BLOODY Tesco wouldn’t deliver my food shop

Thaer · 18/03/2025 14:37

So apparently they now do “think 25” for all deliveries. EVEN for ones with no age restricted products. The young lad who delivered said he couldn’t give me my shopping. I left my bag in DH’s car last night so had no id. Apparently a facetime call with my husband showing my driver’s license wasn’t good enough (I’ve misplaced my passport which is bloody brilliant). I’ll take the compliment as a 32 yo. But how stupid! There was only food in my shop. When he asked I assumed my husband had added on a few beers but no just food. I’m not blaming the delivery boy as he’s just following rules but there is no common sense. I get it if you order cigarettes, alcohol etc. But not veggies and dog food ffs. If I went to the shop and bought the same stuff I would be asked to produce I’d!

RIDICULOUS

That’s ridiculous.

saveforthat · 18/03/2025 14:40

I think this must have been a mistake? When I had to cancel my order last week because I had to go into hospital, they told me would anyone over 18 be in to take the delivery (unless the change was this week).

Josiezu · 18/03/2025 14:40

Eh, I don’t think it should be down the the driver to search through an order list for cigarettes, knives, alcohol etc. it’s easier to just say an adult has to receive the delivery.

I find it stranger that an adult in the UK only has one form of ID.

Surely there is some sort of alert that Tesco could put at the top of each order list to alert the driver to any restricted items. Surely that was the case prior. Would not be hard to do at all.

I only have my driving license. No interest in a passport

My drivers license was left in dh’s car and I have misplaced my passport. We moved into our house just before Christmas and I’ve lost track of it. A heads up would have been nice

As long as they can prove they are over 18. The OP had no I’d, so couldn’t.

Ask 25 means that anyone the staff member thinks could b 25 or younger needs to provide proof they are 18 or over. It doesn’t mean they have to be 25.

Thaer · 18/03/2025 14:45

anyway fair enough you need if for restricted items NOT groceries

But it’s pretty bleeding obvious I am older than 18. Common sense has left the room

The OP has two forms of ID - drivers license & passport. One was in her husband’s car & the other temporarily miss placed. I only have those two as well. Not everyone has travel cards, work id etc.

OP - sounds utterly ridiculous. I hate ordering shopping; did it twice during COVID & never again!

I only have 1 form of ID my provisional driving licence I have no need for a passport.

I only have my passport. If I had a driver's licence I could drive to Tesco and wouldn't need an online shop.

No idea what happened to my birth certificate but I'm not paying for another one.

So that’s the same as the OP then surely? Tesco say someone has to be 18 or over to accept the delivery….OP couldn’t prove she was over 18yo. I mean why they have this rule if no age restriction products I have no idea.

ElbowsUpRising · 18/03/2025 15:12

Work ID won’t count. I remember at the age of 35 being refused alcohol in a weekly shop in Morrisons. I had my NHS midwife ID and tried to appeal to the cashier that you can’t be a midwife at 17yo but she wasn’t having it. I also was doing a £150 shop which again I thought unlikely a 17yo would be doing.

For a long time I had none! I don't drive, I had no intention of travelling so no passport... Proving ID for bank accounts was bloody difficult.

I do now have a passport as I needed to go to Belgium a few years back, but I won't ever travel out of the country again so unless someone comes up with some sort of official ID card, when that lapses I presumably will have no id again!

I don't think it'd be that hard for tills to print an age restricted indicator on the order list/receipt to flag to drivers that the order does contain age restricted items (surprised if that isn't already the case actually).

So what are those of us without ID meant to do, spaff a large chunk of money on a passport we won't use for anything but ID?

toomuchfaff · 18/03/2025 15:18

Put a complaint into the store, and if it is a policy, then shift to another store. Or don't, and be aware the new policy..

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 18/03/2025 15:19

Well, you'd find me strange then. I have no ID. I don't go on foreign holidays, so I don't have a passport and I don't drive, so I don't have a driving licence. It's a pain in the neck, but, I honestly don't have photo ID - I could show my birth certificate but, of course, that's in my maiden name, so not much use, and I could show my wedding licence, but that doesn't come with a photo. I don't think I should have to pay for either a passport or a driver's licence when I would make no use of them, just so that I can prove I am who I say I am.

I don't have any valid ID at the minute. Lost my passport, and I had a provisional licence (live in a city and never bothered learning to drive) which has now expired!

Have I missed a memo? When did it become strange to only have one from of ID, I know people who don't drive and people who either don't have or haven't renewed their passports

I'm absolutely certain they don't have anything strange about them

utterlyfedup2 · 18/03/2025 15:33

Sainsburys also have think 25. My husband is a driver. In your situation, he could have lost his job if he'd given you the delivery without seeing ID in person. Sainsburys do random checks and even have secret shoppers who look under 25 and have 'lost their ID'. It doesn't matter what's in the delivery BTW.

It's a slightly ridiculous policy in that it's up to the driver whether they think you're under 25 but it's there to ensure tesco don't break the law. DH says that he only asks if the customer clearly looks around 17/18 but sometimes its very had to tell and he'd prefer to stay employed.

Those of you without any form of id can get one of these for £18: https://www.citizencard.com/apply-for-a-uk-id-card-online

A provisional drivers licence is £34,

This seems like a reasonable option, but, you need a referee which may or may not be easy.

I’m a 32 yo woman. By no stretch of the imagination do I look anywhere near 17/18

In your opinion.

And you actually have to 'look' over 25 by the policy. I'm just saying what DH says he thinks about when he sees a customer. He's given just 6 minutes a drop for some deliveries, so he'd rather not have to ask for ID unless he really feels it's necessary. Your driver obviously did feel it necessary otherwise he'd not have asked and risked making his whole shift run late.

Complain to tesco though - they're quite responsive if you do it via social media.
