Day trips alone?

I’m interested in going to see a historical town, including museums. It’s 2 hrs from mine, I have no one who would be interested in going? I’ve got a family, I’ve got a few friends but out of my friends I doubt any of them would want to go. One would go, but she has Financial difficulties and I just can’t afford to pay for her too. Silly question as I’m nearly 50, but I feel silly going in my own. Do people ever go to museums and attractions on their own?

My god, do it. A day by myself doing what I like and not having to concern myself with other people is a luxury these days so I wouldn’t hesitate. Go and have a great time!

Bluenotgreen · 12/03/2025 20:21

Regularly. I also go on holidays abroad on my own sometimes. I am GREAT company 😎

Top tip. Take a book with you everywhere.

Have a brilliant time!

HowMuchShouldBePaid · 12/03/2025 20:21

Absolutely!!

I, personally, enjoy having company for days out etc bbbuuutttttt..... I'd much rather experience on my own than not at all.

For instance , I went , on my own to see some massive cooling towers being blown up, I would have loved some company but three years later I still have the memories , go for it

GucciBear · 12/03/2025 20:22

Do it" Highly recommended. I live alone and often take off for the day. Go on holidays too.

Jabberwok · 12/03/2025 20:22

Yep I'm married 56 but I've retired and my wife hasn't. So today I cycled into the city. Visited some historic places, walked around and admired the harbour, then came home. Often go to the seaside on my tod.

Take a book for when you eat/have coffee...all good

Bunniemalone · 12/03/2025 20:23

Go! Enjoy yourself. I used to (before DH) go to the cinema, holidays & restaurants on my own. Thoroughly enjoyed myself. No issues & not having to cater to anyone elses wants.

Of course! I regularly do day trips on my own, as well as theatre trips, meals out etc. There’s nothing to feel silly about, no one will even register that you’re on your own. It’s very liberating - you go when you want, where you want, and do exactly what you want. I highly recommend it. Once you’ve done the first day trip, there’ll be no stopping you.

There are loads of places and experiences to explore, seize the day and go out and enjoy yourself!

mamajong · 12/03/2025 20:24

I do and I love it, i can take my time and not worry about anyone's needs

lidolemon · 12/03/2025 20:25

A few years ago, I braved going to a show and city on my own for the afternoon.

I loved it. Now I go away for days at a time! All the time to do exactly what I want to do, take as much or as little time as I want, eat what I want etc.

The only downside is that now I find 'accompanied' holidays a little harder. You have nothing to lose in trying it just once.

Beketaten · 12/03/2025 20:26

Of course! I work in the museum sector. Adults visiting by themselves are a key audience for many venues. Enjoy taking the time to see it all at your own pace, lingering where you want, speeding through bits you're less interested in and stopping for tea and cake whenever you please.

PashaMinaMio · 12/03/2025 20:27

I’m older than you.
Ive just done two full days in London all by myself! First time ever on my own.
It was a huge step for me to travel 4 hours solo up from the sticks and then navigate London on my own! I’ve had a blast!
Ive met some great people to chat to, I’ve experienced some wonderful sights, I’ve eaten some great food and slept like a top. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Life’s too short.

Why would you not go somewhere on your own? I realise you must be anxious about it for some reason, but why? It's a perfectly normal thing to do. Completely unremarkable.

Createausername1970 · 12/03/2025 20:29

Yes!

Tumblingthrough · 12/03/2025 20:30

Yes. I do loads on my own.

I have friends I could ask but I love not revolving around others.

Seawolves · 12/03/2025 20:30

I'm a widow, if I didn't do things like day trips on my own then I would spend an awful lot of time staring at these four walls and missing out on doing what I want to do/see in life.

Do it.

MojoMoon · 12/03/2025 20:32

Yes, often.
I travelled solo at 19 for six months and while I met people at hostels etc, I also did lots of things on my own.

Now in middle age, I regularly pop into exhibitions on my own if one catches my eye. I do regular solo work travel in Europe so often try and squeeze in a museum or theatre visit in between meetings so I can feel like I've seen something of the city.

I had a solo long weekend in Athens last year and did all the museums and historic sites on my own.

persisted · 12/03/2025 20:32

Yes, often. Always have a great time and have final say on everything. Bliss.

BallerinaFall · 12/03/2025 20:39

I am single and I do loads of things on my own AND enjoy it.

A day at the spa
A day in a new city; exploring new places
Going to art exhibitions, cinema, theatre
Taking myself out to lunch
Trips to Europe
Trips Further afield.

If its something you want to do; why would anyones opinion stop you.

Blackcountryexile · 12/03/2025 20:41

Don't hesitate! I often take myself to museums and exhibitions and I love being able to suit myself. There are usually plenty of other people on their own.
I hope you go and have a lovely time.

AfricanGreen · 12/03/2025 20:41

I'm going to Berlin alone for a day trip soon.
You can't wait for companionship to live your life!! At over 50 we don't have forever to enjoy the world.

Pomegranatecarnage · 12/03/2025 20:43

Yes, I do and I love it! I usually go with friends or family but every now and then I fancy a day out doing what I want. Try it!

OverpricedCupcake · 12/03/2025 20:45

I do it all the time and love it.

NancyBellaDonna · 12/03/2025 20:47

I have got days out on my own. I love my solitude.

choccytime · 12/03/2025 20:47

Do it OP I went to the Bronte parsonage in Haworth on my own it was brilliant , I could have stayed there all day

DGPP · 12/03/2025 20:48
