Day trips alone?

I’m interested in going to see a historical town, including museums. It’s 2 hrs from mine, I have no one who would be interested in going? I’ve got a family, I’ve got a few friends but out of my friends I doubt any of them would want to go. One would go, but she has Financial difficulties and I just can’t afford to pay for her too. Silly question as I’m nearly 50, but I feel silly going in my own. Do people ever go to museums and attractions on their own?

All the time. I love a museum on my own. I put my earbuds in, listen to a book, and walk around.

I drove to Toronto on my own last year (from Cincinnati).

SnowFrogJelly · 13/03/2025 00:14

Of course.. it's great doing things on your own

LittleBigHead · 13/03/2025 04:42

Goodness me! Of course you should go. Whyever not?

doodahdayy · 13/03/2025 04:55

Go! Hope you have fun. My Nan is 88 and often has days out and holidays alone! She also has quite a few friends. Some people can't do anything alone which I find quite sad.

StarlightLady · 13/03/2025 06:31

You go girl!

l value my friendships and enjoy the company of others, but every so often l always enjoy my solo days out too. I can go out exactly where l want, stop for a coffee when l want, eat when l want, maybe have a glass of wine when l want perhaps chat to others and decide when l’m tired and it’s time to go home.

Thank you very much! I’m very self conscious yes, I’ve been to the cinema once on my own, had plenty of cafe type meals on my own, shopping on my own, but never day trips like the one I’m planning.

Of course, all the time. I mean I don’t often have time to, but definitely I love it. I go on holiday by myself. City breaks with museums and parks and meals out, theatre, I’ll go to the cinema on my own. I have friends and Dh and dc, but it’s nice to do things without having to consider anyone else.

Have a lovely time.

cestlavielife · 13/03/2025 14:26

Go! See if there is a local walking or bike tour or guided walk of the museum if you like the idea

Elsvieta · 13/03/2025 19:52

Of course they do. I do (DP isn't very into historical stuff, plus doesn't always have the same days off).

The fact that you've never noticed that loads of people do this shows that nobody will be noticing or thinking about you. Nothing at all to "feel silly" about. Enjoy! Don't forget to get a nice lunch and a decent glass of wine.

soupyspoon · 13/03/2025 19:55

I think I voted the wrong way OP

I think you are unreasonable to worry about this

But I think you meant 'unreasonable not to go'

So I think you should go on your own

Appalonia · 13/03/2025 19:59

I've been to loads of places on my own because I didn't know someone else who wanted to go, including Auschwitz and India! Life's too short to hang about waiting for others who don't want to do the same things as you. You won't regret going, but one day you might regret not going when you had the chance. Life is short OP. Go and enjoy yourself!😁

CarrieOnComplaining · 13/03/2025 20:03

It is completely normal to go on day trips, to museums, to cinemas, to theatres, to galleries on your own.

And all kinds of travel.

Just book your train ticket and have a great day.

Firebird83 · 13/03/2025 20:08

I love doing things on my own! So much more relaxing and you can do whatever you want, whenever you want.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 13/03/2025 20:09

Just do it. If you don't, you'll miss out. That's my thinking, and I live by it.

Semiramide · 13/03/2025 20:25

I love opera, ballet, concerts, theatre. Neither my DH nor most of my friends are as passionate, so I often go on my own. Once you've done it a few times it gets easy.

I often go to exhibitions twice. Once to just absorb the exhibits and take my time, another time to chat with a friend and explore different reactions.

I love going on holiday on my own and indulge my passions. Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Madrid........ St Ives...

And I don't eat in my hotel room either. Most of the time waiters are actually very attentive when I'm on my own. Especially in Italy, and even though I'm quite old.

HomeBodyClub · 13/03/2025 20:26

Of course they go alone. People do everything you can imagine on their own.

Duckswaddle · 13/03/2025 21:03

Absolutely do this all of the time. I like being by myself and not having to worry or accommodate anyone else 😀 have a great time.

MissRoseDurward · 13/03/2025 21:15

Even when I go away with friends, we might split up for a day or half a day because we want to do different things, then meet up again in the evening.

And I often go for days out and trips away on my own. Sometimes I just decide to go away for a few days at short notice and there isn't time to find out who is free and wants to come with me.

Of course. Why on earth not. Been doing that since I was a teenager and now in my 50s

GreatTheCat · 13/03/2025 21:32

I go one cruises alot, alone. I can spend 3 weeks alone with the odd chat - it's wonderful.

Sure do it!

Chocaholic1216 · 13/03/2025 21:35

Definitely go! One of my favourite things to do is the cinema or theatre and a lunch date on my own

Chickenkorma64 · 13/03/2025 22:05

I do this all the time. On my own I get to do exactly what I want, when I want. I work in a very busy environment day to day so enjoy getting away from people!
I always have a book/audiobook with me. I happily go into pubs/ cafes on my own, it’s great.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 13/03/2025 22:07

I quite often do this. DH and I have some shared interests but also some very different ones

I love a day out in London by myself, visiting art galleries and museums.

Game0fCrones · 13/03/2025 23:24

I'm your age and I do this all the time. Why not?

A free day to do as you please, at your own pace. Wonderful!

Ive said this before but it's worth repeating, the more women go out alone, the more people - and other women in particular - see it as normal and acceptable. Nobody blinks an eye at a middle-aged man out for a day on his own.

Be brave and do it.
