To think baths are awful?

I’ve lived in my house for four years and there is a very deep and long L shaped bath which is the envy of my bath loving friends. I’ve never been keen on baths and never used it. But tonight I thought, for a change, I’d run myself one and take my book.

It was absolutely shit. Took bloody ages to run, then I got in and couldn’t hold by book right. The water was a nice temperature but it made my face too hot. It was boring. I lasted twenty minutes and then drained the water. Complete waste.

I find them mildly disgusting. Right up close to the grouting. It’s horrible. AIBU?

I prefer to shower but when very ill a couple of years ago a bath was much easier, too weak to stand long enough to shower so I wouldn't remove the bath.

Why would you shower before getting into a bath? 😵‍💫

Because they are worried about the bath water being too dirty I assume...

How on earth did we manage when most houses had baths and no showers?

Worrying about dirty bath water if you bathe or shower every day and don't work in a mine is such a first world issue.

I feel like this about showers, I hate them.

What is disgusting about showers?

Missey85 · 28/03/2025 10:40

I don't like baths either I like showers better I don't want to sit in dirty water 🙁

Oh, for goodness sake!
Just how dirty are you?
Do you work in a mine?

There seem to be an awful lot of Mumsnetters who work on building sites, pig farms and coal mines going by how dirty they say they are.

Or just from a different culture where we do things differently?

The principle of not harming the environment can be embraced by any culture.
And the idea behind it comes from hygiene preoccupations - not wanting to 'sit' in your own dirt I suppose, but can still be re-considered.

Not disgusting, but a bath is a much nicer experience.

Why would the water be dirty? Just run a bath with fresh water (in a clean bath). You shed skin cells everywhere not just in the bath (that’s what dust is)

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 28/03/2025 14:16

I love a bath. I'm a shortarse so I put my head back so the water is covering my ears. Not good for ear infections though.

Jux · 28/03/2025 15:13

For me, a bath is a luxury not an opportunity to get clean = for that I'll have a shower.

No, a bath is for luxuriating in with a book and cuppa and a cat sitting on the side purring. It is the only way I get warm in the winter, sitting in a hot bath for several hours reading. Lovely lovely lovely.

Quite. Given that most or all posters probably shower or bath every day, they really can't be very dirty? Mind you, MN does seem to be weirdly full of super-fastidious, germphobic anti-bac fans.

zingally · 28/03/2025 16:36

I love a bath!

I definitely have to be in the mood for one though. I won't do one if I'm really tired though, as I'm in real danger of falling asleep and that can be really dangerous in baths.
I like to take a snack, a drink and a book. I'll often do a facemask as well. I'll usually have some quiet classical music playing in the background.
I do some of my best daydreaming in the bath as well.

Bluebellwood129 · 28/03/2025 16:42

What’s remarkable is that British people -specifically white British are blissfully unaware that many other cultures and countries think of them as being a bit grubby and unhygienic.
They were very late adopters of daily baths, many still don’t. They do a sink clean with a flannel. Which some of them re-use. They wash their pits and bums with a flannel in sink water then reuse the flannel. They wear outside shoes in the house and go to bed with the day’s pollution on them. They don’t actually wash their feet or backs. They just allow water to run over them.

Do you actually know any White British people?

My bathroom has a separate shower cubicle and a huge bath.
The first time I got in the bath I couldn't stop laughing. I could stretch out fully and the water was right upto my neck. I've never had a bath like it, it's a pure treat. I feel like I should light candles and play whale music, lol.
I'm a shower lover but I need the occasional bath, even just to soak my tired feet and just feel pampered.

I'm right with you. Large bath for luxury soaking, large wet room-style shower otherwise. Best of both worlds. Utter perfection.

Shower first, then soak in a nice warm bubbly bath for about 45 minutes with a good book and glass of wine. Really relaxing imo.

Relaxing on a soft sofa with a glass of wine is a lot more comfortable.

Totally agree, not had one for maybe a decade! They make me feel dead.

Me too.
Ugh, this has just brought back memories of bath sharing with an ex 😬

All that acting sexy obligigations when all you want to do is crawl into bed.. To sleep.

I don't use jacuzzi's either.
They make me compulsively yawn and then i have to get dressed and drive home.

annonymousse · 01/01/2026 17:11

Daily shower to keep clean but I love love love the luxury of a long hot bath during the winter months. YABVU 🤣

03cg73 · 01/01/2026 19:29

I love a bath. I genuinely look forward to it. I might be conditioned to it tho. When we first bought our house there was a built in shower over the bath that didn’t work. Tried to get it fixed but there was some complications with plumbing which meant having to rip into walls etc. we were planning on remodelling the entire upstairs so decided just to leave fixing the shower until then. The remodelling ended up taking 10 years to get started 😂 so for 10 years we had no shower and only a bath. DP would shower at the gym but me and my DDs had a bath every day. We now have a shower, but I still prefer a bath

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 01/01/2026 21:46

I swim before work most days. At the moment, the sea temperature (North Sea) is about 6C. I love coming home and getting into a warm bath. Today, because I didn't have to work, I wallowed in the bath for about 40 minutes. Total bliss.
