To think baths are awful?

I’ve lived in my house for four years and there is a very deep and long L shaped bath which is the envy of my bath loving friends. I’ve never been keen on baths and never used it. But tonight I thought, for a change, I’d run myself one and take my book.

It was absolutely shit. Took bloody ages to run, then I got in and couldn’t hold by book right. The water was a nice temperature but it made my face too hot. It was boring. I lasted twenty minutes and then drained the water. Complete waste.

I find them mildly disgusting. Right up close to the grouting. It’s horrible. AIBU?

YANBU. Ripped out the 3 we had and made far bigger showers. Can't beat a big walk-in shower. Hate jacuzzis too.

CatsWhiskerz · 27/03/2025 14:51

You fool, you forgot the wine 🤣
I LOVE baths, in fact I've had one at lunchtime and I'm still in bed (pain day for me with a horrible inflammatory Co diction I have) ... no wine for me today just plenty of water

Aworldofwonder · 27/03/2025 14:54

Yanbu. Give me a hot shower anyday with pressure so strong it feels like you're in a boxing ring.

Hopper123 · 27/03/2025 15:00

I love a nice hot bubble bath but what makes it shit in my house is the fact that the minute I submerge myself in the water suddenly 4 people need entrance to the bathroom to go to the toilet or to ask for a drink, or to cut the label off something or to tell them where something is etc etc why they need to take a dump right there and then when we have another shower room right across the hallway is beyond me but apparently that's the scary bathroom and none of them will use it!! I last about 15mins usually before I give up completely....one day my bath will come!!!!

Auburngal · 27/03/2025 16:50

When having a shower over a bath, I much prefer a power shower control or electric shower than those fancy shower attachment on taps where you have to bend over to control the flow/temp and then on/off via bath taps.

Plus have the same problem with running a bath, too hot or too cold.

Why would you need a shower before a bath?!!

I think it’s a cultural thing - the Japanese side of my family all do this and it’s what I grew up with, so to me it’s normal! Plus in menopause with the hot flushes it’s good to get the sweat off first!

AdaStewart · 27/03/2025 17:14

Oh God no, I could not lie in a bath reading! We don’t have one, but recently had a weekend away & really enjoyed a quick bath.

I love a bath. But I am rather perplexed by the idea of showering first. Why do you do that..?

Bath isn't wasteful enough for them so they have to make it even worse!
Hygiene freaks probably.

RampantIvy · 27/03/2025 17:37

@Alllll baths aren't awful. You just don't like them. That's all.

I shower or bath and like both equally.

I can't read in the bath as I'm short sighted and my glasses would just steam up as well as me feeing very silly being naked and wearing specs. We have a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom, I take my phone in and listen to audiobooks, stories on BBC Sounds, podcasts etc. while I soak. I'm so looking forward to being able to do this again!

Are you sure you aren't long sighted? Short sighted people can usually read print that is close up. It's distance that short sighted people can't see. I'm very short sighted and can read a book very easily without my glasses

If you suffer from stiffness, aching muscles, nothing beats a really hot bath.

I agree. Relaxing in a hot bath eases muscle tension if you're stressed, they really help you to fall to sleep quickly. And the water supports your weight too.

Sometimes if you're very tired in winter you can almost feel like you've caught a chill at the end of the day, or I can anyway. I almost feel cold to my bones when i'm totally exhausted and I feel like I'm coming down with something. Half an hour in a hot bath usually warms me up and relaxes me enough to go straight to sleep and often by the morning I feel fine again.

But I haven't actually had a bath for a few years as I'm not convinced the plumbing was done right when we had our extension done. The bath empties far too quickly and makes the wierdest noise as if it's being sucked down more quickly than if it was just falling with gravity. We had a a pipe come apart downstairs and there was some leakage so i don't want to risk it again just in case it happens again.

Depends how old you are. I was always like you. But since I turned 50 my eye sight has changed a LOT and I have started needing varifocals.

Same!

I've a couple of family members though who are so short sighted, they can't see to read a book and need glasses or contacts.

I totally agree. I never use my bath, I just don’t understand the pleasure of sitting there in water. What’s the point?

The point has been made a hundred times 😀. For those who enjoy a bath they are relaxing, help you sleep, warm you through, and can offer a bit of peace in a busy household. For those who don't like them, they do none of those things, which is also fine.

I guess you don’t understand sitting in steam or standing around in a pool or lying on a lounger in summer either.

sensory pleasure is a wonderful thing.

The first two, no. Absolutely not.

Lying in the sun is heaven though.

Takes all sorts 😍

Definitely hate a bath in fact mines gone, as soon as my kids were old enough out it went, who wants to sit in a soup of skin, scum and dirt. No thanks to watching my belly flobbing about in bubbles it’s depressing!!!

I'm 66 and wear varifocals, but can read without glasses. I have been very short sighted for a long time and only recently realise how lucky I am that I need to take my glasss off to read small print.

There is quite a lot of point if you enjoy it.

Well there isn't a point if you don't enjoy it. But there is if you do. Obviously.

Back to someone who must work down t’mines and bathe once a fortnight.

The rest of us aren’t caked in dirt and scum. And the dead skin actually exfoliates off much much better if you soak in a bath.

bettydavieseyes · 27/03/2025 21:15

I bath everyday. I'm obsessed with baths and take a minimum of one hour (that's a quick one for me) and a maximum of 4-5 hours given the chance! My average time is 2 hours. I just love the warm water, it's relaxing. Its also quiet, private and comfortable. I don't understand why you had a hot face, but if the waters hot you add cold?

Well said @redshoesredlaces

It never ceases to amaze me how many overly fastidious germophobes are on mumsnet.

They must find life exhausting with all that cleaning they must do.

I know. And don’t mention hotel baths! 😱😱
