BLOODY Tesco wouldn’t deliver my food shop

So apparently they now do “think 25” for all deliveries. EVEN for ones with no age restricted products. The young lad who delivered said he couldn’t give me my shopping. I left my bag in DH’s car last night so had no id. Apparently a facetime call with my husband showing my driver’s license wasn’t good enough (I’ve misplaced my passport which is bloody brilliant). I’ll take the compliment as a 32 yo. But how stupid! There was only food in my shop. When he asked I assumed my husband had added on a few beers but no just food. I’m not blaming the delivery boy as he’s just following rules but there is no common sense. I get it if you order cigarettes, alcohol etc. But not veggies and dog food ffs. If I went to the shop and bought the same stuff I would be asked to produce I’d!

RIDICULOUS

Where we live there are many persons who have never had either! pensioners mostly.

98% of over 70s in the UK have a photo ID, so hardly “many, many” without.

A complaint for what? Because OP didn’t realise they had an age policy on online orders and doesn’t like it? All supermarkets have this policy, they will only deliver to age 18 plus

That seems crazy as even the government pages say you can use an expired British passport to show you have right to work

I didn't know that! Even more crazy then!

I've been abroad a few times, have no plans to go abroad again, hate flying-I don't need a bloody passport as I am not planning to 'pass' any 'ports' yet somehow to do perfectly normal things like change jobs I apparently can't function without one!

Well that's the price we pay for not having a UK Id card.

I have an Id card for my other nationality and it's really quite useful. I can vote, collect parcels, prescriptions, buy reduced price old aged admission to museums and galleries, travel to neighbouring countries etc. etc.

No one said you need a passport, you do however need photo ID for many things.

Apart from two workplaces-one wouldn't interview me at all, one I had to send the passport so they could see a physical copy.

I do have a passport, It's just not in date.

Both employers would only accept a passport, nothing else.

Fair enough, that's how it works. I am allowed to think It's ridiculous however. Both jobs in education and training, not anything where I'd need to be sent abroad.

I got stuck in traffic and was about 10 minutes late for my Ocado slot and, unfortunately, the driver arrived right at the beginning of the hour. He called me and I explained I was nearly home and would be happy for him to leave the shop in the front garden. He said he would not be able to leave the energy drinks because of the age restriction but he could process those as a return and he left the rest of the shopping on my porch.
Tesco refusing to give a 32 year old woman her food order because she didn’t have ID seems absolutely mad to me.

Well that’s your choice. Photographic proof of identity is a well known requirement for many things, if you choose not to have it then you will find your options limited for many scenarios. It’s not about being sent abroad it’s about proving your identity.
You can’t choose not to have up to date proof of ID and then moan about the consequences.

This seems like a reasonable option, but, you need a referee which may or may not be easy.

You shouldn't need to do that just to buy things with your own money though.

Tesco is a shit company anyway. Go to Waitrose op. Their basics are often cheaper and everything is nicer.

mondaytosunday · 19/03/2025 13:50

Huh. My 17 year old took in a delivery once. And she definitely did not look any older. And now I think of it it would be very unusual for me not to have wine in the order (but can’t actually remember).
Waitrose once left a delivery outside my door as I was running late, but would not leave the alcohol (fair enough).
it’s a good idea to have pics of your passport and drivers license in your phone, irrespective of whether it would have been accepted in this case.
