Sausage dog kills baby

crumby23 · 15/03/2025 17:00

Sorry if there’s already a thread on this. Absolutely tragic story today about a sausage dog getting into a small baby’s crib and killing it. The parents knew it was aggressive and had taken precautions to keep the dog separate but on this occasion had forgotten.
Unfortunately the story is bringing out all the XL bully morons who are somehow using this to justify the fact that ‘fighting dogs’ are no greater risk than small dogs. Why are people so stupid?

OP posts:

dreadful case obviously but dogs are much less a threat to babies (children, adults) than another human.

If I take my dog to a place that is dog friendly, then I am doing nowt wrong.
Scream about it and stomp your feet all you want.

I don't scream and shout I just try to avoid indoor places that are dog friendly because I am now allergic to animal dander.
My point is that in some cases dogs seem to take precedence over people.

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 18:08

It sounds unlikely, it may have been reported incorrectly and the explanation may be more reasonable.

But the upshot is never leave dogs unsupervised with children, young children anyway, that is simple common sense.
The other is that I'd like to know how many other savage sausage dogs have killed in the past year, or say 10 years, or perhaps 30, to give a chance of some decent numbers. I bet you can count them on one hand.

On strangulation, this is unpleasant, but if you’re being strangled you are unable to make noise, your airway is blocked.

Dogs don't tend to grip their "prey" by the throat and silently hold on. They grab by the neck and shake to break the neck not to obstruct the airway. Rarely do they do it silently.

That's just one part of the story which does not add up.

Never2many · 15/03/2025 18:18

Yeah. Sausage dog killed a baby my arse. I think we all know what happened.

I must be very dim, but I don’t know. Please elaborate?

Never2many · 15/03/2025 18:29

Well think about it. A dog can’t strangle a baby. Yes if a dog wanted to attack it could have grabbed baby by the throat, but there’s no way an aggressive dog would silently strangle a baby.

That’s all I’ll say.

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2025 17:39

Yeah, that was advised about 60 years ago. Then someone noticed that firstly, this had never happened and secondly, cats usually steer well clear of babies.

My dad caught our neighbours cat sitting on me in my crib as a baby, apparently I had gone a funny colour, not sure what would have happened had he not gone to check on me…

if true this is clearly awful, but what moron leaves an unsecured known to be aggressive dog unsupervised with an infant. The parents are lying or are neglectful morons who deserve neither children nor dogs.

Sirzy · 15/03/2025 18:39

Dogs and small children are a combination which needs very close supervision. I hate when you see photos of dogs sleeping next to babies and things it’s not fair on either.

we had a Yorkshire terrier growing up and I very clearly remember never being left with it until I was old enough to know how to respect him.

I thought it was advised cats are kept away from babies in case they smother them?

It was - my grandmother was quite paranoid about this when my kids were babies, she insisted we have a net on the bassinet at all times.

Gettingbysomehow · 15/03/2025 18:43

I never left my baby son anywhere near my animals (cats) unsupervised. Never mind dogs. A cat bite could cause sepsis. I kept them all locked in the kitchen at night where their beds and the cat flap were.

They are. People who hate dogs not wanting to see them in dog friendly spaces. They come across as very entitled.

Not quite sure their answer holds up given Dachshunds were bred for badger baiting.

This. There's a dachshund near me that's like a Tasmanian Devil, it's constantly escaping the back garden. It's about the size of my dog's head but that doesn't stop it having a go. I've more than once held my dog still while the dachshund's owners' pre-teen kids run in circles trying to re-capture the little bugger. If dachshunds were the size of an XL bully they'd have been banned years ago.

But yes, never leave a dog of any breed alone with small kids. The dog we had when first DC was born was the softest lump you can imagine who regarded DC as her puppy. I still never left them alone together for a second. If I needed the loo, either DC came with me or DDog came with me, but usually both.

UraniumArthur · 15/03/2025 18:51

I really think there is more to this story. The whole tale of the dog 'silently strangling' the baby is off. Along with the parents choosing to tie it up at night but forgetting. Granted, they treat dogs differently in Siberia (and babies) but even so...

I have a black and white photo from my childhood of our family cat lying on the netting of the carrycot, with me fast asleep beneath her!

Whoarethoseguys · 15/03/2025 17:59

I agree. I don't understand it. The UK has gone crazy over dogs. So many people treat their dogs as children and insist on taking them everywhere with them even restaurants and shops and at the same time they are complaining about children being children.
I had and loved dogs when I was growing up but they were always treated as dogs , not fur babies, not part of the family to be treated like a human child, they were loved and cared for but as an animal and they were never deemed to be as important as people.

This is true. People take their kids everywhere don’t they, ignore them, let them rub their grubby little fingers in the clothes, eat, drink, screech, give them really loud iPads and expect others to tolerate them. There should be adult only spaces. I don’t want to see or hear your child. I don’t want to interact with it on any level.

I have a child but I do not want to deal with them in my child free time. A dog has never interrupted my evening.

FirFoxSake · 15/03/2025 18:58

I am totally against dogs in homes with children, it just can't be worth the risk, you can't ever fully guard your children from them. People say they do, but that would be impossible. Poor baby, RIP.

I'm thinking the very same. Our neighbour breeds Daschunds and he says their instinct is to grip by the throat and very aggressively shake in order to break the neck. And they snarl while they do it. There's no way a Daschund could shake a 8/9/10lb baby in this way and do it silently?

All the treats in the world couldn't have persuaded my 3 cats to go near my 2 kids as babies, way too loud!

TaggieO · 15/03/2025 19:02

Dachshunds are aggressive little sods. Could one bite a baby? Absolutely. Would it silently strangle one? Not a chance. Have you seen how short their legs are?! The parents are clearly lying.

I’ve seen loads of posts from the XL bully supporters on Facebook today trying to use this tragic story to their advantage. I agree with you OP. I wouldn’t trust any dog with a child but it doesn’t change the fact that XL bully’s are dangerous and unpredictable and have killed loads more people (adults as well as children) than sausage dogs. Some people either just don’t want to face up to the truth or they are thick.

Is this the case in Russia?

Parents were so concerned about the dogs aggression they took it to be euthanised but the vet refused because the animal was healthy. They then "forgot" to tie the dog up for the night. The dog, a dachshund, apparently jumped into the cot and "silently strangled the baby with it's jaws"? The baby apparently didn't make a sound and the parents slept through the whole incident.

It's horrific but I'm not convinced by the parents version of events.

My exact thoughts it’s all so bizarre.

our kids were amazing sleepers at 1 month they were still waking every 2-4 hours to feed.
How are you sleeping through the night at discovering it at 7am???

they didn’t rehome it or give it to a rescue. Bizarre.
they forgot to tie it up.
they didn’t close any doors.
their baby was left in a basinette on the floor.

No culture puts babies on floors in case you stand on them
dachshunds have crap backs so are hardly jumping to great heights…

your child died and you didn’t hear them.

just no…
as a mother i was constantly awake as every time sound my babies made woke me up… it was like your are biologically programmed,
Amy mother will say the same.
even now they are a floor away and ages 3 and 1 I’m like “wait… is that the baby???” At 2am on a Wednesday

it strangled the baby by the neck…. Hmmm no.
any dog owner will tell you this is BS. Dogs don’t hunt pray that way

This story is not the full story. no way…

23 April 2024
A mother-of-two said her "life has been ruined" after being attacked by a friend's dog.
Kelly Allen, 45, from Swansea, had part of her cheek ripped off by the tiny dachshund, who then began eating it in front of her.
Ms Allen needed five-and-a-half hours of plastic surgery and more than 40 stitches to treat the open wound on her face.
The dachshund, also known as a "sausage dog", was removed by police and later destroyed.
