She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

Sounds like you're projecting. Some people eat more than others, some people eat less than others, some people are satisfied and full with less food, and are OK with half a large takeaway naan bread.

No need to make spiteful little digs against people who aren't big eaters. I mean the odd little 'joke' is OK now and again, as I know some people find it incomprehensible that some people don't eat as much as them, but spiteful jibes like this are just unnecessary.

Some people have eating disorders, and feel bad for eating 'too much' and the teeny tiny jibes constantly spouted on here time and again are just plain nasty, and tedious, and really quite pathetic.

There is no need whatsover to make rude comments about smaller eaters. As I said, you're clearly projecting your food and appetite issues on here. (Like a few others!)

Edited

I would agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that the teeny-tiny jibes have only been made in response to the how on earth could you possibly eat that enormous amount of food jibes.

Personally, I think neither is nice but if you make "what a pig" jibes, you should expect jibes back.

Exactly this….

if you can give it out…..then learn to take it

I don't care what anyone eats.

I find it ridiculous that pointing out (and it wasn't me as I already stated it was irrelevant to this thread) that it's a weird and massive order meant the person had food issues, was a teeny tiny eater or whatever. That is bollocks.

You don't care what anyone eats? I thought you ran a successful weight loss programme?
🤔confused

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 23/03/2025 14:41

I don't think they are teeny-tinies. I think they'd like to be...

RampantIvy · 23/03/2025 13:56

@Bitofanchange you are very defensive. Are you a big eater?

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe we often eat curry leftovers, but I would chuck the rice, and reaheated naan isn't very nice.

Not at all relevant to the thread but if you wet the naan and then put it under the grill it's nice. Not as nice as fresh but much better than just reheated.

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 14:45

Let's break it down shall we.

The guest's food cost more. It's fair to assume the guest ordered one of the mains plus rice and TWO naans. So even if she assumed she was being treated she ordered more than a meal. Which is pretty rude.

When this was queried posters jumped on the bandwagon with the competitive undereating jibes and astonishingly claiming that this is NOT a large order and thinking it is suggests an eating disorder. It's nothing to do with appetite. It's a huge meal for anyone.

Who? I've stated already I'm not teeny tiny nor am I a teeny tiny eater. A teeny tiny eater would not be ordering Indian takeout full stop.

I'm really not interested. This is my last post to you as you're not able to take a hint. Nobody wants your 'diet' advice, you've been asked to stop and you won't. That's up to you but I don't owe you my precious chatting-shit time.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 23/03/2025 14:48

All I want to know is... did the friend pay up?

Great. I wasn't offering any diet advice. Be big, be small, be teeny tiny, be massive, be whatever you want. But don't demand that everyone who doesn't accept your absolute delusion has issues.

Surely you’ve got some calories to count this afternoon?

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 14:53

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 14:26

I haven't made any assumptions about posters.

I'm saying it's not normal oor appropriate to order multiple sides. Even if the guest assumed she was being treated she should not have done this. Similarly to how I wouldnt order the most expensive whiskey or steak on the menu if I was being taken out.

But then people started arguing that saying that's a lot of food indicated a teeny tiny eater, food issues, competitive under eating and loads of other bollocks. That is totally normal so long as it's not all the time.

Its utterly bananas to not realise that's a weird order of food, like getting a spare desert or pizza with your three course meal.

I think your original comment is getting lost though as it comes across more preachy with each post. Yes certainly if you're making the assumption that someone else is paying then ‘filling your boots’ is totally wrong, but that is not necessarily just a portion size issue but a cost per item issue (you could order a modest sized lobster dish which costs a small fortune).

Just piss off and lick your lettuce

If I could lick my own lettuce I’d never leave the house…

😂😂😂

BigHeadBertha · 23/03/2025 14:59

Her reply sounds like more fun and games, doesn't it? I'd say, "In my account would be great, thanks." Then move on. It's not worth more aggravation when you probably won't get the money back anyway.

She sounds like a total flake. Who would do this to a friend just to get a free takeout meal, especially when free dinner was offered anyway? Did she really think you wouldn't get it?

You might want to check your purse, home and accounts to be sure she didn't help herself to anything else.

ItsaWarmWindfromtheWest · 23/03/2025 13:21

Nope. You live in a different world.

Narnia world.

The difference in cost would be 3 or 4 fold.

How is that not understandable?

Umm, did you mean 'naania' world? The naans are plentiful there.

susiedaisy1912 · 23/03/2025 15:08

Keep us updated op. Don’t let her get away with not paying.

Oh dear, she'll have to go into the branch then won't she, like it's the 20th century.

By the way, if she can save her card details to the Just Eat app, she can do online banking.

This. Who doesn’t have at least one of online banking, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay ? I’m old and I’ve got 3 of those.

Stop normalising behaviours that are contributing to the obesity endemic.

It reminds me of smokers who say 'maybe' smoking is bad for people but...

You’re quite getting on my nerves now.

I thought people were saying it’s not a large order for the price, rather than just a large order.

Yes this is what I thought as well, surely everyone has a cashpoint near then within walking distance

Especially as so many branches have now closed. Me thinks she is full of BS. Next thing she’ll say she’s lost her chequebook.

As I said earlier, I have had this experience when someone's invited me to dinner and when I arrived they've said they're ordering in. It's always been either explicitly said or implicitly understood that it's their treat, just like if they cooked it would also be their 'treat' – I can't imagine someone inviting me for dinner and then asking me to pay for part of the food shopping, and this isn't really any different. However, as I also said, this is always made very clear in my experience, which is the difference here and why I think this person was a cheeky fucker.

The difference here is that the host wasn't the one who suggested the takeaway.

Personally if I had been invited round to someone's house and they had offered to cook me dinner, I wouldn't suggest a takeaway in the first place. It sounds like you're snubbing the host's cooking.

Suggesting a takeaway when you're the guest and then expecting the host to "treat" you to £30 worth of Indian food when they'd planned to serve you spaghetti carbonara at a couple of quid a serving is doubly rude.

Pretending that her app wasn't working just shows that it was premeditated. She could have just called an Indian takeaway and used her card to pay. Surely that's what someone so technophobic that they "don't do online banking" would do anyway? (And it would almost certainly be cheaper than using Just Eat or Deliveroo anyway. We discovered that our favourite takeaway became 20€ cheaper ordering it directly from the restaurant and picking it up ourselves.)

ScarlettOYara · 23/03/2025 15:29

If she offers you cash, check it's not old £5 notes that are no longer legal tender.
