Is it cheap not to cater?

it’s a significant birthday and a function room is being hired out 4-6pm for around 40 guests then afterwards carrying on in nearby (nice) pubs. The function room place serves food as do a few nearby pubs.

Does the event need catered (a buffet)?

Yes - YABU
No - YANBU

It’ll be carrying on at 5am. I’d put money on it.

And I commented that you indeed didn't stay out till the early hours like you so confidently said you would!

OP- look at your own comprehension of what you said in your earlier post!

I never said that. I said that it would continue until the early hours.

You explicitly said it would carry on until 5am 😅

caringcarer · 30/03/2025 15:27

People need to eat before going on a pub crawl.

But not with me there. It was still going on when I left. This really isn’t hard.

Yes. It will be carrying on. I didn’t say I’d be there. Fucking hell.

Thank you! Honestly it’s so difficult to have any discussion on this site either because of lack of comprehension or people being so excited about getting to be rude that they don’t read properly.

So the planned pub crawl didn't happen and you didn't stay out till the early hours as predicted either!
Sound like it was a shit great party 😆

Completely shit party. But once the birthday girl was happy, eh?

talkingheadz · 30/03/2025 15:55

Oh dear, it sounds a bit shit really.

JitterbugFairy · 30/03/2025 15:59

Party sounds riveting 🙄🥱

Fancycheese · 30/03/2025 16:01

Yes it is cheap. Sounds like a shit party for a 40th. But people do know what they’re letting themselves in for at least. Like pp have said, surely drop the function room entirely and just meet at a pub.

Itrtttyy · 30/03/2025 16:13

To be clear, it wasn’t shit at all. It was surprisingly good.

Having caught up on this thread I have a few observations:

  1. no wonder so many people on MN are treated like a doormat by their partners. I didn’t realise people convoluted themselves so much to accommodate made up problems for other people. Has no one ever just said “I’m going to this place to celebrate my birthday, I’ll be there at 5 and you’re free to join”?! I didn’t realise my birthday meant I had to poll all my friends of every potential commitment they might have and fine the one 15 minute slot that was convenient to everyone to host a party.
  2. It seems most people here have never done an Otley Run (famous Leeds pub crawl) and it shows. Meet in one place, feed yourself along the way and hit up c 15 pubs from mid afternoon to early morning is de rigeur, usually in fancy dress. Less commonly done by 40 year olds, but not unheard of.
  3. It also seems no one has been for “drinks after work” which usually sees 30+ turn up to a booked space for drinks that they pay for, and then often evolves into a night across multiple venues and feeding yourself
  4. I’m a bit of a picky eater, and so even at catered events assume that I might not be able to eat. It’s so incredibly easy to either eat before an event or figure out where to eat while out of the house. It’s never been a problem.
  5. I cannot believe how rude some people would be to their friends and just sack off a party invite to do something else (get a curry) and poach other invited guests to join them. If you’re friends with the person, surely you want to spend time with them instead of obsessing about eating what you want how you want it.
  6. A Panini is a perfectly acceptable evening meal (cheese and ham toasties are a regular tea at my house). Have a big lunch if you know you’re going to have a light dinner. The world won’t end.

so to answer the OP, yes a bit cheap to not have a buffet, but not catastrophic given people were warned in advance.

justasking111 · 30/03/2025 17:03

Glad it all went smoothly for everyone.

Sosoftandfluffycat · 30/03/2025 17:06

You said you thought it was cheap and when everyone agreed with you, you proceeded to be rude and downright nasty to people. Why start a thread at all when you think everyone else's opinion is beneath you?? Ridiculous
