BLOODY Tesco wouldn’t deliver my food shop

So apparently they now do “think 25” for all deliveries. EVEN for ones with no age restricted products. The young lad who delivered said he couldn’t give me my shopping. I left my bag in DH’s car last night so had no id. Apparently a facetime call with my husband showing my driver’s license wasn’t good enough (I’ve misplaced my passport which is bloody brilliant). I’ll take the compliment as a 32 yo. But how stupid! There was only food in my shop. When he asked I assumed my husband had added on a few beers but no just food. I’m not blaming the delivery boy as he’s just following rules but there is no common sense. I get it if you order cigarettes, alcohol etc. But not veggies and dog food ffs. If I went to the shop and bought the same stuff I would be asked to produce I’d!

RIDICULOUS

I just find it a very odd decision from an adult, there are many, many scenarios beyond driving or travel that require photo ID. Bank accounts, voting, changing jobs, nursery funding, selling a home, renting a home. I mean the list goes on.

I have had all these things since well before all this photo is nonsense came in. Until I received my free bus pass I had no photo id at all. I have done nothing requiring id since the last century, prior to my free bus pass.

Surely there is some sort of alert that Tesco could put at the top of each order list to alert the driver to any restricted items. Surely that was the case prior. Would not be hard to do at all.

Well that's certainly the case on Deliveroo just eat deliveries. The app informs you that is is needed

Coconutter24 · 18/03/2025 18:42

cocoromo · 18/03/2025 18:36

But why tho?? That’s the issue….the policy makes no sense if there are no age restricted items??

A lot of retailers you need to be 18 to shop at for what reason I don’t know. The only things I can think of for Tesco's policy is because to shop with them online you have to be 18 and to possibly cover them incase of any age restricted items, the drivers do know if they have an age restricted item on the delivery note. Which is fine but common sense needs to come in as well if someone is clearly over 18 (or 25) then it is a bit silly

Right now, in the modern world you need photo ID to vote in person, sell property, take a tenancy agreement, use government childcare funding, open a bank account with almost any high street bank, change employers, to apply for a passport for a child, this list goes on… this is all factual information, go and attempt to do any of these things with no photo identification and you will not be able to. You not needing to do this very basic list of things isn’t relevant and doesn’t change the fact that they need photo ID.

utterlyfedup2 · 18/03/2025 15:33

Sainsburys also have think 25. My husband is a driver. In your situation, he could have lost his job if he'd given you the delivery without seeing ID in person. Sainsburys do random checks and even have secret shoppers who look under 25 and have 'lost their ID'. It doesn't matter what's in the delivery BTW.

It's a slightly ridiculous policy in that it's up to the driver whether they think you're under 25 but it's there to ensure tesco don't break the law. DH says that he only asks if the customer clearly looks around 17/18 but sometimes its very had to tell and he'd prefer to stay employed.

I was responding to previous posters saying it was contrary to not have photo id. I’ve never needed any, and the only thing I own with my face on it is my bus pass.

You responded to me and you’re incorrectly claiming you don’t currently need a photo ID for all those things.

I know. As I said, it's a ridiculous policy.

Same at ASDA. Challenge 25, if you look under 25 you are asked for ID and if you can't provide any you don't get your shopping! Even if it's just cornflakes!

Along with restricted items, I was told it was due to the transfer of money online. It does say on the receipt that someone 18 or over has to be in to accept the shopping.

The oldest person i've asked for ID turned out to be 40 🤣 and a couple of customers over the years have got really peed off with me when I didn't ask them for ID...they looked a lot older than 25!

Ha ha I remember how upset I was when travelling the US when they stopped asking me for ID! They ID anyone up to 40 most of the time! It was then I realised I had passed my prime!

No I wasn’t. I was claiming that I have not needed these forms of id this century. I therefore couldn’t prove I was over 18 if I was required to by Tesco.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 18/03/2025 15:19

Well, you'd find me strange then. I have no ID. I don't go on foreign holidays, so I don't have a passport and I don't drive, so I don't have a driving licence. It's a pain in the neck, but, I honestly don't have photo ID - I could show my birth certificate but, of course, that's in my maiden name, so not much use, and I could show my wedding licence, but that doesn't come with a photo. I don't think I should have to pay for either a passport or a driver's licence when I would make no use of them, just so that I can prove I am who I say I am.

A complaint for what? Because OP didn’t realise they had an age policy on online orders and doesn’t like it? All supermarkets have this policy, they will only deliver to age 18 plus

That’s simply not true. It’s applies only to restricted items

CountryQueen · 18/03/2025 20:28

The fact you are calling a man with a job and a driving licence a “delivery boy” suggests he is relatively young and new to the job. I suspect he wants to keep it. He is also unlikely to be able to easily tell the difference between a 25 year old and 31 year old woman so is operating on a better safe than sorry basis.

Springbirds · 18/03/2025 20:18

It is true….

All goods must be received by an adult aged 18 years or over. If proof of age is not available, the goods will not be delivered to you.

it isn’t just age related products it’s the whole delivery

Justlurking10 · 18/03/2025 20:34

It has always been the case-I worked as a driver for Asda 10+ years ago and Challenge 25 was a thing then on the whole order whether there was age restricted items or not.

It may be true for Tesco, it’s not true for all supermarkets. Waitrose will deliver to under 18s as long as there are no restricted items included.

You don't need photo id to open a bank account or to get government funding for childcare. It might be harder for a bank account but it is not mandatory to hold photo id. You just have to supply more documents a bit like a DBS check. Same for buying or selling a house, there is a very lengthy guidance on what can be accepted.

This is the childcare funding page of what is required and it does not include photo id.

In your opinion.

And you actually have to 'look' over 25 by the policy. I'm just saying what DH says he thinks about when he sees a customer. He's given just 6 minutes a drop for some deliveries, so he'd rather not have to ask for ID unless he really feels it's necessary. Your driver obviously did feel it necessary otherwise he'd not have asked and risked making his whole shift run late.

Complain to tesco though - they're quite responsive if you do it via social media.

When I worked at sainsburys I always ended up IDing the people who were in their late 30s

You need the ID to use the funding at a nursery, not apply.
Many, many high street banks will not allow you to open an account without photo ID.

I've been refused a job interview because my passport was out of date, and with my current agency they wouldn't accept my out of date passport onto the system, I ended up having to post it to them.
I am sure there's a reason why it isn't me because it has expired, but not one I can currently comprehend.. driving license not acceptable...

SoOxon · 19/03/2025 08:05

Josiezu · 18/03/2025 14:40

Eh, I don’t think it should be down the the driver to search through an order list for cigarettes, knives, alcohol etc. it’s easier to just say an adult has to receive the delivery.

I find it stranger that an adult in the UK only has one form of ID.

Where we live there are many persons who have never had either! pensioners mostly.

That seems crazy as even the government pages say you can use an expired British passport to show you have right to work

Gettingbysomehow · 19/03/2025 08:11

I had a Tesco delivery last night no ID needed.

Fizbosshoes · 19/03/2025 08:26

I bought alcohol free "prosecco" over Christmas, and Tesco still needed a cashier to check I was over 18 (or looked 25 - no id needed! ) when using the self checkout.
Similar products in other supermarkets didn't have that check
(I'm guessing maybe part of the barcode indicated it was from a wines and spirits dept?)
