AIBU to continue turning in the school gate?

NortonBuns · 19/03/2025 14:18

I drive my dd to school everyday and once I drop her off I turn around and drive home. I approach the back gate of the school and use this entrance to turn my car round so I can head back home.
The school have now put up a sign saying keep our children safe, no stopping, dropping off or turning in the entrance.
So where am I supposed to turn around? If I carry on I reach the front gate which is busier and has the busses. If I turn before I reach the back entrance I am doing a three point turn in busy school run traffic with lots of children walking and cycling.
So AIBU to say I am safest turning in the large double gate and ignoring the new sign?

Assuming you and your child have no disabilities then I'd say walk to school!!

It’s rural and they live 6 miles away.

Fair enough find a parking spot 5 mins away from school then walk.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/03/2025 20:42

The sensible approach would be to contact the school (ideally as a group of parents if most do as you do) and ask what the safest options might be given the constraints of the road?

I understand they don't necessarily want people turning/blocking business access but if there really is no other alternative with the road layout then they're going to have a lot of people dropping children off late.

H112 · 20/03/2025 20:43

Tell her to walk

Ok so to answer some of your questions;

All the other parents do this, it is literally a queue of cars waiting to turn around to avoid carrying on towards the main school gate where busses are dropping off.

The school is about two miles up a straight road full of high school children walking and cycling to the school. No side roads to drop off or turn around.

I really am a very considerate driver, would never block drives, stop on yellow lines or zebra crossings. I just don’t know what the safe alternative is.

Gross. What about all the children breathing these fumes? Asma, lungs developing wrong, dementia. All caused by fumes.

Numerous unnecessary sarcasm within some of these responses
Being's none of us have seen the school premises & the part where this Mum's mentioned there's now a sign informing parents not to use this part anymore, we don't have a right to imply she's being awkward or self seeking
Maybe it does hold potential risks, but equally we don't know whether the power & control of some in authority here, has previously been known to abuse their power
Either way, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, so please try to be kind & keep an open mind, especially in concerns with fellow, loving parents
Even when you presume they might be wrong - Kindness is The Highest Form Of Wisdom

There are no side roads, why post if you can’t be bothered to read the thread. No matter how early I leave I have to turn around. Either before or after the school, I just think it’s safer before. For what it’s worth the sign went up a week ago and so far everyone has carried on as usual.

I hope the council makes a no stop zone with cameras and fines then as it is the only thing that will deter people like you from endangering others.

Try looking at it this way: One of the many other parents ignoring this sign knocks your daughter down. (hopefully doesn’t happen) Would you be pleased they ignored the safety advice to save time and convenience?

Stop being a twat and take notice of the sign.

Edited

This. With bells on.

I have autism and struggle to picture things. can you make a drawing of your predicament so I can understand

ThriveAT · 20/03/2025 21:28

Nobody cares about this. Think about real struggles that schools (and other people across the world) are going through. First world (entitled ) problems.

RandomWordsThrownTogether · 20/03/2025 21:35

Honestly when I have been in situations like this I drive the wrong direction from home, through busy roads until I reach someplace I can turn around safely! If you put your address into google maps it’ll throw up some alternative routes home for you, it might add on time but better than doing a 3 point turn in a school entrance! When traffic is bad I end up doing a crazy long loop home from dropping my daughter off as there is no way to turn around at peak times!

treesandsun · 20/03/2025 21:37

Yeah you crack on - fuck the kids' safety. As long as you can turn easily.

shehasglasses48 · 20/03/2025 22:06

Park away from the school and walk. A long way away.

Wrongsideofpennines · 20/03/2025 22:16

Continuing to turn where you've been told not to is selfish. And instead of suggesting that you won't stop because other parents won't is selfish too. You're approaching the issue with the attitude that you're going to come up with an excuse for every solution. You have several options:

  • continue past the school and go a different route home
  • drive her to a bus stop that goes to the school
  • look at a map and choose somewhere within walking distance to drop off. If its a residential area with businesses nearby I don't believe there aren't any side streets within walking distance
  • look at a sensible cycle route to school
  • drive her to a friends house and their parent takes them who may not need to turn around
CynthiaRothrock · 20/03/2025 22:25

Really? You ever seen a child get knocked over!? I have right outside of a school gate due to a twat like you who thinks the rules don't apply to them! 🔔🔚

The sign is aimed at YOU.

OonaStubbs · 20/03/2025 22:34

Why not walk your child to school instead?

golemmings · 20/03/2025 22:44

In the county where I live, and the one where I work, living more than 3 miles from school entitled a child to school transport at high school. Is this an option for you?

Flutterbees · 20/03/2025 23:20

I sometime assist with primary drop off at my school and the number of parents who do u-turns in the middle of traffic across a solid white line, on a corner makes my jaw drop. If they continued on down the road, a right hand turn at the end of the road is tricky, but safer than an illegal u-turn in traffic with buses, cars etc. Other parents stop a little down the road and use residents’ driveways to perform a 3 point turn, which drives the locals nuts. The parents could park on a side street and walk their children a very short distance to the school, but that’s far too difficult. OP if there’s a sign prohibiting the manoeuvre then you need to find another way, it can’t be one rule for you and another for everyone else.

17 pages in and OP still doesn’t seem to understand this!

OP - It doesn’t matter whether other posters’ suggestions are feasible or not, a solution needs to be found (by you) that doesn’t involve ignoring the sign specifically telling you to stop doing the thing you want to do.

valentinka31 · 21/03/2025 00:20

park and walk

Wow another entitled knob

grumpypedestrian · 21/03/2025 07:46

There’s a lot of posts here so maybe @NortonBuns didn’t see the repeated queries about being offered school transportation.

vickylou78 · 21/03/2025 07:50

Just park further away from the school and find somewhere else to turn back. Not rocket science.
