Sausage dog kills baby

crumby23 · 15/03/2025 17:00

Sorry if there’s already a thread on this. Absolutely tragic story today about a sausage dog getting into a small baby’s crib and killing it. The parents knew it was aggressive and had taken precautions to keep the dog separate but on this occasion had forgotten.
Unfortunately the story is bringing out all the XL bully morons who are somehow using this to justify the fact that ‘fighting dogs’ are no greater risk than small dogs. Why are people so stupid?

I'm thinking the very same. Our neighbour breeds Daschunds and he says their instinct is to grip by the throat and very aggressively shake in order to break the neck. And they snarl while they do it. There's no way a Daschund could shake a 8/9/10lb baby in this way and do it silently?

Maybe not silently, but maybe the parents are heavy sleepers/on a different floor. It's plausible to me that they didn't hear it.

@crumblingschools A rule that is broken by most of the dog owning population, seemingly.

Not in this house. Without a seatbelt my idiot would scramble out the window.

Chipsahoy · 15/03/2025 19:12

My Dh managed to pin an adolescent male Doberman by pushing it down by its jaw. Nasty bite as he did it. The dog belonged to a recently deceased relative and attacked a teen relative who sustained some nasty bites. Poor dog. He was just traumatised and sad…
Dh still has the scar to this day. My dh is a big guy and experienced in handling big dogs including those bred for protection..and while he managed to pin the dog, it was a lot of work. A bully breed would be incredibly hard to pin by a large and strong adult. A sausage dog? Totally different situation.

I think there is more to this story.

For one thing - why tether the dog every night? Why not just close the door?

And secondly, how did a Daschund get into a crib? They're horribly overbred, cruelly unhealthy, deformed beasts. They physically cannot jump onto a small step let alone into a crib.

Finally, silent strangulation is not how dogs attack. Ever. It goes completely against everything in their nature. The parents are speaking in the media as if they believe the dog planned this - which is impossible. They simply do not have the brain capacity to forward plan, nor to understand murder and death. If a dog kills it is for food or sport neither of which is ever silent. They have no sense of permanency. A dog can't know that killing a baby means the baby goes away forever.

A dachshund that police said dragged a 6-week-old baby from his playpen and mauled him was put to death yesterday, St. Mary's County animal control officials said, ending a 10-day effort by the breed's admirers to save the tiny dog.

I have a black and white photo from my childhood of our family cat lying on the netting of the carrycot, with me fast asleep beneath her!

Typical!

I almost can’t believe this… sounds .. convenient

À large cat could probably kill a baby if it restricted their airways .

The Queen Mother nearly choked on a fish bone.

Never2many · 15/03/2025 18:18

Yeah. Sausage dog killed a baby my arse. I think we all know what happened.

The dad was the last one to see the baby alive - that’s all I need to know 🤨

Why are people do keen to dismiss the idea that dogs kill?

crumblingschools · 15/03/2025 19:33

Don’t think people are dismissing the idea that dogs can kill, but the facts don’t seem to fit in this case

Yerblues · 15/03/2025 19:35

SmudgeButt · 15/03/2025 18:06

dreadful case obviously but dogs are much less a threat to babies (children, adults) than another human.

What planet are you on?

Zippidydoodah · 15/03/2025 17:13

I just googled it and couldn’t get past the first couple of lines of the article.

just……..no.

i know mumsnet loves dogs but why anyone would have their newborn baby anywhere near a dog just beggars belief.

i just went to a pub for lunch and they had dog dinners (dog fish and chips, anyone?) and treats etc. I think the problem is that people are treating their dogs like they’re a human child when they’re not, they’re a dog.

So true. It's just a ridiculous situation. They're animals, not actually members of the family, and aren't equal to your children.
The number of times I've seen dogs lick babies' faces, or put their heads in the buggy or cot. It's just crazy.

Yeah, that was advised about 60 years ago. Then someone noticed that firstly, this had never happened and secondly, cats usually steer well clear of babies.

My mum used to put a cat net over the pram if she left my brother asleep in it to prevent this.

What do you mean?

MaisieMacabe · 15/03/2025 19:42

That's such a tragic story. How awful for Emily, going to check on the baby and finding the dog with blood on it's mouth and the baby on the floor with head injuries. Horrific.

No one has said that. It's the details of this particular case that do not add up.

The case in Ireland or America?
Or Russia?

greengreyblue · 15/03/2025 19:46

All dogs need to be supervised around babies and children.

Thanks! I'm getting confused with all the stories on the thread. The one in Ireland is awful (not that the others aren't)

They do and as you have found even sausage dogs do too, but the storty as written (and of course it may have been badly translated) doesnt make sense.

Christ I'm sick of people saying this.

Just have a little think about what you're actually saying.
