Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

Well there's some premeditation involved in going to the kitchen and getting an egg to throw so don't claim it was an impulsive act. Eggs could hit innocent bystanders or cause damage to another stationary car. I wouldn't have blamed you for aiming a supersoaker at them though.

GabbySolisX · 17/03/2025 09:33

I wonder if it could crack their windscreen coming down from a height? Maybe have a bucket of slime on standby instead.

CheshireCat1 · 17/03/2025 09:33

Hopefully you don’t live in the USA, I believe eggs have been very expensive lately

anyolddinosaur · 17/03/2025 09:33

How about a chamber pot and it's (liquid) contents next time? Dilute it with water - it's only slightly acidic and unlikely to damage the paint but a bit of extra water will make it even less of a risk.

Yabu. My children are both severely allergic to egg and that is not unusual. Contact with egg could kill them.

Not that they would behave like that (I hope!). But you must not view egg or any other food as benign and harmless. It could kill.

This thread is unintentionally hilarious is it showing early signs of a classic 😂

Kuretake · 17/03/2025 09:35

My flatmate threw an egg at a motorbike after it's faulty alarm woke us up for about the tenth night running. Her aim was amazing from the 3rd floor and got it really good. The owner did start parking elsewhere so worked for us. This was about 30 years ago I haven't thought about it for ages.

Op you were eggstremely proyoked...
See it as a one off..
Or you will become a shadow of your former shell-f...
Sleep deprivation is a killer...
Bit like salmonella!!

GinToBegin · 17/03/2025 09:37

I’m going to hazard a guess that the purse-lipped sanctimony is mainly coming from people who have never been subject to prolonged anti-social behaviour in their own home, enforced insomnia and the effects they can have on a person’s health.

samarrange · 17/03/2025 09:38

Am I the only person reading this who wondered why OP didn't call the police? Surely this is punishable anti-social behaviour, as much as if the loud music was coming from the flat next door. The police might also fancy a chance of giving out some tickets for lack of insurance and also perhaps a few class As in the glove box. Yet we're on page 3 and nobody has mentioned it. Did I miss a change in the law?

Maurepas · 17/03/2025 09:25

I have thrown water in similar circumstances - it also works . Won't waste an egg though! People just don't get how awful they are. This solution was a lot cheaper than our management company hiring 24 hour guards for 2 months.

You throw water at cars? Isn't that just a free car wash?

The police don't respond to noise nuisance complaints. They'll just refer you to environmental health.

blushroses6 · 17/03/2025 09:40

I live in a block of flats and fully understand, the antisocial behaviour is unbelievable and it does get worse as the weather gets warmer. Other peoples darling children come and sit in our stairwell and “hang out” charging their phones, swearing and blasting music. It’s awful. We’ve had kids who live in the houses (with gardens!) nextdoor drag large football nets into our tiny carpark to play presumably encouraged by their parents who don’t want to risk their own windows. It’s madness. Unfortunately, I live on the ground floor so it may be a bit obvious if I threw an egg!

If your allergy is that bad you carry an epipen and in the highly unlikely event that the egg somehow penetrates through the car window you'll be okay.

What innocent bystander is in a car park at 3:30am? Their either part of the problem up to their own stuff

dottydodah · 17/03/2025 09:43

I voted YABU just because it may come back at you is all.Years ago DM worked ( Dad was ill recovering from Heart attack ) Upstairs NDN would have all night parties .And she would have to get up for work ,would be crying .However me and Dad snoozing our heads off, Nothing she could do as they were police! It may be better to tell the council and see if they can do anything .I feel for you and I think they are inconsiderate idiots

Seeline · 17/03/2025 09:43

I was hit by an egg thrown from a passing car when I was a teen. I was just walking along the pavement minding my own business when I suddenly had this massive pain on my forehead right between my eyes. I actually cried out and stopped dead. when me and my family looked round, there was broken egg lying on the pavement next to me. It must have hit me at its strongest point as there wasn't any egg on me, just broke when it fell to the floor. It was really painful, and I had a bruise for days. I was really lucky it wasn't a centimeter or two further each way and didn't actually hit my eyes.

The OP admits it didn't actually hit the car. It could of hit anyone. And yes there is a slim chance that someone nearby, or in the car with teh windows open, cold have a fatal egg allergy. It is a much greater chance that it could do serious harm to someone.

Call the police next time.

Whatdafudge · 17/03/2025 09:44

I mean, I wouldn’t have done it. But I have respect for you for doing it. Lol!

TheaBrandt1 · 17/03/2025 09:45

Some horrible lads threw an egg at me once from a bus on Halloween. Was not very nice.

But having been plagued by hideous neighbours too I endorse your actions op! They deserved it - I did not!

BansheeOfTheSouth · 17/03/2025 09:47

Drain your eggs with a straw. Rinse inside them carefully.

Fill them with a loose setting agar agar jelly (slime) and edible glitter. Or rice starch jelly.
Aim well.

The glitter won't be biodegradable so in the morning make sure to collect it from the pavement/road and pack into the nearest pot hole.

madamweb · 17/03/2025 09:08

It's not funny. Eggs can cause lethal allergic reactions. Finding throwing food funny is grim and ignorant

Please tell me how an egg landing next to a car or on a car could cause an allergic reaction? With closed windows I say this as someone with children that have a nut allergy.

StumbleInTheDebris · 17/03/2025 09:48

I've been hit by an egg before and it's really painful. You could properly damage the bodywork or smash glass - not that they don't deserve it but you could be in a world of pain if they retaliate or go to police. Maybe smash the egg first...

Matronic6 · 17/03/2025 09:49

Fair play to you. We have a similar courtyard that is literally for access for emergency services that suddenly a car started pulling into around 2am and stand there blaring music for about an hour. I and a lot of the other residents were driven mad, called the police who would move them on but kept coming anyway. Think it was night 10 I had filled two water balloons with paint and chucked them at it. Never came back.

SmallFiresBurning · 17/03/2025 09:49

YANBU, however, tomatoes would be cheaper, eggs are a bit pricey these days! 🤗

Largestlegocollectionever · 17/03/2025 09:50

I think it’s brilliant - you should all start doing it to any car that does that!
