Don't worry, it's not Balonz.

One of our friends is having a little girl and she's asked for suggestions from our group. She wants one name from every member.

She would like something a little unusual but nothing that's going to make problems for her child in the future.

I was watching YouTube (okay, I was trawling it for cat videos) and I came across this channel called Esselle and Eric. This chatty cat is really adorable but it's the woman's name that really struck me. Esselle. I've never come across the name before and I think it's a lovely name but I'm not sure if I'm being swayed by the fact she's sounds like a really nice person.

I was thinking of putting the name forward as my suggestion.

I know it's not a massively big deal in the grand scheme of things but I don't want the group laughing at me or thinking I'm weird.

Can I ask what you think.

Esselle is beautiful! I’ve always loved Estelle so I’m not surprised I like this name so much. Go for it!

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 11/03/2025 13:53

She could shorten it to SL when she's older...
No, I'm afraid I don't like it, sorry OP

Anonym00se · 11/03/2025 13:54

It sounds like a contraceptive pill, sorry.

MyLordWizardKing · 11/03/2025 13:54

It's nice, but I prefer Estelle, and I think it would often get misspelled/misheard as that.

Onlyvisiting · 11/03/2025 13:54

Sorry- no.
It is so uncommon that Google was no help to me in trying to find out its meaning or how to pronounce it.
Tbh I would just assume you'd either made it up or couldn't spell Estelle. (Which could be an option?)

However- I hate the idea of making people offer names, so I'd either decline to take part or just pick a random name of the top 20 and forget about it.

QueenOfWeeds · 11/03/2025 13:55

It is pretty, but I think you risk people hearing “Ethel” and assuming you have a speech impediment, to be honest. And I say that as someone with a speech impediment!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/03/2025 13:55

People would mistake it for 'Estelle' constantly. And it sounds like the letters 'S' 'L', which is a bit odd. I'm not a fan, sorry!

JustFrustrated · 11/03/2025 13:56

I actually love it...

ItGhoul · 11/03/2025 13:59

It's a nice-sounding name, but I think anyone called Esselle would spend their entire life saying 'No, jot Estelle - Esselle, with two Ss. No, not Esstelle either. No T, two Ss' etc etc.

Needanewnameidea · 11/03/2025 13:59

I like Estelle, but I agree with the poster who said Esselle sounds like a contraceptive pill brand.

UpTheLaganInABubble1 · 11/03/2025 14:00

I am not keen (sorry). There are so many -elle names and El- names around now that the unusual ones just merge into one for me.

Wholeheartedly agree!

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 11/03/2025 14:24

Just reminds me of ellesse. Or like you shortened Sarah Louise to SL

Elsie, Esme, Elouise, Ellis, Erin, quite like those

Survivingnotthriving24 · 11/03/2025 14:40

Agree, Estelle is pretty but Esselle will spend a lifetime explaining her name. No fun for anyone!

sprigatito · 11/03/2025 14:41

Sounds like a scented sanitary towel

KrisAkabusi · 11/03/2025 14:47

It sounds like somebody saying two letters. I suspect that that's where the youtube name came from. It's a no from me.

Floppyflippers · 11/03/2025 14:49

I feel a bit unkind now. I hope any woman whose name it is doesn't come across this post. I thought it was a nice name but I'd better carry on thinking or keep my suggestions to myself.

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

My first thought was this sports company
https://www.mandmdirect.com/01/details/EZ30620?istCompanyId=9f9ff470-bcac-401b-814f-8f12edbd3b8b&istFeedId=d66f05e8-0145-4833-93eb-995bd3c15e0b&istItemId=qpimmmxta&istBid=t&&campaignid=21448490360&gadsource=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvrBhB5EiwAd5YbXhG9nS1UgO1mo4HziLn9c4epfmyjDdUSOjYU7cSjoSawfjEsBBjbshoCMPUQAvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
It's too close, and also, I think it sounds like a mispronounciation of Estelle. Sounds a bit weak, whereas the firm 't' makes Estelle or Estella sound strong and definite. Also, she'd be forever spelling it out and saying, 'no 't', no!' Furthermore, esselle means 'forsaken' in French, which is not great, whereas Estelle / Estella means 'star' in Latin ... Much more preferable!
My personal fave girls' name is Genevieve which also lends itself to some pretty shortenings.
Another name I love, which doesn't seem to be too common, is Sylvie which means 'wood' or 'forest' (derived from the Latin Silva). Especially nice if she likes nature names.
Also, Camille (pronounced the French way 'Cammy' is pretty,) as is Camilla.

loropianalover · 11/03/2025 14:51

I agree with pp it looks like you’ve written Ellesse incorrectly! Sorry OP, I don’t like it or the way it looks written down.

Estelle and Elle are both lovely names.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/03/2025 14:52

Esselle sounds like a product rather than a name. Estelle or Estella are better.

GucciBear · 11/03/2025 14:54

No. Sounds like Estelle with a glottal stop. Estelle is very pretty.

KrisAkabusi · 11/03/2025 14:56

I hope any woman whose name it is doesn't come across this post.

They won't, because there are no women with this name. It's not a name , it's a made up youtube handle.

Biffbaff · 11/03/2025 14:59

It's a naff name. No. Maybe just suggest Elle.

Moonnstars · 11/03/2025 15:00

Estelle or Estella yes, Esselle no.

tuvamoodyson · 11/03/2025 15:00

It’s a no from me.
