I bought a lingerie set, and didn't realise I picked up the bloody brazilian style knickers.
So I wore them today, and It was TORTURE.
I went to IKEA with my mum and she couldn't get enough of the place, I wanted to scream all afternoon.
How can some people do it?

But isn’t it uncomfortable to have some material between your buttock cheeks where one’s skin is thinner and more sensitive?

I don't find them uncomfortable personally. I'm not keen on Brazilian knickers but thongs are fine.

Different people find different things comfortable.

Walked behind a woman yesterday who wore a thomg, both her arse cheeks were wobbling, definitely not a good look

Bloody hell.

bozzabollix · 11/03/2025 17:16

My daughter has named them constant wedgie pants and she’s bang on the money. Just why would you do it?

It's not when you are young. They don't sit all the way between your cheeks, they just sort of rest in the dip slightly. When you are 20! So they are comfortable then.. I used to find the plain cotton ones the most comfortable style of underwear!
I suppose they might still be comfortable for absolute gym bunnies who are very slender at any age.
But for most women whove had kids and entered middle age.. let's be honest we've got too much wobble going on for a thong to just rest placidly. So they become annoying and uncomfortable

I had this discussion with a friend who swears by thongs. I can't stand them. She told me I was wearing the wrong size or the wrong fabric. I tried sizing up and softer fabric but I always end up pulling them out of my arse continually and feeling as though there's something trying to creep up my bottom.

Thongs and I are not to be, I have decided. Each to their own.

DurbevillesGirl2 · 11/03/2025 17:23

I can’t wear anything but a thong, even when I’m on my period. Can’t stand the feel of all that material of normal knickers

pleasedonotfeedme · 11/03/2025 17:25

Tried them in my 20s when if was impossible to find a nice lingerie set without thong pants, because it was the Thing to “avoid VPL” (eg. made up to sell to women that it was super sexy and god forbid anyone see the line of a normal pant and so on).

But OMFG no. Uncomfortable, unhygienic and just plain nasty. You would never convince the average man to wear something so horrible — thin plastic polyester or nylon “fabric” stuck up in his arse cheeks rubbing faecal bacteria all over the place on sensitive skin. Yet somehow we women all got convinced [i.e. marketed to] that this was the dernier cri in underwear for us.

They don’t even look sexy, just grim! Whenever I see one, all I can think of is all that faecal bacteria working its way down the fabric to my vagina, ready to give me a nasty case of thrush. It’s a no from me!

Because shockingly people like different things. I don't find them uncomfortable so I choose to wear them, others may find them uncomfortable so probably shouldn't.

Why do people act so confused about people having different preferences?

Masmavi · 11/03/2025 17:28

Hate big pants, elastic pulling on your bum. Brazilians aren't thongs anyway, they have more coverage. Each to their own!

Masmavi · 11/03/2025 17:29

This is so odd. Some people like them. Doesn't mean they're victims of the patriarchy 🤣

Masmavi · 11/03/2025 17:30

G Strings and thongs are different. G strings are the uncomfortable floss things that do feel like cheese wire, things are a bit wider and much more comfortable.

Basically a knicker that has a thin strip of material at the back whether it be pencil wide or 2 fingers wide are all called thongs in my part of the world.

Regardless of whatever you call these knickers, they're still bloody uncomfortable!

Hi yes I'm back 🙋‍♀️

I only wear thongs and g strings. I can't wear anything else. I hate loads of material like with big knickers. I'm in my 40s and have worn thongs eve since I was a teen.

Masmavi · 11/03/2025 17:29

It’s a very well known old school feminist point that women’s clothes, from corsets to thongs, are designed around looking a certain way for men rather than being comfortable. I’m not aware that this is a particularly controversial point, either. Even little girls’ clothes are skimpier, tighter and made with cheaper fabrics than boys’ clothes.

I’m old enough to remember when manufacturers decided to sell us thongs as a mainstream thing (as opposed to niche “sexy” porn-style lingerie which they were in the 80s and early 90s). The reason given for marketing them, when they became mainstream, was always “sexiness” and “avoiding VPL”, (eg. not “spoiling” the line of how tight clothes look). The whole look was also about letting the thong string show over your waistband at the time, so men knew you were wearing one! It was all about what men could (thong string) or couldn’t (line of normal knicker) see!

Of course convincing women to wear uncomfortable underwear solely in order to be sexy to men is about the patriarchy. Why would you think it wasn’t? Do you think that somehow, right around 1997, polyester fabric technology reached some kind of crucial tipping point that women were suddenly all clamouring to wear plastic string up the arse?

I love a wobbly bum. It’s hot. Also love a thong. I work out most days and don’t like big pants with leggings. Horses for courses.

Amaizintacos · 11/03/2025 17:44

Don't know if they are thongs or G-strings based on the above, but I had always hated them, then took a chance on the back of a good review I read and they are so comfortable, went from never-thongs to using every day, didn't realise till then depended on finding brand that suited

NoTouch · 11/03/2025 17:56

Wore them when I was a teenager and I cared immensely about VPL.

VPL is now the least of my worries and comfort wins every time 🤣

ballettap · 11/03/2025 18:11

I remember wearing white pants under white trousers when I was younger and getting shouted at by some young guys that I was supposed to be wearing a thong! It did make me paranoid for a bit and I did wear them. didn't find them uncomfortable (maybe sometimes the lacy ones), but then I found the silky no-vpl almost full coverage ones and I've never gone back.

Not because I care what anyone thinks of my vpl these days, but they are so blinking comfortable and actually make me feel sexier because of how smooth they are to touch, rather than having my bum out.

Blueuggboots · 11/03/2025 18:14

Brazilian pants are neither one nor the other - they must be shiny because they have too much material to be a comfortable thong...if you're going to wear thongs, get the ones with a narrow back...

RhubarbCrumbs · 11/03/2025 18:15

They’re the only type of underwear I wear! Find them much more comfortable than pants.

Westpoint · 11/03/2025 18:20

SamanthaJonesWasRight · 11/03/2025 16:49

A brazillian cut and a thong is not the same creature. I can cope with the former but not the latter, at all, despite wearing them daily in the 90s. Maybe they're a young person's game.

They definitely ARE a young persons game. I'm speaking only for myself of course (48 going on 49) but any hint of a middle aged spread and those suckers are going to slip beneath your tummy pouch leaving the gusset and thong bit sagging down a few inches below your floof...............unless you want to hoick them up around your ribs and floss your perineum!

Maybe it's me though, my same age friends can't say enough about the hanky panky one size ones 😬

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 11/03/2025 18:40

I bought the wrong knickers in M&S at the weekend, normally get their bikini style. Got the high waist high leg, oh my god
So comfortable.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/03/2025 18:42

I've never worn a thong and I never will. So unhygienic.
