Threw an egg at a car in an insomnia fuelled rage. AIBU?

I live in a block of flats with a turning square for cars outside. It’s painted with double yellow lines.

Unfortunately, this space attracts antisocial behaviour, especially during warmer months. We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours.

In the past I’ve just turned over and tried to get back to sleep (often being woken up a few more times that night). This was a real blight on our lives last summer, but we’ve had a bit of respite over the winter. Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbour), I don’t think this is likely to be effective. It’s not always the same cars/people. I’ve thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous). After thinking about it I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it.

Last night I was jolted awake at 3:30 am by loud music booming from a car. I looked out the window and saw it had pulled up just outside.

I had a tough week last week, getting some bad health news, and I have been suffering from a bit of insomnia. My job is always quite full-on, and I was already filled with a fair bit of post-weekend dread about the amount of work I’ve got to get through this week. I thought I’d been coping pretty well, but I do feel a bit stretched thin.

When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg, and lobbed it from the window.

The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.

AIBU to become the egg vigilante?

Yabu. My children are both severely allergic to egg and that is not unusual. Contact with egg could kill them.

Not that they would behave like that (I hope!). But you must not view egg or any other food as benign and harmless. It could kill.

That’s probably what she wanted to do after having had no sleep night after night. You’d better throw a brick next time,op. I suffer from the same and it drives you mad.

Were they outside the OPs home at 3.30am this morning then?!

This is the funniest comment 🤣 The understatement. The "ime".
10/10 comedy work, well done. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Is it funny though?
If your child could die from a common product that they come in contact with every day, you wouldn't be a bit on edge about it? You're aware that people get in and out of their cars and often touch them, aren't you? Have a tiny bit of empathy.

anyolddinosaur · 17/03/2025 09:54

Tomatoes are acidic, probably less damaging than egg though.

thatsalad · 17/03/2025 09:54

YANBU, I almost did the same thing last week at an ice cream van. I was trying to work and the fker would just not stop...

Omg get a grip. You are my hero OP, pity you missed, they deserved it.

I’m going to hazard a guess that the purse-lipped sanctimony is mainly coming from people who have never been subject to prolonged anti-social behaviour in their own home, enforced insomnia and the effects they can have on a person’s health.

Totally agree. It goes on night after night, police do nothing, we are told to monitor and in the end have to end up moving. What the hell should we?

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 17/03/2025 09:47

Please tell me how an egg landing next to a car or on a car could cause an allergic reaction? With closed windows I say this as someone with children that have a nut allergy.

So if someone smeared peanut butter on your car, it wouldn't be an issue because your children never touch the car as they get in?

Blinkingbonkers · 17/03/2025 09:55

I think, as long as they can’t identify which flat you’re in, that it’s a genius plan!

EggVigilante · 17/03/2025 09:55

Just to clear something up, there was no risk of hitting any innocent bystanders. It’s not a car park, so there was plenty of space all around the parked car. My egg just fell slightly short, landing next to the car. I could see the full range of trajectories which the egg could have taken, and at no point were there any innocent bystanders.

I am sorry to cause upset to those with allergies / family members with allergies. I can see that treating something so serious to you so flippantly would be grating.

I have checked that the egg has dispersed and there is no slip hazard. There are some shell fragments, which I didn’t pick up as I didn’t want to out myself to my neighbours. But will pick up some litter later as a bit of commmunity payback.

I hope you've taught them not to lick pavements and road surfaces...

Agapornis · 17/03/2025 09:56

Clearly the people suggesting the police or council have never had this problem. They either do nothing or take months or years. And only if it is a known perpetrator like a neighbour. Not random people in a car park.

Stick to what you're doing.

Team up with neighbours, super soaker are 2 for £15 at Argos.

MojoMoon · 17/03/2025 09:57

Talk to your local councillor.

An individual noisy neighbour is quite difficult because the barrier to forcing them to move is quite high. But noisy cars are much easier for a council to do something about - we had issues and got penguin bollards installed pretty easily on our council estate.
They also blocked the road at one end so there is no cruising around playing music any more - the idiot young men who lease these expensive cars find it less appealing to have to u-turn. Plus it has cut speeding traffic as well.

It was very reckless. I would be concerned about retaliation.

Throwing eggs at cars with strangers is quite stupid.

Get a white noise machine, get some ear plugs and try to ignore.

I understand how frustrating it is to have noise like that, but unless it is the same cars repeatedly (so you can take their license and report) there's nothing you can do.

You are very lucky they drive away instead of either damaging your property or trying to get to you.

People doing that at 3am could be drunk, on drugs, gang members or simply volatile people.

HAHAHAHA 'try to ignore'

well fuck me why hadn't anyone thought of this before. thank you for your notable 2 pence. have you ever 'tried to ignore' loud booming bass and loud music at 3.30am? white noise and 'ignoring' isn't going to cut any ice ffs. the egg did the trick. well done OP.

FluentCyanKoala · 17/03/2025 09:58

The allergy aspect wouldn't have occurred to me at all to be honest, because none of my children's allergies are potentially lethal. But I'm actually shocked that people are taking the piss out of a poster who has, quite rightly serious concerns about the risk because her kids could die. She's posted a "hilarious link" to a child actually dying because another kid threw a piece of cheese at him. I'm really not seeing the hilarity that other posters are. Or that it's no big deal if they nearly die, because epi pens exist.

MN never used to be this cunty.

It was on the outside of the car and if that posters kids are that allergic to eggs and knew an egg had hit the car not difficult to miss, the you clean it.

These comments are getting more batshit every minute

Gosh, no need to be quite so unpleasant.

Yes I have actually had to ignore this exact situation when I lived in a similar place.
Personally as a woman I was scared about retaliation so I DID just ignore.

I did the tips suggested in my original comment and it helped.

It's fine if you wouldn't and OP doesn't want to, but no need to respond in such a way.
You are a bit of a nasty person, aren't you?

I am hardly the only person who told OP the same thing.

I don't blame you. Lack of sleep is awful and those people just don't care
I would be worried about them retaliating although if you live in a block of flats they won't know it was you.
If it's different people each time though I'm not sure what you did will make any difference, unless you are planning on buying a super soaker and using that each time.

I don’t understand why so many posters are concerned about the potential damage to the car. The driver shouldn’t be there in the middle of the night, going out of his way to disturb local residents. If his car gets scratched or some other minor damage, that’s his look out. (And yes, I have assumed the driver is male- on the balance of probabilities, it most likely was.)

Go and buy loads more eggs
