Delivery driver let himself into my house

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 19:53

I WFH. A delivery driver knocked quite loudly on my door a few days ago. I got to my hallway within 10 seconds to find a very tall man in my hallway setting the delivery down on a table and taking a photo, as proof of delivery.

He said “hello, delivery”. I was too shocked to form a cordial response and just said “erm, why are you in my house?” He said “delivery, thanks bye” and off he went.

We’ve raised a complaint with said company - but they’ve said this is a common occurrence (!) and that they will speak to the driver, but it won’t be taken any further.

i was terrified to find a stranger in my house - but having googled, this seems to be a common occurrence!!!! How?!?!?

Yes - our postie does the same - but even he said that this was bang out of order.

My point is that no-one should ever enter a private residence!! This is not ok.

Your postman enters your house to drop your post in?

Carouselfish · 25/03/2025 22:26

Get a beware of dog sign? 1 agree it's not on. I live very rurally and don't lock except at night or if out for more than an hour. And they do drop letters inside. Parcels usually outside unless back door ajar for cat.

SoMauveMonty · 25/03/2025 22:26

As an aside i'm really surprised any delivery driver would do that - unless they'd been given explicit instructions to do so/it was a regular customer - because they don't know what they might find inside. Several mad dogs in my case, who'd probably flatten the poor sod in a furry stampede of 'oooh a hooman!' joy 🙄

There’s such a thing as sensible precautions!

Yeah I know, and I agree with you. I just wanted to respond to everyone saying it’s the OP’s fault when I don’t see it that way. I see it as this man’s fault entirely.

Yep, happened to me recently too. I was in a Zoom meeting and he just opened the front door and put the parcel down.

Totally flabbergasted.

I know right. Such a load of old drivel isn't it?

Some people even live in a village with neighbours, and door to door salesmen, in a plot of land that MILES from any neighbours. 😂

Edited

And they get delivery drivers!

Thank you! Honestly, I do wonder why I post sometimes.

This forum exists for helpful advice - women should be building women up - but some of the responses are from absolute vipers.

Oh the irony ...

Patterncarmen · 25/03/2025 22:39

He shouldn’t have done that, but I admit I am in a very rural isolated area with a house that is hard to find, and my front door is unlocked when I’m home. The postie delivers the mail to a window ledge inside my porch, and the delivery people leave boxes there to keep them out of the rain. But the difference is I give them permission to do this.

Bippityboppitybooo · 25/03/2025 22:45

@Wineatfiveisfine I have a follow up. If you leave your door unlocked while wfh, and your postman at least has permission to enter to deliver without knocking, does this mean you are locking the bathroom every time you need a wee? Fellow wfh woman here who does not lock the bathroom door, but has a self locking front door.

But I’m at home - I WFH - no-one should enter your property without permission!

The postie does?.

It's another world, isn't it?

PigletJohn · 25/03/2025 23:02

I’ve never lived in a house in England that didn’t automatically lock when you close the front door.

Admittedly I’ve never lived in a village but I can’t imagine not locking my front door even if it’s to keep the rain and wind out

It is quite common for plastic doors to uave a handle on the outside that enables anybody to open the door unless the householder has actually locked it.

This is very conven8ent for burglars.

Not something I approve of.

The lock type can be altered but some people won't because they think they might get locked out.

AlpacaMittens · 25/03/2025 23:03

Maray1967 · 25/03/2025 20:27

No one is disputing that - but try telling that to your insurance company when you are burgled. They won’t pay out if your doors are not locked !!!

What if she explains she shouldn't have to lock?

nnnwnw · 25/03/2025 23:10

If your door is unlocked, then I think that appears to be signalling to delivery people that it is OK to open it and put stuff inside. You may not like that or agree with it, but that has been demonstrated to be the case. You need to accept this and take action accordingly - either accept them walking in, or lock the door. You can argue that they shouldn't walk in, but they do. So you need to decide what to do now.

Yeah coz THAT will work! 🙄 Insurance companies pay out all the time for people who were robbed, because they couldn't be bothered to lock their door, and say 'I live rurally and I shouldn't HAVE to lock the door!'

Give me strength! FFS! 😖

Carpedimum · 25/03/2025 23:17

This happened to us - my son ‘caught’ the guy and we wondered if it was him having a look what was in reach because lots of people have hallways with a place for keys, wallet / purse etc. The guy just put the parcel down and left. We put the chain on now.

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:09

No - we live in a village, and have done for a long time and have never had this issue.

i shouldn’t have to lock my door. Delivery drivers should not even attempt to open and trespass on private property.

"I shouldn't have to lock my door"

😂😂😂

Hermyknee · 25/03/2025 23:20

BatchCookBabe · 25/03/2025 21:46

Wrong. I DO live in the arse end of nowhere, and you sound hilariously naive and deluded.

You seriously think you will never EVER get robbed or broken into or attacked because you live in the 'arse end of nowhere?'

Hilarious, but also terrifying. Good luck! (You will need it!)

Edited

If you live in the arse end of nowhere, a locked door isn’t going to stop anyone robbing you or attacking you. At most, if you are in, it may give you a few seconds to raise the alarm. But, who is going to come to your aid? Hilariously naive.

Not while you’re inside the house!

Cottesloe · 25/03/2025 23:24

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:48

Attempted to jeopardise his job? Are you serious?

Yes, I love rurally - a tiny village without crime.

Would you accept a stranger walking into your home, without permission?

No, but I wouldn't leave my door unlocked either.
Maybe the delivery driver does this with other neighbours and they like it?

DBD1975 · 25/03/2025 23:34

Cannot believe in this day and age people do not lock their doors when at home. No the delivery driver should not have let himself in and no excuse for him doing so but I won't even answer the door when home alone without knowing who is on the other side.
I cannot comprehend people who don't lock their doors.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/03/2025 23:36

Because nutters never live in villages 🤣

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 25/03/2025 23:47

Wineatfiveisfine · 25/03/2025 20:22

We don’t have any crime in our area at all - 0%

I totally agree with you on the delivery driver entering your house, and I'd be a bit dumbfounded too.

I live in a very nice area too, and I think you are naive to think locking your front door isn't a good idea as suggested by PPs. Very nice areas are probably the target of opportunistic burglars, deprived areas not so much.
