Day trips alone?

I’m interested in going to see a historical town, including museums. It’s 2 hrs from mine, I have no one who would be interested in going? I’ve got a family, I’ve got a few friends but out of my friends I doubt any of them would want to go. One would go, but she has Financial difficulties and I just can’t afford to pay for her too. Silly question as I’m nearly 50, but I feel silly going in my own. Do people ever go to museums and attractions on their own?

Definitely do it. Whilst it's great to have a shared experience and someone to talk to, there's also a lovely freedom to be had in visiting a place alone. You can completely please yourself and it's a very relaxing experience as a result.

Bjorkdidit · 12/03/2025 20:53

I'm another who does lots of things alone and prefers it. I just set my own timetable and get to switch off with no pressure to socialise.

I have a DP but he works a lot of weekends so I'm often free to please myself.

This year already I've been to York, Durham and Carlisle on solo days out and am going to Birmingham at the end of the month as I seem to have finally worked out how to get the train for a not too terrifying price and I'm firmly of the belief that just about every city has enough museums, scenic walks along rivers or canals and somewhere nice for lunch so worth at least one visit.

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2025 20:54

I used to go to gigs on my own, there’s always someone to talk to.

Daysgo · 12/03/2025 20:55

I often do, have a great day!

Biffbaff · 12/03/2025 20:56

I've travelled abroad alone for work and pleasure. The Chicago museum of art was one of my favourite solo adventures. Have fun, OP!

livelovelough24 · 12/03/2025 20:56

Absolutely, I do it all the time. My favourite is a road tripping and camping. Nothing better then my own company.

IkeaMeatballGravy · 12/03/2025 20:58

Go for it! I often take my DCs on coach trips and there are always lots of solo travelers.

ScribblingPixie · 12/03/2025 20:58

Of course they do! I live in London and go to museums and galleries on my own about 50 per cent of the time. Totally normal. And the experience is great because you don't get distracted and can really focus on what you're seeing. Please do it. You won't look back.

NattyTurtle59 · 12/03/2025 20:59

I'm 65 and have often gone on day trips alone.

honeyfox · 12/03/2025 20:59

Say it after me, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with doing something on your own.

I love it. I was single most of my twenties so I went to gigs, pubs, cinema and travelled briefly on my own. It's great and very empowering.

Danielle9891 · 12/03/2025 21:00

Do it. I travelled to Australia by myself and went out to eat, went to museums and stayed at hotels/hostels all by myself. I actually prefer it. It was the first time I left the UK and I needed a change. It will be great. You can take your time reading and viewing everything without someone talking to you.

noctilucentcloud · 12/03/2025 21:03

I'm not really a museums person but have been to lots of places and art galleries on my own. It's great, you get to see exactly what you want, when you want. No hanging around for other people or having to compromise! The only thing I miss sometimes is having someone to go wow that's amazing too. I find eating in the evenings a bit strange by myself (that's to do with me though, not that eating on your own is weird or that people judge you) so I either get a takeaway or take a book or magazine. I say go for it. You could always book on a guided tour of a house if you'd like. Some have amazing special behind the scenes tours.

I’m older than you.
Ive just done two full days in London all by myself! First time ever on my own.
It was a huge step for me to travel 4 hours solo up from the sticks and then navigate London on my own! I’ve had a blast!
Ive met some great people to chat to, I’ve experienced some wonderful sights, I’ve eaten some great food and slept like a top. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Life’s too short.

I’m about an hour from London. Watching Boris Johnson resigning and driving to Buckingham Palace etc I realised how close things were to each other. So in the summer I took myself down to London and walked from the Tower of London about 12 miles in total seeing so many sights. It was wonderful and I do it often when I get the chance.

I do and I love it, i can take my time and not worry about anyone's needs

Absolutely.

GentlemanJay · 12/03/2025 21:12

I've got lots of friends but love going to places on my own. I went to London the other year. I walked up Portobello Rd on a quiet day. I loved it. So much I walked back to the start and did it again. Just because I could. Then I hired a Boris Bike. If I'd had a friend with me I wouldn't have been able to do that. I love going on short two night trips away. By myself.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2025 21:12

In fact I've been to the theatre alone this afternoon and I'm off on holiday by myself soon.

Pebbles16 · 12/03/2025 21:13

I love going to places on my own. At my pace, can spend longer if I want and just walk out if it's not my thing.
I second taking a book, partly to read, partly to deflect unwanted attention - although that's rare: it's just a little friend in my handbag.

Threesacrow · 12/03/2025 21:14

I really enjoy days out by myself. No responsibility for anyone else's happiness, I can please myself. Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised!

abracadabra1980 · 12/03/2025 21:14

This!

GentlemanJay · 12/03/2025 21:14

LoveWine123 · 12/03/2025 20:20

My god, do it. A day by myself doing what I like and not having to concern myself with other people is a luxury these days so I wouldn’t hesitate. Go and have a great time!

The book idea. I suggested this to a female friend who said she would feel self conscious especially at meal times waiting for food.

She went to Edinburgh. Loved it and thanked me for telling her to just do it. She's been on a numerous trips alone now, including abroad.

EmpressaurusKitty · 12/03/2025 21:17

Of course, why not?

If you’re visiting somewhere with friends, do you notice people on their own & think they look silly? I doubt it.

JaceLancs · 12/03/2025 21:17

I should do this more often! I’m very comfortable with my own company and often go on holiday on my own - but at home on a weekend I tend to catch up on chores and caring for DM
Thank you for the nudge to carve out some me time

OnTheBoardwalk · 12/03/2025 21:19

Absolutely do it. I went with group of friends to see a gig in Amsterdam but spent the day before and after doing the museums on my own

even when I’ve been to museums with friends we’ve spent nearly all the time walking around on our own as we’ve moved at different paces

i had friend who always wanted to go to Paris with me but couldn’t afford it so we kept putting it off. The one thing I really wanted to see was Notre-Dame and looked what happened there

AdmittowearingCrocs · 12/03/2025 21:19

Do it. At 58 I traveled across the USA alone by train and plane. Loved it, no compromises, did whatever I wanted, and went wherever I wanted. Had a fantastic time and have since done other trips alone.

twilightcafe · 12/03/2025 21:20

Of course they do! And no one else there will care if you're there on your own.
