Hi I've had a lodger for 2 months now and have caught him coming out of my bedroom his excuse was to check on my cat.my cats not well and he sleeps in my bedroom.my point is this is not the first time he been in my room and I have told him before it's my room please don't go in my room you don't have permission. The other day I came back from work and caught him coming out of my room again I was fuming and told him 1 more time and your out I have installed a camera today and I'm not telling him.if he did it again can I evict him same day or do I hsve to give him 28 days notice.i don't think he's all there. There was a time I was getting undressed and he poked his head around the door because he wasn't sure if I was in or not but my room is my privacy and he seems to forget what I told him

Cannot understand why a single female would EVER have a male lodger.

The first time I’d caught him coming out of my bedroom I’d have given him 24 hours to leave. How can you possibly sleep when you know he’s liable to come into your room?

There are absolutely no excuses for a lodger going into their LL’s bedroom and he was either looking for valuables or up to something pervy.

He needs to go this weekend. Can you get a male friend to come round and sleep on the sofa tonight while the lodger packs his bags?

You need to give a reasonable amount of notice, which normally means the length of the rental payment period. So if he pays weekly them you need to give a week's notice.

No, you can't kick him out immediately, unless it's something you could call the police for. Can you install a temporary lock?

Hope your cat feels better soon.

Bollocks. He has fk all rights and he’s made her fear for her safety. She needs to kick him out immediately. Screw his ‘rights’. He hasn’t got a leg to stand on.

I've got my knephew coming tonight to stay all weekend to make sure he's gone

Great. Good luck to both you & your cat.

rockchic65 · 14/03/2025 18:25

There's only my camera in there that my daughter installed yesterday it's well hidden but you can see all my bedroom so far it's only my cat that I can see coming in and out

He's definitely going through your knickers drawers

Out!

YourWinter · 14/03/2025 18:30

Check your WiFi and Bluetooth for any devices you don’t recognise, and change your WiFi password. Well done for giving him his marching orders, and I hope your cat is happier without the lodger there too.

rockchic65 · 14/03/2025 18:35

My knephew is coming soon so I won't be alone he's going to ask for the keys back tonight and remind him out by 10

Why would a woman alone pick a male lodger ? ?

ThinWomansBrain · 14/03/2025 18:39

why on earth haven't you told him to pack and leave already?
he should only need telling once, not repeated 'warnings'
I think the normal advice is the notice period should be the same as the period that they pay rent for - eg - pay weekly, week's notice, pay monthly a moths notice. but when he continually invades your privacy after being told repeatedly, that can go out of the window. (as can he and his stuff😊)

Seriously, get rid, change the locks, check for any hidden cameras and missing valuables.
If he asks for a reference for future digs, give a full and honest one.
Sounds like an unsavoury creep.

Itiswhysofew · 14/03/2025 18:44

He's not taking any notice of you. Wouldn't you just tell him to leave anyway, as he's making you uneasy in your home?

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/03/2025 18:50

For the people who haven’t read the OP’s updates, she’s given him until 10am tomorrow & her nephew is staying over to help.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/03/2025 18:55

Glad you’re getting him out

Probably been in your washing basket masturbating

rockchic65 · 14/03/2025 19:47

He didn't take it well as he got bit angry saying I should give him months notice. As for him going into my room without permission there is no reason for him to go in there anyway he's definitely going tomoro my locks have been changed by my knephew and ĥe got the keys back for me

I saw your Nephew Is staying over the weekend, hopefully the lodger just leaves without hassle.

DivorcedMumOfAdults · 14/03/2025 20:12

I would get rid as soon as legally possible. In U.K. in your own home I don’t think you have to give reason or much notice but obviously check .
Before getting another lodger I would invest in a lock on your bedroom door

TheBewleySisters · 14/03/2025 20:20

So good that you had the support of your Nephew.

Cantbelieveit888 · 14/03/2025 20:34

There is no K in nephew

Aww. I was kind of enjoying it 😂

I was pronouncing the K in my head.

Slobberchops1 · 14/03/2025 20:48

Why do you keep spelling nephew with a K?

Ghouella · 14/03/2025 20:52

He's not gone in there to check on your cat. That's ridiculous, an obvious lie. He's lied to you because he doesn't want you to know the real reason eg he's rummaging through your drawers for cash, sniffing your knickers, trying on your clothes, installing a hidden cameras etc etc. There's a reason he was in there. You don't need to know what it is - it's got to be bad or he'd have shared it with you. I'd kick him out without notice, personally.

Sorry replied before I read the full thread, sounds like you've a good plan for the weekend. You've nothing to feel guilty about. He's invalidated any rights to a notice period by being a creep and liar.

lily219 · 14/03/2025 20:57

Get rid of him immediately. That's dreadful behaviour and you don't have to put up with it.

alexdgr8 · 14/03/2025 21:00

Slobberchops1 · 14/03/2025 20:48

Why do you keep spelling nephew with a K?

Because she's been traumatised by a knobhead lodger.

And by the way this is not Pedants Corner.
Commenting on SPAG anywhere else is bad form.
Leave her alone.
