Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

They are the yobs not her!

AlexandrinaH · 17/03/2025 10:14

😂😂😂

RunLikeTheWild · 17/03/2025 10:16

Maybe if more of the 100 or so flats being affected also threw eggs the actual yobs would stop their antisocial behaviour.

On the meantime, perhaps earplugs would help you sleep a bit better? Get the comfortable ones off Amazon, not the bog standard ones in boots.

HurdyGurdy19 · 17/03/2025 10:18

I wouldn't waste eggs, but I'd suggest a powerful super-soaker filled with food colouring.

Harmless (unless someone has a life threatening allergy to either water or food colouring) but inconvenient to the car driver.

If you could perfect your control of the super-soaker, you could write "wanker" or similar, so that the driver's personal status is known to everyone until they clean it off.

MrsSunshine2b · 17/03/2025 10:19

If a person is so allergic to eggs that merely touching one could lead to death, then by adulthood they should be more than aware not to touch a car that has just been hit by one. It also might be a good idea if you are extremely vulnerable to being killed by a common food stuff not to make a public nuisance of yourself or hang out with other people who do.

TheaBrandt1 · 17/03/2025 10:21

Was about to post the same MrsSunshine.

Live by the sword die by the sword and all that.

SmallFiresBurning · 17/03/2025 10:22

Christ on a bike! I feel like I want a super-soaker now, and I live by very quiet neighbours (cemetery residents). I could use it on the squirrels… 🤔

madamweb · 17/03/2025 09:07

Yabu. My children are both severely allergic to egg and that is not unusual. Contact with egg could kill them.

Not that they would behave like that (I hope!). But you must not view egg or any other food as benign and harmless. It could kill.

A thrown egg at a car isn't going to kill anyone allergic to the protein in eggs.

A family member is severely allergic to pesto /pine nuts to the point of having to carry an epi-pen everywhere but even he can hold a jar of pesto sauce.

@EggVigilante I know eggsactly how you feel, a loitering spot like that is bad.
Even ''Brown noise'' {more effective than white noise} won't drown out the noise made by deep bass or car /people noise...but retaliation would be my concern.

Noise pollution is awful.

Spirallingdownwards · 17/03/2025 10:25

Actually eggs contain something that react badly with car paintwork so if you had hit you may have found yourself open to a claim for criminal damage. I understand your frustration though

HomeBodyClub · 17/03/2025 10:25

This is not behaviour to be applauded.

PrettayGood · 17/03/2025 10:26

Idiotic thing to do in my opinion. Nobody should lash out in anger.

Iheartmysmart · 17/03/2025 10:27

Loving the comments about calling the police. So far they have been completely disinterested in stolen cars and drug dealers in our car park, shrugged off an incident of domestic violence and told me off for reporting a fly tipper who called me a racist whore who needs to die for asking him not to dump rubbish in our bin store. They really aren’t bothered about anti social crime.

Cost neighbour £££££££££££££ when he hit our car with eggs.

Spirallingdownwards · 17/03/2025 10:29

Explaining how eggs can permanently damage car paintwork. You could open yourself up to all sorts of issues including criminal as well as civil liability.

I had kids egg my car once on Halloween thinking they were hilarious!

Lostsadandconfused · 17/03/2025 10:30

You’re massively unreasonable. Plenty of people live with noise at night. They live on busy roads, next to train lines, next to noisy pubs and stadiums. Under flight paths.

They get earplugs. And get some sleep.

I've been hit by an egg before and it's really painful. You could properly damage the bodywork or smash glass - not that they don't deserve it but you could be in a world of pain if they retaliate or go to police. Maybe smash the egg first...

If you can smash the glass of a car with an egg then it isn’t proper glass. Glass in cars is specifically designed to be shatterproof. The replies on this thread 🤦‍♀️😂

Over a TRILLION pounds?

You should have gone to a cheaper garage.

It was very reckless. I would be concerned about retaliation.

Throwing eggs at cars with strangers is quite stupid.

Get a white noise machine, get some ear plugs and try to ignore.

I understand how frustrating it is to have noise like that, but unless it is the same cars repeatedly (so you can take their license and report) there's nothing you can do.

You are very lucky they drive away instead of either damaging your property or trying to get to you.

People doing that at 3am could be drunk, on drugs, gang members or simply volatile people.

So just get some earplugs/white noise and put up with it? I often have similar issues with my neighbours in the summer. It makes my life a misery. Just "try to ignore" is a ridiculous suggestion and almost impossible. Once your sleep has been disturbed by idiots and you are upset/anxious about it - "just ignoring" is really hard to do. With my neighbours Im actually anxious on a sunny Saturday morning even before they've lit the BBQ because I know that 12-16 hours of noise is likely to follow. It can be all day as well. Should I just spend all my daytime hours as well as night with earplugs in just because others want all day/night parties?

Im not advocating lobbing an egg though......... a better suggestion (I think) is to keep a record of the issue (dates, times, issues it causes - anxiety, sleeplessness, distress) and then lobby the police (register the issue anonymously via police 101 online - they will come and have a look on a night when they've got not much else on) and the local council. Its a noise disturbance issue so ultimately complaining to the police and the council is your best bet. Potentially maybe a residents only "gate" could be installed? Restricting access to only residents and visitors.

The allergy aspect wouldn't have occurred to me at all to be honest, because none of my children's allergies are potentially lethal. But I'm actually shocked that people are taking the piss out of a poster who has, quite rightly serious concerns about the risk because her kids could die. She's posted a "hilarious link" to a child actually dying because another kid threw a piece of cheese at him. I'm really not seeing the hilarity that other posters are. Or that it's no big deal if they nearly die, because epi pens exist.

MN never used to be this cunty.

The poster is using false equivalence, their children’s egg allergy has no context in this situation unless they were the ones in the car at 3.30am.

oakleaffy · 17/03/2025 10:43

madamweb · 17/03/2025 09:12

This is indeed an absolute tragedy- This poor young lad should have had an Epi Pen with him at all times.

Anyone with serious life threatening allergies should carry one at all times- as one never knows when it might be needed.

Yes, I think it could escalate (eggscalate?) things.

I sympathise though . Lack of sleep lowers our defences and can make us do daft things. I think it's an understandable although potentially unwise reaction.
