due to nerve damage which I'm told may or may not get better. I can't manage the stairs and certainly couldn't get into our current bath which is a slipper bath. I loved soaking in it but the sides are too high for me to manage now so I've had to wash at the kitchen sink every evening for the past seven weeks. We've just ordered a walk in bath, and DH will install grab rails in the bathroom and handrails on the wall the stairs are on so I can get up and down them again. Plus we'll be able to move from the sofa bed in the living room back to our bedroom. Can't come soon enough!

onwardsup4 · 26/03/2025 23:56

Too tired for a detailed reply but I couldn’t agree with you more! All that hassle to boil your arse and then be bored after two minutes YNBU

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/03/2025 23:58

I can't read in the bath as I'm short sighted and my glasses would just steam up as well as me feeing very silly being naked and wearing specs. We have a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom, I take my phone in and listen to audiobooks, stories on BBC Sounds, podcasts etc. while I soak. I'm so looking forward to being able to do this again!
