Can’t tell anyone in real life

I’m actually shaking a bit writing this because I’m so scared of the comments to come but I need to tell someone because I can’t tell anyone in real life.
for the last 10 years I’ve been addicted to opioids, taking uncountable amounts every day & spending upto £1k a month on tablets from the black market.
im FINALLY clean; did it all by myself by weaning off slowly and im so proud of myself. None of my friends and family know and from the outside looking in I don’t think you would have guessed.
I just feel so amazing, I have so much more energy, I’m not in as much pain anymore and life just feels more colourful as cliche as that sounds. I’m just so proud of myself that I beat this horrible addiction that’s had such a hold on me for a decade. I’m so scared I’ll relapse but I’m determined. Thanks for reading if you got this far!!

Well done you should be very proud x

PluckedOutOfThinAir · 11/03/2025 20:49

Op that's amazing and you should be proud of yourself. I imagine that beating an opioid addiction is probably one of the hardest things to do and now that you have done this you can do anything. Massive congratulations and wishing you all the best for a fantastic future!!

PeachBlossom1234 · 11/03/2025 21:22

Honest OP you’ve done amazing! Well done.

It’s so easy to get addicted and they aren’t properly monitored so don’t blame yourself and I can tell you this is a much bigger problem than you’d expect! My 77 year old dad is completely addicted to co-codamol and has been for the last 10 years, he recently had a stroke and he went cold turkey while he was in hospital which was awful, I mentioned it to a colleague who’s in her 60s only for her to admit she is the same and takes one tablet every night before bed but can’t quite stop completely. You’ve done so well, be proud of yourself!

ClairDeLaLune · 12/03/2025 01:04

Awesome OP, very well done you! Save this thread, and if you ever think you’re going to relapse reread it and remember how good you felt, and how we all think you’re amazing. Now you’ve got all that extra money, you can enjoy yourself with it! (Or put it in your pension, whatever!) 👏👏🙌

Again, thank you so so much for all of the encouraging messages everyone. You’ll never know how much they mean to be. It’s nice to have people cheering me on! I’m going to my first NA meeting on Friday and I’m working up the courage to tell my best friend and get it all out in the open!

Well done!!!!!!
Take it in baby steps and tell your friend.
I thought mine would be shocked when I told her but she wasn’t.
It is a lot, lot more common than you can imagine.
Welcome to living a free life - it’s bloody brilliant!

This is lovely post OP! Good for you! That's fantastic and money saving is brilliant because you can do more things now. I have had a problem with alcohol for the past couple of years (started in lockdown really but got progressively worse). I have been doing really well since November and I'd say now I'm in recovery. Im also noticing i have more money! Taking the kids to butlins soon and have done some home improvements. Im losing weight too! Go us! 😃

Firstly, love your MN name.
Secondly, well done Betty. Keep going with your sobriety it’s the best thing you could ever do for yourself and your family.
Go and have a blast in Butlins. You deserve it.

Dittyditty · 12/03/2025 19:18

Last year I was in much the same place. It was beyond hard but I got through it.
Having been there and knowing how hard it was to go through , I have to give you a massive Well done.Be very proud of yourself.

MrsMillyFluff · 12/03/2025 19:20

Well done you! As someone who was hooked on prescription valium for 20 odd years I know what it's like to be an addict and how positive you must feel now. Big hugs to you ❤️🤗💐

toxic44 · 12/03/2025 19:20

You truly are amazing! And so strong to have done this incredible thing on your own. We are all proud of you and in awe of your achievement. Huge respect!

madaboutpurple · 12/03/2025 19:20

Fantastic, well done indeed.

Vynalbob · 12/03/2025 19:46

I think you should be proud. The only suggestion I'd have is to always mention to doctors that you can't have x,y,z as when time goes by it gets lost from the summary parts of your record (obs sometimes not always).
Good luck 👍

TreesAtSea · 12/03/2025 19:56

I haven't RTFT but have read all your posts, OP, and just want to add my "Congratulations!" to all the others.
You deserve to be incredibly proud of yourself.
I know how hard it is to beat an addiction.

NoisyLemonDog · 12/03/2025 20:00

Well done! Such a tough thing to do but you did it. You should be really proud of yourself 💪

OrangeAndFizz · 12/03/2025 20:32

That's a great achievement. It will be hard to keep up so as has already been advised, do seek support. You will be fine from now on!

AlleycatMarie · 12/03/2025 20:51

What an amazing achievement OP! I do hope you can find some support going forward and maybe somone to talk to in real life if you need it (a group of you don’t want to tell friends?).

You should be so proud of yourself and Inam sending you so much love and best wishes for your future x
