Thongs are HOrrible!!!

I bought a lingerie set, and didn't realise I picked up the bloody brazilian style knickers.
So I wore them today, and It was TORTURE.
I went to IKEA with my mum and she couldn't get enough of the place, I wanted to scream all afternoon.
How can some people do it?

Worn thongs since I was in my teens, now in my 40's never had thrush and I don't have skid marks.

I did own a couple of "big pants" period knickers to protect my jeans from leakage on my heavy day but now I've switched to period thongs which are so much more comfortable

StarlightLady · 12/03/2025 11:59

I confess to be a tad perplexed by some of the comments here. The choice of knickers available is wide ranging. Nobody is making anybody wear thongs who opt not to. Yet some of the posts are reacting as if “you must wear thongs” legislation has recently become law 😳.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 12/03/2025 12:04

I don’t wear them much any more. I’m not overly against them, I just prefer my harvest festivals nowadays - all is safely gathered in.

Faecal bacteria do not cause thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection

I’m not aware of any reason why bacteria would prefer to travel along a thong to your vagina rather than your own skin

In 30 years of practising medicine I have never encountered anyone who suffered from recurrent vaginal infections due to habitual thong wearing

Why are we advised to wipe from front to back then (by GPs, amongst others)?

To prevent urinary tract infections.

Likewise I have never encountered someone suffering recurrent UTIs due to habitual thong wearing.

Jury’s still out on that it seems?

Thrush and BV tend to happen when the bacterial flora of the vagina is out of balance - plus GPs tend to advise keeping the area especially clean if you suffer from vulvovagunitis in case faecal bacteria is irritating the skin. It’s also possible to get threadworms in the vagina, too. I cannot see how wearing a thong is great for any of those things!

Boxers, briefs and bacterial vaginosis: how your underwear can affect your health

‘Make sure you always wear clean pants’ isn’t just something your mum used to say – keeping your underwear scrupulously clean could stop you from getting ill

Brazilian cut has been impossible since my caesarean, it feels like reopening the scar. I prefer big black pants. I'm ok with a thong when it cuts high at the front (mixed bag), but realistically only ever bother if I feel like giving DH variety.

This one might be correlation as they recently proved BV is an STD.

Pressure from whom? I have not felt pressure to wear material up my crack no matter what age

I definitely felt peer pressure from friends as a teen to avoid a VPL at all costs, and girls who committed that crime were mocked mercilessly.

TabbyM · 12/03/2025 12:27

I wore them briefly when I met DH but these days with peri I am too concerned that massive clots are scaping so stick to M&S big period pants - they do do thong ones but this would be asking for disaster imho ;)

BV can be triggered by sexual activity but isn’t always - it can be related to other problems with vaginal imbalance too, such as vaginal atrophy because of hormonal factors.

If you click through to the study referenced in that article it actually states :

CONCLUSION:
We found that thong use is not associated with UTI, BV, or VY

It’s very fashion-dependent. When I grew up in the 80s and 90s nobody had heard of or gave a damn about VPL - but then the fashion at the time wasn’t for tight body-skimming clothing, and the fashion in underwear was more for boyshorts and bikini briefs, even in summer dresses. G-strings/thongs were considered tacky, and definitely not mainstream!

A lot of the hype around them started in the late 90s - Sex and the City and Monica Lewinsky flashing her thong straps at Bill Clinton in the Starr Report! (Still tacky though.)

Research published last week: https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa2405404.

Vaginal atrophy is not BV. It may make wearing thongs more problematic, but it is a different thing. Like how low iron or low B12 can each make you tired, but they aren't the same thing.

I didn’t remotely say vaginal atrophy was the same as BV. However, it can trigger BV. I had this when I was extended breastfeeding for two years, and it cleared as soon as I started using topical oestrogen.

What kinda stuff would be said beyond a simple "your pants are showing"?

You may have been more susceptible to infection, but the bacteria still came from somewhere!

Try this link, or search NEJM for bacterial vaginosis: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2405404

I can’t speak for how things are at senior schools now, but certainly when I was there in the late 90s it was accepted that you could be lightly to severely bullied for any way that you went against the ‘norm’. The mean girls at my school certainly had a thing about pointing out VPLs. Also there was a general message that it was important to wear stuff that boys might find sexy. I very much hope teenage girls today are facing less of this sh*t, but it was the reality when I was that age.

TheDenimGuide · 15/03/2025 21:27

As someone who exclusively wears thongs when I wear underwear you get used to it. It can be uncomfortable at the start feeling it ride up your crack but now I don’t even notice it and would never consider any other underwear

Blondebrownorred · 15/03/2025 21:44

After reading this thread, I decided to do a test and I wore full knickers a couple of days ago and they just kept going up my bum. I spent the whole day pulling out all the fabric from my bum crack! Safe to say I'll be sticking with my thongs.

pleasedonotfeedme · 16/03/2025 13:10

You really bought and wore some “full knickers” for a day just because of a mumsnet thread? Really?!

I already had them from years ago. I used to use them on my period occasionally.
