To ask which current singers have the voices to match Elton John, George Michael & Freddie Mercury?

Random playlist last night, Elton John & George Michael - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me from 1991. The duet is amazing, the power in their voices. Got to add Freddie in the same (or better) category of voice, obviously. Asked my partner who today has the voice that will still make you say wow! in 30 years time? He said the music industry has changed, the ‘stars’ go through too fast now. I can recognise the talent of Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran and others, but where are those really powerful voices?

YANBU - no one can match them!

Sam Ryder is too lovely for words; he's honestly like a labrador in human form. SO positive, humble and thankful...

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 21/03/2025 21:22

I'm a huge Coldplay fan but Chris Martin's voice can be very off key live especially if like now they're overdoing the touring. When he's on it though, he's ON IT and can sound truly beautiful. My DC are getting me into modern country - Morgan Wallen, Chris Stapleton, Post Malone, And I love Teddy Swims.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 21/03/2025 21:27

Noah Sebastian from Bad Omens has absolutely amazing range. If he had gone 'pop' instead I think he would be very famous.

Oh you forgot Whitney .

She doesn’t sing….she shouts!

lizzyBennet08 · 21/03/2025 13:30

Hozier surely

only correct answer!

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 21/03/2025 22:03

Hozier and Teddy Swims, and Dua Lipa for the girls

Devianinc · 21/03/2025 22:45

Arianna grande is unbelievable talented and can mimic any voice perfectly. It’s amazingly freakish but something onto its own.

Pinkissmart · 21/03/2025 23:06

Zach Bryan has an amazing voice

Pinkissmart · 21/03/2025 23:07

And Post Malone

I agree. But George Michael on the other hand.... He had it all, a voice that stops you in your tracks, a song-writing gift, charisma and sex appeal. What a pity he was gay (and dead).

And he had a very charitable nature. How about Alison Moyet? Saw her live this week and her voice is better than back in the 80s and she doesn’t sit on her laurels, releasing new tracks and recasting old ones.

RobertaFirmino · 21/03/2025 23:18

There's a fantastic American singer called Emily Braden and she has the best voice I've heard in years. Here she is if anyone fancies a listen:

Yes, she's great. i saw her live when I worked at the Royal Festival Hall in London. She does a version of a song by Purcell which is wonderful. 'Remember Me' I think it's called. And yes, George had a very charitable nature, plus a sense of humour.

Tom Chaplin from Keane, Kelly Jones of Stereophonics and Tom Smith from Editors all have amazing live vocals

JustSawJohnny · 22/03/2025 00:46

I'm not a fan of Elton's voice. To me he's more of a songwriter (not that I like his songs. Or George Michael's, to be honest but he did have a lovely voice).

There are loads of incredible singers at the moment - Sam Ryder, Teddy Swims, Ed Sheeran has a better voice than Elton, IMO. Again, I don't really 'like' any of them but their voices are good.

Raye, Ariana, Adele.

Loads, if you really think about it.

Carrie Underwood has an amazing voice. Great lyrics to her songs as well!

Wasn't she the Jesus Take the Wheel woman? So cringe 😂

She can sing though, for sure.

Massive Trump fan tho, apparently. Again with the cringe.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/03/2025 01:03

Yungblud. His voice is incredible.

dottiedodah · 22/03/2025 05:17

Nina takes a lot of beating. So emotional and earthy .(very modest too, used to bring her things in 2 tesco bags to rehearsals apparently I) modern day.billie Irish beating out 007.theme tune. Reminiscent of Shirley bassey.Sam Smith has a good voice

FightingFish · 22/03/2025 05:35

I can’t think of any male voices that are in that league, they must be out there somewhere just not currently popular. Was listening to Otis Redding, these arms of mine, on the radio early. Stunning voice that actually moves you. Don’t know if a current equivalent exists.

Freddie Mercury had an amazing voice but the other two! Come on - nothing special voice wise at all.

Tereseta · 22/03/2025 07:37

David Draiman of disturbed has the most amazing powerful voice with great range. He is amazing live.

FreddoSwaggins · 22/03/2025 08:28

Is Sam Ryder the person who is a perpetual victim, filmed themselves crying on their step during lockdown and there was a bit of hoo har about inappropriate outfits a while back?

Because I'm starting to think I might have thought two people were the same person. Not for the first time! That'll be the consequences of being stuck in the 90s music wise and only being on the periphery of knowledge of artist today.

Which I think is also the reason people think no artist matches [insert name of artist of decades ago]. There's no way there aren't amazing young singers. Looked up Sam Ryder- he's very good. Also agree the type of songs elicit different performance.

That's Sam smith

FatLarrysBanned · 22/03/2025 11:36

@FreddoSwaggins

No Sam Ryder spent lock down sharing songs he was covering on SM in his garden shed and cheered a lot of us up in very dark times.

He's most likely to be found wearing a magnificent crocheted waistcoat eating a vegan burger/surfing, not snotting all over tik tok.

Are you thinking of Sam Smith who hasn't quite decided if they are she/he/they/them wearing lots of latex?
