Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

So speaking to them is 'potentially dangerous'

But throwing an egg isn't?

Ok.

anothernameanotherplanet · 17/03/2025 10:45

Water bomb? Or water bomb full of poster paint?

Are you high up enough to chuck it out, shut your window, and retreat before it hits the car?

anyolddinosaur · 17/03/2025 10:46

Concern about damage to care is because the offenders can sue for criminal damage. Civil claim so no jury (a jury would likely let her off) but they would need proof of where it came from. Anyone know if you can get fingerprints off a smashed egg? 😀

Lassango · 17/03/2025 10:47

The only mistake you made was missing your target.

You’re massively unreasonable. Plenty of people live with noise at night. They live on busy roads, next to train lines, next to noisy pubs and stadiums. Under flight paths.

They get earplugs. And get some sleep.

Good grief! There's a bit of a difference though isn't there? Those things are already there. The OP is posting about extremely anti-social behaviour by random yobs in the middle of the night somewhere where they've no business to be.

JeanGenieJean · 17/03/2025 10:58

YANBU. You need to work on perfecting your aim though.
Inconsiderate w⚓️s deserve all they get.

madamweb · 17/03/2025 09:07

Yabu. My children are both severely allergic to egg and that is not unusual. Contact with egg could kill them.

Not that they would behave like that (I hope!). But you must not view egg or any other food as benign and harmless. It could kill.

Then I hope you teach your children not to be so anti social they get eggs lobbed at them.

lifeonmars100 · 17/03/2025 11:00

Until you go through something like this you don't know how awful it is and you don't know how you will react. I have horrific neighbours whose noise and anti-social behaviour drives me to distraction. I have felt rage I did not know I was capable of coursing through my body when they are at their worst. I have ear plugs, I play music, I stay in the front part of my (tiny) house to escape the noise but sometimes I could just scream and cry. Isn't it strange that the person\people who are on the receiving end of nasty behaviour have to moderate how they live rather than the twats that do it.

Improve your aim and if you want to appease the don’t throw eggs brigade get water bombs

I would like to suggest filling the waterbombs with paint.

Redpeach · 17/03/2025 11:01

Has a mix of flour and water been mentioned, to imitate bird poo

BarneyRonson · 17/03/2025 11:04

Good for you. If we all stood up to such anti social behaviour they’d be outnumbered and life would improve.

CoffeeWithHer · 17/03/2025 11:09

I would have thrown a brick - I have lived in a neighborhood like this and honestly the noise and broken sleep will drive you insane with rage. I was younger then so didn’t, but I’m peri now (and due on) so the mood I’m in today I know if I had a brick, I would have lobbed it and come what may.

I now live semi rural - so can spout off about what I would do without fear of being arrested or my flat being targeted 😜 so don’t take my advice 😅

But I hate to say it….you know it’s coming, you’ll need to prep and get some earplugs and start documenting for the council to do something - which seems SO LONG when I’m sure a brick would take care of it 😉

A long time a friend told me that the people opposite them had an incredibly noisy party that was clearly going to go on all night. Her husband was about 6'6 and built to match. He marched across the road, elbowed through the partygoers to where he knew the fusebox was (same layout as their house) and cut off all power. Then marched straight back out again. Must have been wonderfully satisfying.

You did absolutely the right thing. your symbolic gesture is admirable

I agree with others, perfect your aim. Try to be as anonymous as possible. Wear black. And if you succeed in driving them off, a cape.

Many don't understand what living in an area with these loud, thick, antisocial asswipe hooligans is like, or they actually think the police and council will care and try to help (scoff).

These animals only understand one thing. Immediate consequences.

Give them some. Become... Egg Woman.

12345mummy · 17/03/2025 11:48

I think you were well within your rights to throw that egg and it did the job but it’s not a good long term plan!

Have you called the Police? Anti social behaviour to this level is a Police issue and you should contact them every time it happens. They may send patrols past on a regular basis.

There is a restaurant in London called ‘Egg Slut’ - we could get a brand deal / sponsorship as well.

OP - this is all working out rather well 😆

Please stop. 😂 I’m sorry your kids are deathly allergic to eggs. Maybe teach them to not be deeply antisocial. But throwing an egg near a car is not going to cause an allergic reaction. Be serious.
