Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

I take it thats an unpleasant dig about the back door being unlocked?
I always keep the front door locked and rarely use it. I'm in and in and out the back door multiple times during the day. It doesn't have a yale lock. I lock the door when I go upstairs. I was sat this evening in sight of the door so it shouldn't have been necessary to lock it.
Why be so sarcastic?

Why be so naïve?

I'm in and in and out the back door multiple times during the day.

And? How hard is it to unlock a door when you want to get in?

Of course he shouldn't have come in. (How did he get to the back door, by the way? Isn't your garden/yard secured either?)

The point is, you have been upset by it, and you could have saved yourself the upset by doing the very straightforward action of keeping your door locked.

I used to live in a rural village. It had a train station with direct links to London, although the journey took about 4 hours. There was a spate of burglaries with small high value items being stolen. Eventually the police worked out it was a small group of thieves coming from London during the working day who were stealing what they could and then hopping back onto the train to sell the stolen goods in London.

As soon as I read the OP I just knew what the replies would immediately be, but even then I was shocked by the response. Over a hundred comments all banging on repeatedly about the same irrelevant point! Christ almighty this place is fucking mental sometimes.

OP hasn't asked for opinions on the rights and wrongs of locking your doors, presumably because she doesn't give a fuck about anybody's opinions on that. If she gets burgled, or finds that her insurance is invalid, or the rain gets in (?!) THAT'S HER LOOKOUT. Maybe those are stupid things to do, who cares? She's an adult and aware of those things and obviously has decided the trade off (convenience, children coming in and out, who knows?) is worth it.

What she asked was: given that the door is unlocked, is it unreasonable for someone to just come in? Which it obviously is. Would you just walk into someone's house without permission? No of course not, because it's a massively unreasonable thing to do.

Sorry you've hit a hot button topic on here OP. Of course YANBU, as you'd be told by anyone with the ability to think rather than just jump onto their favourite topic to scream about.

Edited

I wouldn’t just blame our reading skills, it’s on OP as well how she worded the question.
People said : He was wrong but the only way to prevent strangers coming to your house uninvited was to lock the door.

If she didn’t want to know about ways how to avoid this she should have made it clear in her OP.

I think everyone realised the point of the post, but in this day and age It is incredible that some are still so naive and trusting as to think it’s ok to leave their property unsecured and give carte blanche to some, yet complain that others have violated their privacy!

Her privacy has been violated though, regardless of how much you think she deserves it. Are you not very bright?

Attempted to jeopardise his job? Are you serious?

Yes, I love rurally - a tiny village without crime.

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?
No i wouldn't. Which is why I lock my doors.

Of course the alternative is not to buy goods online so you won't get delivery drivers, however your neighbour might and the delivery driver could put your neighbours parcels in your home because your neighbour isn't home 😱

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 22:06

Arcticrival · 25/03/2025 21:26

I smiled at your post. We are exactly the same in our village. If someone arrives to do door to door selling its immediately put up on the local fb page 🤣

You said at (21.26) that things are exactly the same in your village... People come selling door to door... But half an hour later said you live in a really remote 'arse end of nowhere' scottish croft type of place - with no neighbours for MILES!

At 21.55 you said

I wouldnt leave my door unlocked if I lived in a village either.

Imagine those scottish crofts with no neighbours for Miles. We are a Bit like that.

So which is it? Or did you move from the village (with neighbours, and door to door salesmen,) to the 'arse end of nowhere' (with no neighbours for miles) in the space of half an hour? 😂

Bignanna · 25/03/2025 22:07

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:22

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

Unbelievable

Wildflowers99 · 25/03/2025 22:07

Someone did that when we were kids, our Doberman savaged them 😳

Ineedascooter · 25/03/2025 22:08

My point is that no-one should ever enter a private residence!! This is not ok.

Of course its not ok. But if its not locked people will let themselves in. If you dont like it lock your door. Problem solved.

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 25/03/2025 22:09

If it’s common in your area to have the doors unlocked, maybe that’s why he thought it’s okay to let himself in? I assume he does that in other houses he delivers too as well.

Just lock the door.

Tell me you don’t live in London without telling me you don’t live in London 😂 I lock double lock the front door after me when I get inside and back doors are locked at all times unless I’ve got the French doors open in the summer. None of our windows open beyond an extender apart from on the second floor and even then I wouldn’t leave them open if I went out. It’s another world!

You don’t need to live in London. There is a whole wide world beyond the M25 full of normal people who sensibly keep their doors locked. If you don’t want opportunist thieves or random folks walking in, that’s what you do.

If you aren’t arsed, or have some 1950s twee ideal that your village couldn’t possibly have a single wrong ‘un passing by, then you take the risk and consequences of your intransigence and naivety.

And stupidity, quite frankly. How big a deal is it to lock your door really? It’s not.

Arcticrival · 25/03/2025 22:09

@batchcookbabe

Ffs you're like a dog with a bone 🤣

I live in the arse end of nowhere in a farm in a field with no. neigbours.

The village I refer to is the nearest village SEVERAL MILES AWAY where some of my friends live and they also leave their doors open. But if I lived in that said village I don't think I woukd.

Happy now ?😱

PuppyMonkey · 25/03/2025 22:09

This thread has turned into a new version of the Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

”I live in the sticks and I never lock the door.”

”I live more in the sticks than you and I leave my keys in the lock on the outside at all times.”

”I live so in the sticks I haven’t even got a door.”

And you tell the young folk on MN that, they don’t believe you. Grin

Bright enough to see the OP is incredibly naive and unrealistic! How can she complain about her privacy being violated when it’s ok for the postie to enter uninvited? I wouldn’t trust anyone 100%! I also value my privacy. The fact that she knows the postie and not the delivery driver is not the point.

MagicalMystical · 25/03/2025 22:14

I totally agree with you, @Wineatfiveisfine - he should not have come in.

People saying you should lock your door is like saying women need to cover up so men don’t stare (or much worse).

He's the one in the wrong.

Naive?
I have security cameras at the back, side and front of my home.
I can't secure the passageway round the side of the house because theoretically my neighbour has right of access round my house to their back garden, although they never use it.
My back door is over looked by multiple other houses.
I know the neighbourhood I live in - which you don't.
I'm not carrying a key with me every time I go out to the wheelie bin, feed the birds, hang the washing out, do some gardening etc etc.
If I think there are strangers about, or if I'm going upstairs I lock the door.
There is nothing naive about it. I'm using my judgement.
But I must admit that after today I might lock up the backdoor for the night much earlier in the evening than I have been in the habit of doing.

I know right. Such a load of old drivel isn't it?

Some people even live in a village with neighbours, and door to door salesmen, in a plot of land that MILES from any neighbours. 😂

RampantIvy · 25/03/2025 22:18

The farmers round here are struggling with farm thefts right now.

Being near 2 county borders we also have issues with county lines.

Rural living is low crime, not crime free.

I disagree with comparisons between taking sensible measures to secure your home and rape victims. It is not the same at all.

Just lock the door.

If it’s common knowledge the postie lets himself in that area, then other delivery drivers will think they can too! The OP can hardly complain!

Fanacapan · 25/03/2025 22:22

I’ve had this! Amazon driver opened the door and chucked the parcel into the porch, which wouldn’t have been so bad but he didn’t shut the door behind him.

MasterBeth · 25/03/2025 22:22

Yeah, well done.

And your judgement has led to some man being able to walk into your home uninvited.

LoveFridaynight · 25/03/2025 22:24

You shouldn't have to but it's a sad fact that nowadays you do have to lock your door.
The delivery guy was really out of order and I can't believe it's a common occurrence. They'll do it to the wrong person one day.
