Don't worry, it's not Balonz.

One of our friends is having a little girl and she's asked for suggestions from our group. She wants one name from every member.

She would like something a little unusual but nothing that's going to make problems for her child in the future.

I was watching YouTube (okay, I was trawling it for cat videos) and I came across this channel called Esselle and Eric. This chatty cat is really adorable but it's the woman's name that really struck me. Esselle. I've never come across the name before and I think it's a lovely name but I'm not sure if I'm being swayed by the fact she's sounds like a really nice person.

I was thinking of putting the name forward as my suggestion.

I know it's not a massively big deal in the grand scheme of things but I don't want the group laughing at me or thinking I'm weird.

Can I ask what you think.

No, but Estelle is nice.

It is pretty, but I think you risk people hearing “Ethel” and assuming you have a speech impediment, to be honest. And I say that as someone with a speech impediment!

Yes or i think it will end up being called Esil.

Zippidydoodah · 11/03/2025 15:04

Estelle is nice enough. Esselle sounds made up? I would also think of it as SL.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/03/2025 15:04

too Frilly for me

Esselle sounds like a product rather than a name. Estelle or Estella are better.

Estella is too similar to Estrella (beer).

Floppyflippers · 11/03/2025 15:14

Seems probable it's a made up YouTube handle as previously suggested so I will go with something else.

Like I said, maybe I was just being swayed slightly by the nice personality of this cat video maker.

Once again, thanks for steering me in a different direction.

No 😳

KimberleyClark · 11/03/2025 15:18

I’m afraid I don’t like it. Sounds like a product for the alleviation of menopause symptoms.

DazedAndConfused321 · 11/03/2025 15:19

I love the name Estelle
But Eselle sounds like an ointment, shampoo or medication

TheGoogleMum · 11/03/2025 15:25

How about Elise?

Conniebygaslight · 11/03/2025 15:31

I hear 'A Cell' so no from me too...sorry

I feel a bit unkind now. I hope any woman whose name it is doesn't come across this post. I thought it was a nice name but I'd better carry on thinking or keep my suggestions to myself.

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

No fear of that

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2025 15:43

She'll spend her entire life having to spell it out. And it sounds like a fanny deodorant.

Mylittlebobble · 11/03/2025 15:47

In that vein, how about Estee? As is Estee Lauder. Think its pretty, not too out there, and wouldn't be too many in the class.

Astrak · 11/03/2025 15:47

No. For all the good reasons mentioned above.

Nameychangington · 11/03/2025 15:56

I met a girl who I thought was called this when I was a kid - turns out it was SL, short for Sarah Louise. Probably the same with the person you saw, it's a nickname based on her initials not an actual name.

itsgettingweird · 11/03/2025 15:58

I like Essie but as a nn of Estelle.

So I'm another with suggesting Estelle instead

outerspacepotato · 11/03/2025 16:00

SL.

Say less.

No.

ShodAndShadySenators · 11/03/2025 16:01

You could suggest Estelle though, lots of people seem to like that and it's fairly unusual these days? It's a pretty name

FoolishHips · 11/03/2025 16:02

Not sure about the name but that's a great way to advertise the YouTube channel.

bettydavieseyes · 11/03/2025 16:05

No it's awful sorry.

Estelle is nice.
Esther
Elise
Eloise

I like Sylvia

WatchingTheClowns · 11/03/2025 16:07

NO. Estelle would be better

SquashedSquid · 11/03/2025 16:23

My first thought was that it sounds like an oral contraceptive pill.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 11/03/2025 16:31

sprigatito · 11/03/2025 14:41

Sounds like a scented sanitary towel

I completely agree with this. It's the first thing that popped into my mind. I can even see the writing on the packet, a bit like Cushelle.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2025 16:34

Esselle is really S L, though.

I think it sounds like a shampoo or the name of a nail salon, or as a pp said, an oral contraceptive.

Estelle is much, much nicer.
